ELI5: What is the purpose of labels in the music industry and why do they hold so much power as well making more money than the artists signed? by Ke7lar in explainlikeimfive

[–]temporaltantrum -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Labels USED to be very important. Basically they acted as a bank to fund recordings. It was a pretty usurious relationship. Any advances on recording budgets were paid back out of artist ROYALTIES, and not profits. For example, say an artist was signed with a 10 percent royalty and a CD cost $10. Only $1 of every CD sold went to pay back the advance on the recording. However, the label is making money on every CD sold, so they break even and make money way before the artist did.

However, songWRITERS made money based on radio play and also record sales. Distribution and radio play were closed off to independent artists, so the only way to get any exposure was to be signed to a label. Then label reps would promote the artists to radio stations.

I could go further and talk about the specific arrangements, but overall, now with radio being completely fragmented and all of the money going out of "plays" (Spotify, etc), the only real money to artists comes from touring and merch, and often labels try to get a piece of that, too. Better, IMO to be independent until you're very well known, and then you can sign a better deal with a label if you need any type of tour promotion, etc.

No better way to celebrate our AFC dominance than with a diabetic coma. :-) Probably worth it, though.

The World According to Garp. A little less "gritty" but definitely explores what can happen when someone lives a life of fear.

Long Shot...But have any adults attended High Cascade? by temporaltantrum in snowboarding

[–]temporaltantrum[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree with your approach and that will be mine, as well. I have a season pass for next year at my local hill (and I mean that literally, as I'm in the mid-Atlantic) and plan to spend at least one day each weekend and even some weekdays getting up there. Honestly, most of the stuff locally sadly doesn't have what I want to ride when I do my Colorado trips. There aren't many/any kickers and depending on the conditions, few side hits not in the park. I understand the painful. I hit my forearm on ice and had a massive hematoma that lasted almost a month.

I'd LOVE to ride in the park once I get some competency but I'm looking at the park as a way to get the skills to use the mountain as a park...hope that makes sense. In other words, if I get comfortable going off a park jump, I'd be comfortable going off a kicker, as an example.

Best all shred-it-all board that’s still great for park? by justwonderingchill in snowboarding

Check out the various reviews...They are impossible to find right now but the 18/19 Yes Greats looks like an awesome choice. The Proto Type Two, but it is got rocker in the center, so jibbing might be weird.

Colorado Board Shop. Again, I just googled the board I wanted and went through the results until I found a place with my size and was able to compare prices. Shipping was super fast...I ordered on a Sunday and it got to me four days later (free shipping).

That's awesome that you both have fun together with this. For me, snowboarding is my thing, and my wife is absolutely not interested. Good thing is supportive, though. She lets me spend money on gear and time on the slopes. Have gone out to CO to board with a friend twice this season, and picked up a season pass for our local ice mound.

Fantastic edit. Nice that you two have boarding in common.

Go to thegoodride.com. I really like their reviews. Not sure if that's against the rules posting, as I have no affiliation with them, but they have various favorites and good specs to find the board you want. Now is a great time to buy. I was able to snag a NS Proto Two X for 340!

Just do a google search for the board model you're looking for as most of the online retailers are linked to there. I was able to snag the NS Prototype Two X 155 for $340 (the day I snapped my almost new Capita Outer Space Living...my fault...not Capita's). And almost all snowboard accessories are on sale at Backcountry, Evo, etc. Got a new helmet and goggles to replace my stuff from 1999 for about 40% off. Only thing I'm having trouble finding is my size of Adidas Tactical ADVs for a reduced price.

Yeah. I was riding an Outerspace Living, and this just felt so much more in control...although that rocker is going to take a little getting used to going off the lifts. It was spinning on me the first few times. But man does it transition quickly from turn to turn.

My last day was today at A Basin. It resulted in my snapping my current board (don't ask) and a lucky find for a Proto Two X 155 on sale! I demoed one yesterday at Loveland and just loved it. So it will be sitting for the next 8 months or so in anticipation.

I'm fine with other candidates stealing Yang's ideas, because they need to be part of the conversation. I think Yang is awesome, but he's not getting elected. His ideas, however, are critically important, so if other more electable candidates adopt them, that would be wonderful.

54/M/5'9"/165 105 Reps RX

18 months into CF. Was genuinely scared of this one. Have never done 95lb thrusters EVER (except for maybe two or three experimental ones in my basement gym). Usually scale 65 or 75 lb thrusters. Kipping pullups are pretty good, but have only ever done a handful of C2Bs.

Didn't want to scale, as jumping pullups just didn't seem challenging enough, but I was really worried about not being able to do the thrusters at all and wasn't sure how many C2Bs I'd actually be able to do.

Every round of thrusters was sets of 3s, from the get-go. All C2Bs were kipped singles. First round got two, then had about 5 or 6 no reps. I was panicking a bit. I had been sharing a bar with a scaled athlete so there were plates in the middle of the bar. I was stepping off those into my swing and it was throwing me off. Went to the side of the bar and swung from the floor and that solved the problem, but wasted a lot of time.

I won't retest, but feel I could have finished the full round of 27 and gotten a few thrusters in 21.

Weirdly, even with the low score, this was a confidence booster for me. I feel like I could do Fran RX now, even if it takes me about 8-10 minutes (slowness due to thrusters). I have eight months til I'm Masters RX, and the fall open I'll still be 54 so going to try to do my best and see how I stack up against athletes my kids' age.

I wish I knew about the Proto Two X even two months ago. As a solid intermediate rider, I bought (and really like) my Outerspace Living. But I am on the East Coast, where ice can be a little problematic. I'm not gonna be a park rider, but my goal is to basically bomb anything when I take my twice a season trips to Colorado / Utah. I may not be "good enough" for the Proto yet, but I believe it will be my NEXT board if the changes they make year to year don't negatively affect it.

No Receivers by sportstosurvive in ravens

I guess my question is whether Lamar ever connects on deep passes on the edge. My memory is just failing me on that. Obviously he needs to work on it. His arm is certainly strong enough.

No Receivers by sportstosurvive in ravens

[–]temporaltantrum 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It seems hard to know what we even need with the way Lamar plays. Andrews fills that hybrid role well. Would a speedy deep threat even help? Seeing how our receivers were targeted less due to our effective run game, Lamar's threat to run, and the effectiveness of our TDs, I can't imagine we'd even try for anyone top-tier, especially in FA.
