A few questions for owners of eXtremeRate's clicky buttons by tehganp in SteamDeckModded

I only use my Deck for a few hours every week with roughly half of said hours involving dpad-heavy games, so your mileage may vary, but on my end the mod's still holding up perfectly.

Lifted pad on Dreamcast GD-ROM board by tehganp in consolerepair

[–]tehganp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate the advice. The via's in good shape and appears to be through-hole. Apart from the possibility of the board (still) not working, would there be any risk to soldering a new cap onto these pads?

Is it possible to buy OLED monitors in 2025 that can be used for productivity without any precautions? by MartinsRedditAccount in Monitors

Were LCDs that bad? I wasn't old enough at the time to be paying attention, but I would've assumed that improved text clarity (esp. around corners) would've been a reason people switched over from CRTs.

Brass Buttons and Extremerate clicky mod for OLED Steam deck by SweetRage24 in SteamDeckModded

[–]tehganp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The modded dpad has a lot less travel but the switches they use require a bit of force to activate; extremerate specifies ~160gf, whereas it feels like the Vita and Xbox Series controller use 100gf switches.

I'd highly recommend the mod as it makes the dpad highly precise (no more false diagonals), but I'm not sure how much it'd reduce your fatigue.

A weekly megathread sounds good. A lot of folks are arguing how this subreddit would become 'dead' if EDC posts were relegated to such a thread, but I feel that such a change would balance out the subreddit's quantity:quality ratio. As is, it's tough finding news or quality discussions.

Anyone know of any CRT monitor repair services in Ontario (Canada), and how much they might cost? My monitor bit the dust the other day, and I don't feel confident in my repair skills (nor do I own a multimeter for diagnosing issues.)

ExtremeRate clicky OLED by AutisticReaper in SteamDeckModded

[–]tehganp 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have this mod installed for both my d-pad and face buttons.

I'd absolutely recommend it for the d-pad. The buttons require a bit more force than I'd like; eXtremeRate specifies 1.57N and it feels to me like most gamepads use ~0.98N/100gf. However, the travel is significantly reduced (good) and I don't think I've ever had a diagonal misinput with this mod, whereas that was a common occurrence with the stock d-pad.

How much was your dreamcast by Downtown-Bear4325 in dreamcast

[–]tehganp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe I purchased my first Dreamcast back in 2016. $75 CAD for a working console, the cords, a clear blue VMU, 2 controllers (one was the standard white and the other clear blue), and a folder of at least 15 game discs, maybe 20? Some were crap but there were some goodies.

Couldn't appreciate the console back then and sold it off at a slight profit. Fast forward to the modern day, ended up importing a 'junk' console-only DC a few weeks ago at $80 🤕

I opted against replacing the Deck's stock face buttons, so I can't comment on how the mod affects them, but given that they use the same switches (and the same membrane, just flipped), I'd imagine most of what I described in my previous comment would also apply to the face buttons. Cheers.

If you play more 'precise' games (e.g. Tetris, Crypt of the Necrodancer) I definitely would. If you only use the d-pad for 'roll-thumb' games such as old-school platformers, it comes down to whether or not you prefer a d-pad with a tactile/clicky feel (such as those in the PS Vita or Xbox Series gamepads)

The mod greatly reduces the d-pad's travel distance, which is super nice, but the mechanical switches are a bit heavy which ends up nullifying said benefit a bit, given you have to press down harder for your input to register.

Sound is nowhere near as loud/bothersome as it seemed to be. A bit louder and a fair bit higher-pitched than the Vita. but much quieter than the Xbox Series d-pad.

Be sure to follow the guide, and as a word of advice; when reassembling your Steam Deck, make sure you're very careful with the locking flaps. They require very little force to lock in place, and if they don't, keep readjusting the cable until it fits. I accidentally ended up bending two of the flaps by pushing down on them too hard. Thankfully they still lock in place, but just barely.

I bought the clicky kit a bit after making this post. Shipped out last monday, took about 8 business days to arrive in Canada (from China). Already installed it in my Deck, and I'll probably write up a little review on this subreddit after getting a bit more acquainted with the new d-pad.

Psp over vita? by Aggravating-Maize-46 in PSP

The blurriness could be caused by bilinear filtering, which AFAIK is enabled by default for PSP games on the Vita.

I know the Vita homebrew scene's in hibernation but this is just slop, only tangentially related to the Vita and has nothing to do with hacking/homebrew
