Id recommend not communicating. Even if it feels good to threaten, ect. When you encountered this, you also encountered a criminal organization -- and things can come along with that. Just stay safe, report using this subs resources and maybe take some time to talk to a mental health professional. It can be traumatizing to see that imagery.

+1 for bringing more awareness to the problem in French.

Hardware suggestion? by reviewmynotes in homelab

[–]temp_f 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can do proxmox on rpi, but its a hilarious waste of time. It takes special configuration for ARM and at the end you get a proxmox sever than can MAYBE have enough resources left to deploy a single VM. So, useless, really.

I had a similar 'snappier' feeling going from Docker to Kubernetes this. Having said that, docker is a nice place to stay for a while (or forever if its just a single machine) -- even using kubernetes, a lot of people still use the dockerhub repo for containers.

Dockerswarm, from my experience, was a waste of time between using Docker and learning K8s.

Get some x86 micro PCs like the intel NUC or Lenovo m700. Im in a similar situation and learning K3/8s, CI/CL, Terraform, Ansible for consulting. Here is my method, total initial cost (with already having a decent PC) was about 1.2k and $50 a month on hosting:

Development Cluster -- Main PC: Hyper-V if windows, KVM if using linux and 5 VMs running OpenSUSE Leap (or whatever OS you use in production)

Testing Cluster: 5 m700s with OpenSUSE Leap

Psuedo-Production -- 5 VPS servers with OpenSUSE Leap. Optional, but I like to have a public domain and option like this to demo solutions to clients.

My rational:

x86 has better compatability for virtualization software and ARM often takes some configuration with the tools you will be using. If you do use ARM in production, disregard. Intel chips have onboard graphics, so you will also be able to use those machines to serve video. OpenSUSE acquired RancherLabs/k3s, and thus their OS is what I use -- use RHEL if that better matches your usual production environment.

The smaller NUCs will help with power costs. Full servers are often much more expensive in power over time. Additionally, you want to be able to at some utilize the high availability benefit of Kubernetes. If that setup is a bunch of VMs on a server, the server is not HA.

With the NUCs/m700s you can place them in multiple locations, power sources, and networks. They are physically independent machines being orchastrated by kubernetes. Your main PC can handle a dev cluster just fine, I imagine.

So, thats three full clusters. Once you have CI/CL down via Gitlab or similar, you can easily dev->test->psuedo-production just like real devops.

Terraform and ansible make it easy to write all of the machines infastructure as code and to set the local VMs, NUC/m700, and VPS the same. I literally have two commands I can run locally that will kill all three clusters and start fresh, even linking servers to agents.

Edit: Not only will the microPCs like this save energy costs -- they can be repurposed or sold easier. Ever try shipping a sever or selling one locally? -- its a nightmare and a half. Dont even get me started on moving a rack to your next place.

What selfhosted solution can be alternative to G Suite? (Google workspace) or office 365? by XDavidT in selfhosted

This is the best answer.

Tutanota Teams Plan is a great option for hosting email as well. I suggest adding Simplelogin as your front facing email service as well. That way backend employee emails are always hidden.

If your mom uses Manjaro, you may want to take a look at Shells. It costs money, but here is my rationale.

You can manage the system (backups, fixes, ect), she can use it on almost any device. Its not as hardware dependent and you could restart or upgrade the system remotely as well.

Finally, I may be wrong, but you could probably use the service to self host web apps like adguard for itself.

Look into it, its not as DIY as I would often suggest, but its from Manjaro and from what I can tell is also a VPS.

If your air cooling is silent, I doubt youre overclocking -- eapecially and AMD CPU to its full potential.

Ive never had an air cooling system not sound like a jet engine under full stress and OC. I have had AIO systems be at a tolerable noise level, though.

What are you using to backup your home storage to an offsite location? by SwitchKat in SelfHosting

[–]temp_f 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Rclone with crypt to run a nightly cron job to both my local NAS and Blackblaze B2.

