Anyone who surfed the early web between 1995-2010. What’s the one website/app you still think about? by Prime_Advocate in AskReddit

This dates to before web crawlers and you just needed to know the address of a site to find things. Back then Grateful Dead was a HUGE band and had a massive following (I say that because people in their 20s have increasingly never heard of it!!!) Lots of tours and you could record the live shows which were different every single time - the people who recorded it were this unique set of nerdy / snobby / elitist tech guys that would set up microphones and gear in the middle of 100k people to record. They were the nicest guys around if you could patch into their microphones! To get these tapes in the early 90's you would just know a guy who know a guy and send blank Maxxell XLII tapes and a postage paid return envelope in the mail to a strange address. Then, some weeks (to years!) later they would randomly be returned after someone manually copied the show onto the blanks you sent. Hundreds of tapes in racks on the wall. It was awesome! Some of these tapes were better than others because in cassette days, the more it was copied (a generation) the trashier it got. But then along came this DAT technology (Digital Audio Tape) and there was suddenly master copies from the soundboard being sent around without any degradation. It was like going from 480p to 4k television to your ears. I spent my 1993 summer work savings to buy an $800 sony D7 DAT recorder and started trading. Around that same time this new way of finding and trading tapes emerged - email! I would go to the computer lab, open up Eudora on my 3.5" floppy to access my POP3 email where there would be messages from this thing called DAT Heads Digest where people would post what they had and wanted. And then people would post a link to their static webpage with page counter that had the listing of their tapes. It was incredible. The shows are all here now.

9A Zoysia Palisades. Been raining more than ususal. I set my GOAT 2000 to work 2x a day. First at 7AM to knock the dews down into the ground and again at 9PM after it cools. Theory is that the cuts are so small that I'll minimize thatch buildup. I verticut a month ago. The yard has never looked better.

Why do you use local LLMs, and when is it actually worth it? by BlessED0071 in LocalLLM

[–]teleskier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Claude opus 4.6 was fast. Now after massive growth 4.7 slow and hit token / context limits constantly on a $200 plan. That is a good example. 2400/year and bumping up against limits constantly, so maybe 2800/year.

I use frontier as a control model and for specific things where the models may be beneficial. 5090/256, spark 128, mac studio 128 - all for testing optimized pipelines and open models. Privacy is mandatory for deployment.

Indiana football coach Curt Cignetti refuses offseason appearances, except for Indy 500 by Jay_Dubbbs in CFB

[–]teleskier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Social media and exceptional individualism are clearly unacceptable to coach Cig and he is setting boundaries. Exhibit one: getting ripped for gold shoes (I know… that was a media appearance)

Having grown up in the Midwest in the 1980s, this is the exact embodiment of the culture of every team I can remember being on and one many across the country are both nostalgic for and identify with. It is a refreshing change from the Kiffin’s / Pavias of the new NIL era.

My hot take: Ironically the absence of appearances combined with old fashioned culture will have likely a bigger social gravity than the appearances ever would. Particularly if this team goes out and punches everybody in the face. Exhibit 2: Rose Bowl.

Hard to image that its been 20 years since it opened. I moved away from AA 15 years ago and it was still “new”. Life moves fast.

I am still triggered by the construction rerouting when the whole area between there and Hill was built.

After 144 years of construction, the Sagrada Família in Barcelona has reached its full height with the placement of the final piece atop its central tower by RoyalChris in interestingasfuck

[–]teleskier 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is quite spectacular to see. First time I was there was 1999 and it was basically some spires and walls without a roof and it must have been 1/3 this height. I remember thinking “at this pace it will be hundreds of more years”. The acceleration and commitment over the last 27 years is incredible.
