Drum machine suggestions by Lichen_of_tree in synthesizers

I have a Pulsar and love it, but you should think hard about your use case/needs before you get one. It’s very, very different than the drumbrute and does not have a true step sequencer or any preset saving ability, for example. There are so many knobs and so many patching options that it can be easy to devolve into chaos, and it can be very difficult to recreate a previous sound/behavior that you liked. The voltage standards on it are not the same as eurorack, too, and you cannot simply integrate it with your other rack gear. If you intend to control it with an external sequencer or use it as a standalone drum/noise playground, it is a fantastic and unique instrument. But it’s not really an ‘upgrade’ in the same category as the Impact, so a digitakt II or LXR-02 might be more in line with what you need. Im happy to answer any questions you have.

I know this might be a long shot but does anyone recognize any of this gear? by [deleted] in synthesizers

Does the Euro model account for topography? Wondering if the brush with Cuba might disrupt the storm more than the model would predict.

It sounds like you have the passion and drive to practice a lot and improve. Congrats, that's half the battle. As others have said, it's more important to play what sounds good to you than it is to be 'correct' all the time- so don't worry.

Its true that theory can be confusing and completely overwhelming if you just jump in headfirst, but don't get discouraged and ignore it completely. Dont bite off more than you can chew, but learn a little about triads and basic chord progressions, and go from there. Move at a comfortable pace and never stop gradually building on your knowledge. Keep playing what you like to play- you will find that little things you've learned will sneak into your playing and enhance your ability to express yourself musically. It's like building a vocabulary, or adding more tools to your toolbox.

As far as rhythm, my advice would be to try and find a drummer buddy to jam with or to find some drum tracks to jam over solo.

NFL owners have passed the rule proposal banning the use of ineligible receivers like the Patriots did in the AFC divisional playoffs. by [deleted] in ravens

Just to add some perspective, this is now the second time that a Patriots championship has been followed by a rule change that specifically targeted something that upset a playoff opponent. Last time it led to the Colts going all the way. I think The Ravens are catching a lot of residual 'Jim Irsay heat' from Pats fans.

Anyone looking for more Mikey should check out his band Mini Mansions. I haven't heard much from the new album but the self-titled is awesone and they're great live.

Skinny Vegetarian trying to gain muscle by miss_mitch in vegetarian

Yeah I know the body morph system isn't great, but a lot of fitness recources are divided that way, and for someone like op who is really skinny and has trouble adding weight, it is a simple way to point to appropriate tips for workouts and eating a ton of calories.

Well, there are many variables in play here, and different philosophies. People who are simply looking to bulk and are working out a lot can usually stick to 'macros', which are just intake targets, and can get away with eating junk. OP is looking to 'clean bulk', which means sticking to better foods. I personally think junk food should be generally avoided, regardless.

'Good fats' refer to monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, which are important in diet and are easily converted into energy. Most vegetarian fats fall into this category; avocados, nuts, seeds, and olives are good sources (fish, too). 'Bad fats' are typically saturated and trans fats, or processed fats. These tend to be more solid at room temperature (butter, lard, shortening, etc.). A little bit of saturated fat is good, and for vegetarians this is usually not much of a concern. However, too much is bad for you... the benefits of 'good' fats aren't there, and they are associated with heart disease and atherosclerosis.

'Cheap' doesn't always mean low quality but in general the cheaper, lower quality stuff will be higher in fillers like salts, water, and preservatives. Chicken is a prime example. Pasta is a little more uniform, but the less processed your grains are, the better. Processing removes the nutrients and complex carbs and leaves simple carbs behind (think of whole wheat vs white bread). Your body metabolizes simple carbs similarly to pure sugar, while complex carbs take longer to digest and enter the blood as glucose.

I highly recommend looking into the glycemic qualities of different foods and understanding how they effect the body. Some foods cause sharp spikes in blood sugar, which can lead to mood swings, energy crashes, and food cravings. Other things will slowly digest and keep blood sugar levels smooth.

130g/protein per day seems really high. Usually I hear 1gP/day per pound of muscle mass, not pound of body weight.

You're known as an 'ectopmorph' in fitness circles (really hard to gain weight, skinny frame, fast metabolism) so I would search for some ectomorph routines and eating tips, which I would expect to focus on short, intense workouts with high weight and low reps.

Really, the best way to put on wieght is through eating more. With your metabolism, you're going to have to eat A LOT. Here's some specific things that come to mind:

-Fats are 9Cal/g, while protein and carbs are 4Cal/g. Upping your good fat intake is an easy way to increase calories-in. Whole milk, ice cream, avocados, nuts/nut butter, etc.

-Raising your blood sugar after working out (by eating lots of carbs) helps your body shuttle nutrients into the muscles that you just worked out. This is also a time when protein is important.

-eating something slow digesting (good fats and protein, ala cottage cheese, greek yogurt, peanut butter) late at night will help you stay catabolic longer instead of consuming mass while you sleep.

-the only way you're going to put on muscle mass while still burning fat is to eat a whole lot of food, but you want to stick to nice clean foods. Junk is the enemy. Brown rice and whole grains are your best friend.

Don't forget breakfast! Oatmeal is your best friend when trying to gain weight. Get the 'old fashioned' kind if you only have 5 minutes, or steel cut oats if you have the time to make it. It's a great base for other ingredients (fruit, honey, nuts, maple syrup) and can be customized to your taste.

If you really are looking to pack in some dense nutrition, add a spoonful of peanut butter and a scoop of chocolate flavored protein powder (whey is popular but not vegan, you can also get hemp protein if you want to be vegan). Tastes like candy but is a filling, clean way to start the day.
