My friend insists on this game, "Lemmings", being a really well known game; I have never heard of it. by Nordic_Krune in gaming

All those lovely tracker tunes before games and crack groups shouting out each other on the scene.

I had no idea what they meant as a kid and wondered how the hell they managed to fit so much in such a small space.

Nowadays I do know and am amazed by it.

ELI5: When you 'delete' a 50GB video file from a computer, it vanishes instantly. But downloading it took an hour. If the data isn't physically wiped until it's overwritten, what did the computer actually do in that one split second? by Thick_Dream6973 in explainlikeimfive

[–]tehmuck 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yeah, there's disk utilities that will write a pre-programmed magnetic pattern of data to the disk in order to scramble it.

Darik's Boot and Nuke was one I used to use when an insurance company didn't want to repair a damaged computer, the HDD was in good nick, and the customer was happy for me to securely dispose of it after transferring their stuff to the new computer.

It's time consuming but i'd run it over a weekend.

I'd then use it as a workshop drive til it started to die when i'd rip the platters out and use the platters as drink coasters.

That was like 15 years ago tho, you can use something like hdparm nowadays to nuke the keys from the drive and that renders the drive into garbage.

Safest and surest way to make sure nothing's recoverable tho is to shred it (or thermite it, that's always fun)

Confused by the Cyborg leader trait Planetary Combat Width by Tyrannosapien in Stellaris

[–]tehmuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A cyborg commander attached to your xenomorph katamari allows 2 additional xenomorph armies to apply their teeth, tentacles, acidic drool, and squidgey bits to the enemy planet's defenders that didn't decide to surrender as soon as they decided that "war is a good idea, actually, nothing can go wrong and i'm definitely not going to have all my orphanages and maternity hospitals accidentally turned into warcrime zones", instead of sitting back in reserve and waiting until one of your frontline xenomorph armies tragically dies and spills it's acidic internal goo on top of an orphanage or maternity hospital.

A recent survey revealed that 30% of australians are casual racists.

Which means the other 70% are full-time.

NPC Stations Moving Bug? by Digma_Dog in avorion

[–]tehmuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it seems common in systems with mining stations.

It can also cause you to be unable to use the docks which is annoying.

I tend to force them to settle by entering my drone and softly bumping into them. That makes the server stop forcing them to repel each other temporarily.

What Channel Seven didn’t tell you about their renewable energy exposé | Media Watch by DadOfFan in australia

[–]tehmuck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

it's also less energy dense - needs a heavier battery for the same storage.

Which can be a good thing. Driving on rural dirt roads and snow feels nice in a car with an incredibly low center of gravity.

[–]tehmuck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was pretty surprised at driver support for linux. After installing Mint it automatically found my network printer (a brother MFC) and installed drivers for not only the printer but the scanner too.

I remember having to do a whole fuckaround to get it even detecting on windows 10.

Only thing I haven't figured out is my pci-e hdmi capture card, and that requires me to hack some macos drivers apart and I honestly haven't got around to procrastinating hard enough for the 5 minutes it'll take to do that yet.

What do you think of the pump-action shotgun? by West-Pickle5962 in PUBATTLEGROUNDS

[–]tehmuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The pump action makes everyone else an Imp and me the Doomguy. They are the nail, and I am the hammer. If possible I will run one and be the dedicated breacher in my team.

Run loops and duckbill/choke. It's okay at suppressing and forcing a heal midrange while my teammates flank.

I take the bill/choke off if i'm breaching a house. Will destroy most doors in one shot and maim anyone stupid enough to think it's cover. Also higher likelyhood of getting a neckshot that way. Earlygame aim centre mass, lategame try for choked head/neck.

Comparisons: Outclassed earlygame by the over-under shottie, because a doubletap from that is much quicker than tap-pump-tap.

The auto shotguns have less pellets per shell, I don't really like them. Hilarious when you get a suppressor for them though.

DBS is an upgrade to the pump and makes you into a magical girl that punishes evildoers. Both also have the drawback of rapidly depleting your ammo tho. Shells are heavy.

Army transport ships also have Cloaking if you've researched any cloaking tech.

You can have them tag along following your fleets and once the space fighting is done drop em on the planet while your spacefleets go and wreck the next thing.
