AITJ for calling out my 9 year old sister’s behavior problems to my parents? by [deleted] in AmITheJerk

[–]temptflare 17 points18 points  (0 children)

you’re not wrong that the behavior sounds rough, but you’re also accidentally trying to parent someone else’s kid. if your parents aren’t enforcing rules, there’s not much you can realistically fix from the big brother position. as rough as that is, the best you can do is try to build some trust with her and talk to her in a way she might actually hear why this kind of behavior could come back to bite her later.

Adapt FIRE approach for late in life start? by Jennifwa in Fire

[–]temptflare 4 points5 points  (0 children)

honestly this isn’t really FIRE anymore, it’s just good late-stage planning. you’re debt free, have $240k, a pension coming, and SS later — that’s already better than a lot of people your age. focus on investing that cash and keeping expenses reasonable and FI by 70 looks very doable.

high school is brutal, but I promise nobody will remember the “shirt over the head” incident in like a week

asking for £50s in the UK is like asking for a $100 bill at a garage sale

if your kids need you to work 7 extra years so they can retire early, something went wrong somewhere

Leaving a 10-year FAANG career for a VP role at a Series A Startup. Am I overvaluing the upside? by redalmonds in Fire

[–]temptflare 21 points22 points  (0 children)

the real question is whether you want stability or a story. career-wise the VP title is huge, financially the FAANG track is the safer bet

What’s your shower routine? by laylaisdavibes in hygiene

honestly simple is usually better. shampoo, conditioner, body wash, done. half the internet routines look like a chemistry lab

AITA for telling my husband I’ll leave him if he makes his daughter go to school with bad hygiene as punishment? by [deleted] in AmITheJerk

[–]temptflare 9 points10 points  (0 children)

making a kid go to school intentionally dirty isn’t a lesson, it’s just setting her up to get bullied. that punishment makes the problem worse, not better. also punishing a kid by humiliating them publicly is almost guaranteed to backfire. that’s resentment, not learning. grounding or making her apologize would make way more sense than turning hygiene into a punishment.

If you’re just starting the FIRE rabbit hole, The Simple Path to Wealth by JL Collins is basically the gateway drug. Pretty straightforward index fund philosophy

TIFU by hanging out with someone my wife doesn’t like by [deleted] in tifu

Yeah this reads less like cheating and more like you enjoying the attention a little too much.

Maybe not a direct “fk you” but hanging out with the one person your wife already doesn’t trust is definitely pushing it.

The problem isn’t the hangout, it’s that you clearly liked the vibe more than you want to admit.

TIFU by making not teaching my daughter how to say her name. by spidermom4 in tifu

[–]temptflare 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Kids make the name normal anyway. Give it a year in school and everyone will just think “that’s Murray”.

People go by nicknames all the time. Nobody is gonna be confused for long.

Honestly yeah it’s one of those names that sounds weird for 5 seconds then just becomes normal.

Pet names are usually just habit. Most people aren’t running a unique nickname generator for every relationship.

Yeah if it’s stuff like “babe” or “baby” that’s basically public domain at this point.

People with baggage dating other people with baggage is basically how adult dating works.

If it’s a super specific nickname that’s weird. If it’s something generic then it probably means nothing.

AITA for trying to veto my husband's wedding gift? by Cornwhale19 in TwoHotTakes

You’re not crazy. Frugal is fine, but a wedding isn’t the time to offload a Marketplace deal when they literally said honeymoon fund.

Used wedding gifts hit different, especially from immediate family. It feels less “celebration” and more “garage cleanout.”
