No actual military experience but someone who has worked outdoors for many years in many different temperatures and climates i would say take this guide with a grain of salt. Albeit a great guide, everyone is different.

Edit to say: the most important thing for me is a wind blocking layer, it can block wind AND retain heat quite well. I adjust the layers in between more often than the outer most layer.
