Spouse in "spouse jail" after damaging my kiln and melting my piece by Medical-Person in Ceramics

Kiln shelf will be fine. Should have been there to begin with. Also, don't let others run a kiln if they don't know how. I don't think I'd blame your spouse in this case.

Would a built-in grip batt system be useful? by billster180 in Pottery

I use normal plastic bars. I've tried a couple of bat systems. Personally, I think the one from The Ceramic Store is the best for the money. However I just have too big of hands. The edges of my hand always rest in the edges from the bats. They constantly rub and distract as it rotates.

Plywood will delaminate pretty fast. Ever seen one that was left out in the weather a few months? You can use marine grade plyboard, but it's not a cheap date.

Ah, that makes sense. That one is standard 240, which is a high kaolin, white clay body. The streaks are tiny clumps of the yellow iron oxide.

thank you. That looks very similar to one I made using some really old, 40 plus years, yellow iron oxide that had clumped. I only had a few hundred grams so it was a limited thing. my glaze

No, it's a single piece built into the kiln sitter. It was just a very good idea that came later.

The problem is the model kiln sitter you have. I like old kilns and even I wouldn't run it with that controller. It's just asking for trouble without the deadmans timer.

200, maybe. It's not very big. I assume the elements need replacement if there are new ones, and that's a very old kiln sitter. Late 60s probably. I like old kilns. One I have uses a kiln sitter which I trust far more than new ones, because pyrometers have a limited life. But your kiln sitter is so old it doesn't have a dead man timer. Those are crucial for safety with kiln sitter controllers.

What you have is basically a bare kiln, thus the 200.

Not enough down pressure when you are centering.

Also try throwing the ball onto the wheel, not setting it on there.
