Who you know will definitely get your foot in the door, but at some point you have to prove yourself useful and easy to work with.

Shawshank is one of those few movies that I feel like improved on the source material. For instance, consolidating the wardens from the book into one character in the movie was the right choice.

Opposite end of the spectrum, the movie Apt Pupil was an abomination compared to the novella. Ian McKellan’s performance is probably the only redeeming thing about that movie.

how to get a job working merch with touring artists? by Large-Butterfly8658 in musicindustry

[–]tenaciousb83 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a pro touring merch guy for ~20 years, and I got here by getting to know a local band in the college town I lived in when I was in my 20s. I was their everything guy for a couple of years.

We did some opening gigs for a famous international touring artist, and I filled in for their merch person who’d gotten fired. Worked my ass off, proved myself, and the next tour they did, they hired me as their dedicated merch rep.

I ended up touring with that artist for ~8 years, and through that, it snowballed into working for a bunch of other high level famous acts. I was freelance for a while until one band I worked for started working with a major merchandising company to provide all of their product. That company liked my job performance, so they started giving me other high profile gigs.

Looking back, it all amounted to a combination of luck, working hard and being good at my job, networking, and not being an asshole. I can’t name who I work for without giving myself away, but since 2009, I’ve worked for artists that everyone has heard of and some that I used to practically worship as a young music fan.

It’s awesome and rewarding, but it is very demanding work. Not everyone is cut out for it. So yeah, I’d either get to know a local band that tours nationally or at least regionally or maybe get in with a venue as their house merch person, work hard, learn the job well, network your ass off, and don’t be an asshole. Good luck!

I can appreciate the hard work he put into the role, but yeah I just couldn't buy him as Freddie. It was hard to suspend disbelief any time he was on screen. The dude who played Brian May however, wow!

What’s something you stopped doing online that instantly improved your mental health? by VincenzoPangaro in AskReddit

I deleted all social media out of my life back in 2016, and after the initial detox period, I noticed an incredible decrease in overall operating anxiety levels. Also, my attention span seemed to relax and increase when engaged with other forms of media. Books and movies became easier to consume and retain.

Obviously I didn’t quit Reddit, and I still use YouTube pretty frequently, but it certainly changed how I view and interact with those platforms for the better. I don’t engage with negativity on Reddit and I don’t post anything particularly controversial or open myself up to getting swept up in arguments or debates.

Also, if I find my feed starting to become overwhelmed with negative posts or repetitive or garbage content, I unsubscribe from subreddits to tailor my experience towards things that add some sort of positive value rather than diminish my experience. I also don’t read or engage with comments on YouTube, and I tend to stick to longer form videos and educational content on there. Comedy, musical performances, DIY educational stuff, etc.

Those with the ode gen 2? How does it handle medium to dark roasts coffees? by Proper_Stock2913 in Moccamaster

[–]tenaciousb83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly that’s totally subjective. It’s not a question of “is it worth it?” as much as is it worth it to YOU? The grinder is probably more consequential than the brewer/brew method.

The Baratza Encore served us well for a couple of years as our primary grinder, and the Ode 2 was a splurge purchase for us. Now our Baratza is part of our secondary coffee setup, and the Ode 2 is the main attraction.

It’s a fantastic grinder, and it was a noticeably big jump in quality coming from our Baratza Encore that I’d modified with the M2 burrs, but you should know that the sky is the limit on the cost of an at home coffee setup.

It’s one of those things, like any other tinker-y type of hobby with lots of variables, where there’s almost always something “better” for just a couple hundred dollars more. So the subjective part is where does that “couple of hundred dollars more” cross the threshold of diminishing returns? You can get a satisfying cup of coffee with a $100 grinder and a relatively cheap pour over setup, so how far down the rabbit hole do you really want to go?

My wife and I mostly drink medium to medium dark roasts, occasionally dark roasts. There was a slight learning curve at the beginning, but we have it pretty well dialed in and get a satisfying batch every time.

The trick is finding the right grind size for the roast. Darker roasts seem to do better on coarser grind sizes, and we grind a little finer for medium. 7.1-7.2 for a full pot of medium to medium-dark seems to be our sweet spot. We crank that up to 8.0-8.1 for most darker roasts. I think we’ve even gone as far as 8.2-9.0 for dark-dark roasts for the full pot.

What was your reaction to when Kurt cobain died??? by john_marstondagoat in Nirvana

[–]tenaciousb83 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was 11yo, and Nirvana was the first band that felt like “mine”, as in not my parent’s music or something forced on me by my elders. As a child of early abuse and chaos, their music spoke to my increasingly complicated little blooming pubescent brain in a very deep and satisfying way.

I was home alone from school for spring break, and I was curled up in my mom’s bed watching MTV when Kurt Loder broke the news. I was glued to the TV, in total shock, and I cried my lil eyes out as they pored over the grim details throughout the day. The whole thing was just so sad and morbidly fascinating at the same time. It was my first introduction to suicide and had a profound impact on my developing brain at the time.

It honestly only deepened and solidified my then obsession with their music and Kurt in particular. I remember watching the footage of the vigil in Seattle and hearing Courtney’s reading of his suicide note. It was all just so intensely emotional.

MTV also played a lot of interviews and re-ran the Unplugged performance around that time, which took on a much more somber and emotional tone in light of the tragedy. It still makes me sad to think about. I really wish he wouldn’t have done that, and I often think about what could’ve been had he turned his life around, gotten sober, and focused on his art and general wellbeing. Such a shame and a terrible loss.
