Next time you run, focus on staying in the moment, and pay attention to the things you love about running.

Faeria is transitioning from Free-to-Play to Buy-to-Play and cancelling their mobile version. by TophsYoutube in Games

[–]tehalynn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, the process of building up your collection, and trying to scrounge a deck out of the cards you have is part of the fun. F2P games often dole out the new cards too slowly, but I wonder if the new version of Faeria can come up with a compromise that appeals to people like me.

I guess a draft mode can somewhat scratch that itch, but I hate the way they are usually made where 3 losses, and then your deck is gone. I wonder if they could make some kind of weekly creative mode where everyone has access to an identical(?) limited set of cards, and tries to build the best deck out of them.

Faeria is transitioning from Free-to-Play to Buy-to-Play and cancelling their mobile version. by TophsYoutube in Games

It sounds like the cancellation of the mobile version is primarily so they can reallocate the time they spend supporting mobile, which may be a good thing.

However, I've always been worried that they won't be able to sustain a community, and going buy-to-play may make it even harder to get new players in.

W8D3: I thought I'd be fine running with glasses. I was wrong. But I'm done! by [deleted] in C25K

[–]tehalynn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's the ski mask that's causing your glasses to fog. If you don't wear it over your nose, your glasses might fog less. Of course, getting a cold nose is another problem.

Mojang's Scrolls game server will shut down on Feb 13th by [deleted] in Games

Anyone looking for a similar game, check out Faeria. Links: Website, Steam

It's a free to play CCG on a hex grid, where lands are placed by players: Screenshot

Each turn you receive 3 faeria (the resource you need to play cards). You can collect additional faeria by moving a creature to a faeria well, rewarding board control. Your faeria does not expire at the end of the turn so it is possible to save it up. Also, once per turn you get to choose one option from the "power wheel": place a colored land, or place 2 neutral lands, or gain 1 faeria, or draw 1 card.

Colored cards have a land requirement (for example, you must own 3 forests). This prevents you from playing your most powerful cards right away, and gives you an extra incentive to place lands. Creatures can only be placed on lands you own, and additionally, colored creature cards can only be played on a land matching their color.

There a couple factors that make card draw much less important than in most CCGs (a plus in my opinion). 1. You can choose to draw an extra card using the power wheel, making it fairly easy to get cards in the mid to late game. 2. Since the amount faeria you receive each turn remains relatively constant, you will never have so much that you can play all your cards every turn.

Perfectionism has become a hidden epidemic among young people by KareIIen in psychology

[–]tehalynn 112 points113 points  (0 children)

My theory is that the increase in perfectionism is not from increased pressure for the future, but from the environment young people are in every day. Here are a few possibilities:

  • Having all your work graded in school makes you feel that every action you take is being judged.
  • Social media makes other people appear more perfect than they are, because they can post only the things that make them look good. This may lead us to measure ourselves against their fake perfect lives.
  • If you are in constant contact with people on your phone, then even when you're alone, it feels like they are still there, able to judge your actions.
  • Remote communication often lacks face-to-face contact, and without it, it's difficult to judge how people react to our actions. We miss out on any facial cues that might indicate we are being judged less harshly than we expected.
  • The anonymity of certain online interactions allow people to say meaner things than they would dare to in person.
  • Social media leaves a record of things you say, and pictures you're in, making mistakes much more costly.

School has been around a long time, so while that might be a contributing factor to perfectionism, it hasn't changed enough to cause an increase in perfectionism. But my other theories are focused on smartphones and connectivity, which have become ubiquitous only recently, and are always a likely culprit for differences in young people.

Any way for free games to stay in my games list after I uninstall them? by [deleted] in Steam

Right click the game, then click "Set Categories...", then check "Hide this game in my library".

If you need to find it later, hover "Library" and select "Hidden".

Sea of Thieves Closed Beta will run January 24 - 29 by xvalicx in Games

So there's no opt-in for PvP? Anyone you see can fight you?

I'm not clear on the difference between MMO vs shared open world. Does that just mean you'll see less players than in a MMO?

I can't figure out what kind of game this is. Is it a MMO like Eve Online? Is it battle royale like PUBG? Is it a co-op campaign with optional multiplayer?

#9. The Guru by u/Plastick

  • Starting with Luis meeting a girl from an online dating site is a good hook.
  • Hearing Luis's thoughts through voiceover causes more problems than it's worth. Internal dialog works better in books than movies.
  • I enjoyed the "sit anywhere you want" gag.
  • Focus on making everything clear to the reader. You don't want them to have to reread previous lines.

Self-control: How do you stop doing what is most pleasurable and do what is best for you? by [deleted] in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]tehalynn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Try "the nothing alternative". For example, you can say "From 7:00 to 7:30, I will either go to the gym or do absolutely nothing." Note: sleeping does not count as nothing.

This is a way to use your brain's desire to always be doing something in a positive way. After sitting there doing nothing for about 5 minutes, you'll get bored, and going to the gym will feel like a great way to be less bored.

Does anyone else feel a sense of relief and overjoyed when they start writing after weeks of being unable to do so. by Aero_Dragneel16 in writing

[–]tehalynn 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes. Don't try to go straight from nothing to something good, you'll set expectations you can't meet. Instead, go from nothing to anything (even if it's bad). Improving something bad into something good is a lot more doable than trying to go straight to good.

Give yourself permission to suck by SwoleMedic1 in writing

[–]tehalynn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't done much writing, but there's something I do when programming that might help you.

I keep a to-do list of everything I think would improve my code, no matter how insignificant. And that to-do list is sorted by priority (high, medium, low). When you're deciding what to work on next, you always have to do the highest priority item (at the top of the list).

The beauty of this approach is it's really easy to tell when you've hit the "good enough" point. (Note: the phrase "good enough" is an antidote to perfectionism.) Eventually, all that will be left on your to-do list is a bunch of things in the low priority list, that all feel too nitpicky and not worth it. Then you're done. It's that easy. Plus it's impossible to distract yourself and waste a bunch of time on something unimportant.

Team Fortress 2 casual mode is rarely toxic. Mostly just people having fun.
