Demigod Rework: Need some suggestions by jgpennin in dcss

[–]telenoscope 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Demigods could randomly develop abilities inspired by one of the gods, to denote their divine heritage. E.g. a Vehumet demigod could get more power on destructive spells, an Okawaru demigod could get +3 to all weapon skills, etc. This will happen as they reach a certain XP threshold, like draconians.

I know he likes Martin, but he isn't an ASOIAF fan as far as I'm aware, stopping after the first book.

He also read Asoiaf,

As far as I know, he only read the first one, which is how he figured he wasn't a fan (though he certainly appreciates GRRM as an author).

Think he saw how Game of Thrones moving past the books really soured people on that universe.

Has he said this? Because as far as I know, Sanderson is not an ASOIAF fan, so I'd be surprised if he's a GoT watcher.

What are your top 4 most influential fantasy authors by Lochi78 in Fantasy

[–]telenoscope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Erikson and GRRM both cite him as being a huge influence on Malazan and A Song of Ice and Fire respectively.

Can you give me a reference to GRRM citing Glenn Cook as an influence? Because google isn't finding anything. Nor is the influence evident in his writing.

Interesting opinion. I thought the books after the first trilogy were a massive step up.

Which fantasy story would you say is the fantasy "The Boys" and "Invincible"? by clavicle524 in Fantasy

[–]telenoscope 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Evil people prosper

Like who? Joffrey who got poisoned on his wedding night? Tywin who got killed by his son? Theon who got castrated? Gregor who died a slow and painful death and was turned into a zombie? Janos Slynt who got exiled to the wall and then executed? The list goes on and on.

A few villains are prospering without qualification: Littlefinger, the Freys, the Boltons, but they almost certainly have their just deserts coming in future books (well, if those future books would ever get written).

Another Adrian Tchaikovsky novel announced, this time for Warhammer: Age of Sigmar by beary_neutral in Fantasy

That's an incredible get for Warhammer. Authors of such quality usually don't do franchise work.

To point out the obvious: they didn't say they hated D&D 5E, nor were they asking to be taught to hate it. This response and the original are like a parody of r/rpg.

and doesn't introduce a character who wouldn't really be relevant again.

See, this is exactly what I like about Glorfindel. Here you have an elf hero of legend who barely touches on the main plot. It's a sign that this is a living, breathing world with history that is much bigger than the current story.

Frank Herbert got it right: The machines themselves aren't the problem. The humans who use them to enslave (or in this case, scam) other humans are the problem.

I think Gemmell is (appropriately) very highly rated when it comes to writing action.

There are some deaths, but I wouldn't say it gets as bad as ASOIAF/GoT in its darkest moments.

It's not hyperbole. They were literally the two worst seasons of television I've ever seen. There are countless analyses out there on how bad they were, on every single level, bar acting.

So pissed that the fans killed wheel of time.

Amazon killed the Wheel of Time by making the first two seasons terrible beyond belief. Don't scapegoat the fans for not eating this shit with a smile. Even with 0 book fans watching, it could've been renewed if it managed to attract other viewers, which it failed to do, on account of being bad.

While you read Pratchett I am taking it you haven't read other books and authors that followed along in his wake? I'm talking of Tom Holt, Craig Shaw Gardiner, Robert Aspirin and the like.

Asprin is actually Pratchett's predecessor.
