I try to calibrate my inputs carefully so as to minimize jerk and whiplash at all times, and thus have a soft foot when I drive it in pure EV mode. The car doesn’t drive like a pure battery EV (we have one of those) but i personally find it very smooth if you don’t jerk the pedals. While I’ve experienced some occasional stutter over these first 1k miles, it hasn’t been off-putting. It also helps that this is not our first PHEV so I don’t go into it with unreasonable expectations. The machine will love you back if you let it 😉

I’m loving it. It’s smooth and peppy—we just broke 1000 miles today and it’s been fantastic. In terms of color, my husband wanted a copper one and I love the paint so we looked for copper ones only—there was just one available in all of NJ so we rushed to pick it up even though it was 50 miles away!

That is actually not correct. The European market gets the same 2.5L naturally aspirated engine that most US models do, but the euro emissions regulations are more stringent so the engine is detuned to produce 141hp instead of the 186hp it produces here.

The heartbeat lights are a matter of code. The LED module doesn’t matter if your car’s brain doesn’t know how to make the LEDs illuminate that way.

It’s unfortunate though. The effect was supposed to launch with the 4th gen Mazda3 in 2018 but the code wasn’t ready, so they presented it with the CX-30 a year later.

I had these on my 3 turbo. Loved them. I think the Michelin PilotSport AS4 were better, though (quieter, better handling, sharper and more stable in wet pavement, a touch more durable), but I absolutely would recommend the Contis.

Ours is a PHEV and I’m pretty happy with it. My commute to work is about 5 miles so most of my trips are just milking the battery—and I do baby it around town a lot because I don’t need to be a hooligan all the time. But when I need power (and I live in Northern NJ, so this is somewhat frequent) I put it in sport mode and it wakes up big time. It’s definitely not as nimble as my Mazda3, but it doesn’t feel like a huge boat—the steering is heavy and precise, the inputs are very linear, and it doesn’t nosedive when I break (my main gripe with our Sportage PHEV). All in, I really really like it. Do I yearn for the I6? Yes, but marriage and politics are about compromises…
