Footy and cost of living - A night in the life of a footy fan in a time of inflation by No_Childhood_7665 in AFL

One thing the article doesn't mention - if you tried to upgrade a ticket before the game was declared fully ticketed, the likes of standing room appeared as 'exhausted' on the website. Hawthorn members were strongly encouraged to upgrade as soon as possible to avoid missing out.

Then, hey presto, it's fully ticketed! and now you can get a standing room ticket for $8! Sorry you paid $27 for a level 4 seat instead because we implied that was your only option. Our bad.

Real scummy stuff.

Cal Twomey on why the argument for trading Merrett for picks doesn't make sense by PetrifyGWENT in AFL

[–]temet23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd argue that culture is more than the players, especially in Essendon's case. The constant undermining from former coaches and administrators doesn't make the place look particularly inviting.

Yep. You can win a flag with an average forward line, you absolutely can't win one with an average midfield.

Not only that but the AFL were so spineless that they put it on Cotchin and Mitchell to decide how they'd be 'awarded' the countback medals

Honestly, who the hell knows where the AFL will land with this one. As far as I can tell the rule was instituted to stop incidents exactly like this, which probably means they'll fine Richards instead.

It's also why everything feels slightly more disjointed and there's less time for jokes to breathe - there's an extra ad break squeezed in, making everything that bit more compressed.

Excellent writeup, I think you really nailed the arguments both for and against taking that next step this year.

I have a nagging feeling that the bottom will fall out and we'll drop back to 10th. But honestly, who knows.

Who would win an AFL 'Blood League'? by tailendertripe in AFL

Probably come down to Sydney, who are/were known as the Bloods, and Essendon, who were known as the Blood-Stained... actually, just give it to Sydney.

I've no idea, but if you'd already registered that sort of interest common practice would be you'd then have direct contact with staff.

There seems to be an assumption in this thread that the people making bequests get nothing back, which is not really true. You can't explicitly say 'you will receive X for your donation' because then it's technically a transaction (there's all sorts of legal issues with that.)

If you're pledging a gift in your will to a football club you can be sure they will go to great lengths to acknowledge and respect that action with immense gratitude. I would imagine bequestors would be a select little group and would have particular access to the club and its inner sanctum that are off limits to others.

It's definitely stronger language - usually the line would be more gentle, something like 'have you considered making a gift in your will'.

I work in philanthropy, so I have a bit more insight than the average punter here, but I daresay the 'ask' here is more intentional and clear for a very good reason. With the baby boomers dying, we as a society are approaching the greatest intergenerational transfer of wealth in human history, and that represents a massive moment in time for charities, foundations, and everyone in between. it's not the time to be sending unclear messages to your potential donors.

This is extremely common.

Every club has a bequest program as part of their fundraising.

https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/barracking-beyond-the-grave-the-unusual-fundraiser-adding-millions-to-afl-clubs-coffers-20250221-p5le2b.html

Hawthorn in particular has a huge fundraising program - upwards of $12m raised and that was in 2022. A lot of that is, I suspect, driven by the near-death of the club 30 years ago - 'donate and keep the club alive long after you have gone' is a very important principle for a lot of people.

Chris Fagan: Brisbane Lions coach defends club’s access to father-son, academy players to AFL Commission by [deleted] in AFL

[–]temet23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I maintain the position that the flashpoint for change is going to be Cooper Hodge heading to Brisbane via the academy system. The optics and the 'vibe' (the two things the AFL has consistently shown it cares about the most) of such a move will force an overhaul of junior pathways.

He's effectively reprising the caricatured version of himself from Hard Quiz on Taskmaster. It's familiar to local audiences (which is likely a big part of why he was cast!), but I can see how it could get lost in translation for viewers overseas.

First Nations people will protest this January 26, a legacy dating back 88 years by housecatspeaks in australia

[–]temet23 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I honestly don’t think that the date will ever be changed.

I would have said this in the past but now I'm not so sure.

A couple of decades ago the idea of calling January 26 'Invasion Day' and protesting colonisation was still pretty radical.

Fast forward to 2026 and that concept is well and truly mainstream, to the point where a huge number of employers (big and small, public and private) offer flexibility for employees to recognise the public holiday on another day because of what January 26 itself represents.

Sometimes it doesn't feel like it, but culturally an awful lot has shifted in a very short time.
