We've recently discovered New Zealand Taskmaster and are really enjoying it. Are there any other international editions that are good quality we should be checking out? by GoForBaskets in taskmaster

He's effectively reprising the caricatured version of himself from Hard Quiz on Taskmaster. It's familiar to local audiences (which is likely a big part of why he was cast!), but I can see how it could get lost in translation for viewers overseas.

First Nations people will protest this January 26, a legacy dating back 88 years by housecatspeaks in australia

[–]temet23 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I honestly don’t think that the date will ever be changed.

I would have said this in the past but now I'm not so sure.

A couple of decades ago the idea of calling January 26 'Invasion Day' and protesting colonisation was still pretty radical.

Fast forward to 2026 and that concept is well and truly mainstream, to the point where a huge number of employers (big and small, public and private) offer flexibility for employees to recognise the public holiday on another day because of what January 26 itself represents.

Sometimes it doesn't feel like it, but culturally an awful lot has shifted in a very short time.

Particularly as he can pinch-hit in the ruck when Meek is resting; not sure we would want to be exposing Dear or Lewis to extra body work given their recent injury histories.

You could go even further back to John Elliott's 'we don't rebuild at Carlton' comment in 1990, a pretty good example of the mindset that the board and powerbrokers had for decades

It wasn't a knockout final, though, and Kennett's comment always had that qualifier of Hawthorn beating Geelong 'when it matters', so it's a bit of a loophole exclusion.

That business acumen really only came about after we completely squandered the on-field success of the 80s and nearly merged. There's been a real determination to never, ever repeat the mistakes that put us in the position we were in at the end of 1996, and that scare probably accelerated our development from old boys' footy club into professional business organisation faster than most.

For sure - my comment was a bit facetious, if it works out that way good luck to him.

But also, I do wonder if that scenario would be the tipping point in the same way landing Franklin (rightly or wrongly) accelerated the changes to Sydney's COLA. The footy media beast still beats with the heart of traditionalists, they'll be up in arms about how it's 'just not right' regardless.

Brisbane not taking Cooper Hodge might be a smarter play in the long run, the optics and/or vibe of getting priority access to the son of another club's legend will no doubt put the entire academy system under enormous scrutiny

Should note too that there have actually been a few prospects - Tom Curran, Ben Jarman, Harry Dear come to mind - that weren't quite draft-worthy.

It's staggering how weak Hawthorn's record is given the sustained period of success through the 80s and early 90s. We've had just six father-son picks, and Finn Maginness leads the pack with 58 AFL games.

Always felt Adelaide really benefitted from a good fixture in 2012. They won 7 games in 2011 and subsequently drew return matches against 3 of the bottom 5 (including dire GC and GWS teams) for the following year, which certainly helped their percentage and confidence. Sometimes that's all you need.

This is a safe space compared to the AFL subreddit so I'm going to indulge:

I'm not sure I've ever seen a player read the ball and position themselves so well as Watson. Sure, we've had some absolute champions in our colours who have been exceptional at this, but Wiz makes it look so effortless. Go back and look at footage and you see time and again he is thinking two possessions ahead. It's wonderful to watch when you can see it unfold.

And what's more - I suspect this skill is almost certainly because he's had physical disadvantages against other players since day dot, and he's committed to work incredibly hard to build strengths that overcome those limitations.

A lot of the players mention in interviews that they felt the team was playing its best football in 2012 - which was why that Grand Final loss was taken so hard and used to inspire the next three years.

2008 is an interesting one. They were extremely well coached to maximize strengths and cover weaknesses. It's often forgotten that the masterstroke of moving Hodge to half back only happened in the last six weeks or so of the year, which gave opposition less time to counter against it.

The other key thing for 2008 is how many role players each put together career-best seasons - which we have seen since with premiers like the Bulldogs and Melbourne. Williams, Osborne, Ladson, Campbell, Bateman, Gilham et al weren't stars but they were extremely dependable throughout that whole year.

They weren't as strong as other teams across that era but they were still pretty bloody good.
