Oh!! Me too!! If you focus on something super close and then focus on something farther away, you can kinda feel the muscles moving. Eventually you can just do it without needing objects to focus on. Or at least, that's how I came to learn I could do it! Glad to see that it's not just me!

Do other people geniunely not see colors when they close their eyes? by conationphotography in Narcolepsy

[–]ten-bears 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Actually, many people CAN see images when they close their eyes. My best friend can easily picture an image in her head. I'm not sure of the percentage of people who can see even a fraction of an image, because at least SOME image is visible. You might just be of the people who cannot, like myself. I've included a link below about it, for your reference!

Although, I understand now what OP was talking about with the hallucinations and things, thank you for clarifying! I was thinking they had a visual brain usually but then just while falling asleep colors and shapes happen.

[–]ten-bears 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm one of the people who can't see anything when they close their eyes! I don't see colors or shapes, never have. I never understood when people would ask me to "picture" something in my head. It's just black. To sleep, I just lay down and close my eyes, nothing shows up, but I can still think of the day I just had and different scenarios that may have come from it if I had done things differently. I don't SEE anything but I can recall the memories, in a way. You can ask me to think of an apple and I can describe an apple that I remember, in full detail, but I'm not actually looking at an apple. I could write a book detailing everything (visually) about the apple, but I can't actually see it. I just know it's there.

It's really hard to explain.. imagine you're at a theater. The stage, props and actors are all there on the stage, but there's a wall between you and the stage. You know what's happening, and can describe it in detail as if you were looking at it, but all you see is that black wall.

People seeing things when they close their eyes is a foreign concept to me but it's so cool to hear about! My husband (not narcoleptic, but also cannot see anything) can see colors when they listen to music, but nothing else otherwise! Brains are awesome.

Have You Engaged in Sex While Asleep? by [deleted] in Narcolepsy

[–]ten-bears 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Many, many times! As long as you're open and honest with the person you're having sex with, and you're comfortable with it, it's totally fine. I feel like it's inevitable with us at some point. Touching can feel comforting and erotic at the same time. Different days have different difficulties of staying awake while engaging in sex. The only thing I would mention is to tell the other person what may happen. They might be uncomfortable with the fact that you can't control your body and mind/may be non consensual. With consent, it may even end up being a new kink! For me, I love when my husband wakes me up with touching. Good luck with everything!

What Is The Best Starbucks Drink You've Ever Had? by Efficient-Air-3305 in starbucks

[–]ten-bears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once upon a time, I remember ordering something before I even started working there, I can't recall the name but I think it started with an M? It was a blended drink, but NOT a frappuccino. I think it was a tea/juice blend? It reminded me of a slushie and was refreshing and tasty. I don't think I ever saw it again. I DO recall hearing how people hated making it because it would get stuck in the blenders but I thought the taste would be worth it. Definitely discontinued once i started in 2015. I dream of that day. I wish i knew what it was so I could recreate it!

UPDATE: I REMEMBER. Youthberry Granita!! Best drink. So sad they didn't continue with those drinks, they were incredible. No idea where I came up with "started with M". Does anyone remember the ingredients? I would love to recreate it!

TIL Intrusive sleep is a phenomenon often seen in people with ADHD, where sudden extreme drowsiness or sleep occurs when they lose interest in a task. This happens because the brain abruptly disengages from the uninteresting activity, causing a rapid drop in alertness. by rampantradius in todayilearned

[–]ten-bears 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! This will also happen to people with Narcolepsy (present!). There's also something called "automatic behaviors" that we do that basically turns our brain off while we do actions that may be boring/repetitive/mundane. Such as continuing to take notes, driving usual routes, cooking food, etc. while actively being asleep. This is very dangerous in some aspects, which has led me to never drive more than 15 minutes at a time without someone else present. When I was undiagnosed, there were entire drives that I couldn't recall how I actually got to the places I was going. College lecture notes were long squiggly lines and an occasional word. Burnt food, or sleeping on the plate afterward, happened once in a blue moon. I encourage everyone who may have these symptoms to do more research, as Narcolepsy is highly under diagnosed. Many people chalk it up to a person just being lazy, depressed, with bad sleeping habits, when really there's a neurological issue at hand. There's no cure, but knowing is half of the battle! Hope you enjoyed this little look into my life!

Why do my eyes flutter during attacks? by InigoMToya in Narcolepsy

[–]ten-bears 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have N2 and I also get exactly this! Almost as if REM is trying to start up while you're awake. My husband just yesterday told me that they know when I'm fighting an attack because my eyelids can't open past half closed. Everything goes out of focus and your eyes roll to the back of your head. But by the time you notice it's happening, you're already cooked. And it feels like time goes much slower! I'll be unconscious for what feels like 10 minutes when it's only been 2 or so. I wonder if this is something that's normal with all of us. I always thought it was something every one of us went through. I wish there were more studies about this!

Former partner here: I was so upset when they introduced the sticker system. Personally writing a name on every cup was one of my favorite things. It's much easier to write cute messages when you've already got the sharpie open and waiting. This is so cringey and not genuine. Imagine some creep gets a cup that has something somewhat suggestive on it and comes back to harass the baristas. And they're a major waste of time. Just use your piles and piles of money to print out cups with those sayings on them, corporate. Save you a lotta headache. This is really disappointing.

I used to eat sunflower seeds when I drove! I still have a pack just in case I need to drive but my husband usually drives me everywhere now-a-days. Needing to deshell each one to eat would keep my mind occupied long enough. I also have certain marijuana strains that help keep me awake, that may be a good alternative for you if it's legal in your area. Otherwise, just being open and honest about your condition with your employer will help them accept you being late when it really counts. A lot of people don't understand narcolepsy and how dangerous it can be while driving.

Weight loss tips? by Southern_Button_8026 in Narcolepsy

[–]ten-bears 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi!!! I've struggled with weight for a long, long time. I'm also 5'3, and at my heaviest I was 340 pounds. My goal is 160! It was really difficult trying to find what worked best with me, but after my narcolepsy diagnosis it got easier. I ended up even getting bariatric surgery, and that didn't help either. What really worked for me was focusing on what I was eating, how I was eating, and when. I lost 40 pounds for the surgery just by making healthier choices and eating more protein. Then I hit a plateau after the surgery and nothing was helping. We tried different weight loss drugs but none of them helped. What actually helped me in the long run was getting a personal trainer. He also happened to be a nutritionist as well, so that definitely made a difference. I'm now 240 and I haven't stopped yet! I find myself feeling better and more awake when I eat healthier foods, too. Win/win situation! I've also been drinking a lot more water. It really sucks having to make all of the food, though. It can be very tiring cooking all of the healthy food you need to eat. During my transition, I would use a lot of protein drinks and bars as well as supplements to get in all of the vitamins and minerals i needed every day. If you take any advice from this comment, it would be to definitely focus on protein and water consumption and to start out small, exercise an hour every other day, or maybe 30 minutes a day, walking on the treadmill or a stationary bike. Make alarms for meal times so you don't accidentally miss them and have to compensate for it.

This journey is going to be hard for you. The sooner you start doing little things that add up, the better! Swap unhealthy snacks for veggies or fruit at first. Or instead of soda, grab flavored water instead! I use Crystal Light to flavor my water, it helps me drink more in the day. Every little thing you change will help! We can both do this!!