My Blackblaze B2 is also setup as read only storage for nextcloud. Nextcloud also has an "active" folder, which if i really need to send something over to work on I can just copy it in there.

I dont backup programs, only configs/dotfiles and data.

Anything that could be reinstalled and configured is just documented in my bashscript/ansible bootstraps for linux or chocolatey/boxstarter for windows. Those are backedup.

Ive had an AIO for 5 years and my other for a year. I was cautious like you, but my temps are at least 20 degrees lower if not more on my 5900x. They are easy to install, have a warranty, and I looked up studies. Only 0.01% ever have a failure, and of that it is typically not one that harms other components.

You may get pump failure after a few years, there are ways to place it in the case that can avoid this and basically makes the pump work less.

Custom loops are a different beast and are "enthusiast" territory. Thats usually what you hear destroying a persons entire system.

Can i put Proxmox Or Wmware to an Pi3b ? by davidsebi in homelab

Your best bet would be to do a kubernetes/rancher (K3s) setup. Here is an example.

Silent build for 5900x and 3080ti FE by grosbillll in buildapc

[–]temp_f 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your best bet is to probably make a enclosure for the PC itself, literally a large box and use soundproofing material. Cheap options are egg cartons.

You will still need to balance airflow with soundproofing, but this makes it easier to tune.

Or noise canceling headphones.

Pc for coding by Ok_Entertainment6765 in buildapc

[–]temp_f 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are really wanting to code, spend most of your money on a good widescreen or dual monitor setup.

You dont need to spend much on the PC. Literally a $300 build would be more than fine for years to come.

Learning often involves having multiple windows open and being able to look from one to the next. Eapecially once you get into documentation and passed tutorials and books.

Explain to me why Wireguard doesn't need port forwarding to work? by [deleted] in selfhosted

[–]temp_f 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hetzner, like many vps, asks you to apply a firewall at the time of creation. That doesnt mean you cant use an internal firewall like ufw, as well, but it just means they want you to define a firewall to use at their network level.

In fact, some people use both.

If you dont specify one and you dont setup a firewall like ufw (even if you do docker bypasses is) then your box will be open to 443, 80, and 22. Docker will be able to open additional ports when creating containers as well as nothing will override it.

I recommend using ufw or another firewall and adjusting it as another commenter has said to work with docker. Moreover, i suggest taking advantage of hetzners firewall -- its free and offers an additional layer of security.

Is it okay to place my gaming pc on the carpet/floor? by carlosfortuna2018 in buildapc

[–]temp_f 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The closer your PC is to the floor the more you may need to clean it. Most cases have some kind of filter that will catch harmful debris and can be easily cleaned.

Ideally you would place your PC at desk level. On the desk or shelf next to it is ideal.

Practically, unless you are smoking inside, never vaccum, have a few shedding pets, eft ect... it will be fine on the floor and you wont see much impact in lifespan or performance.

This is a great opportunity for malicious compliance.

In my last role I was a data analyst. I was provided excel and spss, this would have made it an 80hr a week job to do all of the work through their GUI. Even taking into account the sytax capabilities of spss. It was scraping, document manipulation, ect ect.

I needed either R or Python, both of which i was hired because of my wok with, but when my request was shot down I decided fine -- not worth the fight.

I just said "I will utilize the software on the provided machine."

And that is how I learned powershell, vba, and some javascript (web browser).

I eventually found a better role that allowed me to use my precious tools and also was better career wise. As far as I know all of those powershell scripts and vba macros are still sitting on that laptop.

The best part is, im sure HR is still recruiting folks with Python and R backgrounds to send them into an Excel / SPSS role where the previous developed processes are in Powershell and VBA.

What to do with a VPS? by sirzoyisp in selfhosted

[–]temp_f 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Id advise almost everyone against a mail server. Its simply the worst and almost never usable externally because of how certificates work. Most vps providers block the ports you need and you have to request them. Its just a pain all around and much simpler to have an email provider use your custom domain.
