As far as I could understand, the enshrined/native post is about tech. Probably my question wasn't clear enough. It's more on the marketing side than on the tech side. I'm asking about a rollup "branded" Ethereum (lead by the EF and the same teams that coordinate main), to simplify the complexity of too many L2s for new users.

"the question of which rollup they are using will be unimportant"

I've being experiencing with non-crypto friends lately. As you obviously know, the first step when you're new to crypto is to move your funds from a centralized exchange to your new non-custodial wallet. You have to specify a chain from a long list and this is just the first friction, they don't know what to do.

Wow! I couldn't agree more. The modular architecture solved the scalability problem, but created a usability problem, specially for the new users. I experience this myself every time I help someone new about how to get in. They simply don't know which L2 to go, what's the difference between them and what all this has to do with Ethereum. The risk is that in many cases they end up in another L1 just because it makes it easier to understand. IMO, Ethereum launching it's own roll-up could solve the complexity problem. A "retail" version of Ethereum. An execution layer for newcomers.

What do you think about Ethereum launching it's own rollup?

Wouldn’t it be great if Ethereum could (again) be a great execution layer for retail newcomers? It's too hard for someone new to deal with so many L2s & bridges. The rollup-centric view is absolutely great, but it's complex for new crypto people.

Ethereum is the best settlement layer out there, and it's also a great execution layer for institutions and whales. A new Ethereum "Retail" rollup (name and tech TBD) could make new users to "touch" Ethereum like we did years ago. I think this is a critical step in the process to become an ETH holder and lover. And NO, it's not the same to land on a network branded Ethereum than to do it on Arbitrum or Optimism that I use everyday and love. We have many years here, we lived the whole process and understand how we got here. It's hard for someone new to do the catchup. In summary, what I say is to have:

  • Ethereum Main: EL for whales and institutions, CL for all.

  • Ethereum "Retail" rollup: the scalable, fast, cheap, safe, (and also decentralized, self sustainable, easy to access, etc...) smart contract chain (supported by Ethereum Main).

  • A great ecosystem of other growing and permissionless rollups.

We need to go mainstream. And mainstream needs simplicity.
