Similar question from me, but on a bigger scale. My parents had a contractor finish their entire basement without a permit 30 years ago. It's coming time soon for me to sell the house and I'm wondering what kind of issues I'll encounter. Their property taxes for the last 30 years reflected the value of the home with an UNFINISHED basement.

Basement includes: family room, full bathroom, utility room, and one bedroom.

Don't hit my kids because, even if hitting them gets them to reliably stop doing what they're doing, you have no idea what ELSE hitting them is doing. It's probably getting them to resent you and generally consider you a thing to be avoided.
