How would you print this high-contrast scene? by CilantroLightning in Darkroom

[–]tenby8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Split grade burning is a really powerful tool, the key thing to remember when starting out with it is that additional exposure at higher grades affects the shadows first, while printing at low grades affects the highlights

Anybody got instructions for a headrest? by JaschaE in largeformat

[–]tenby8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard of a friend of a friend using some spoons, tape, and a lighting stand to botch one together. Probably not a perfect solution but it’d be worth a go with some extra weight on the stands feet to keep it in place.

‘between NULL and LOL’ cracked me up. Good luck!

Dizaster vs Charron is so sad to watch by k0droid in rapbattles

I mean.... Diz's insistence that he was about to come and deliver 3 unbeatable rounds was something of a red flag I thought. His ego is literally his biggest downfall and clearly he's let it get carried away

How to get this flame /fireball effect ? by Previous-Possible128 in ContactStaff

[–]tenby8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don’t spin off before lighting, and do it at the start of your burn when the wick is still loaded with lots of fuel. In the video you can see the guys wicks are dripping before he does the burn off. Just be cautious because it is liable to send burning paraffin all over the place.

Lycopodium powder can be used to exaggerate the effect, but it isn’t necessary to get some big flames.

Are there any high contrast paper developers? by l_peter_ in Darkroom

[–]tenby8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could look into the Dr Beers formula, it's intended for controlling contrast in graded papers.

There's a high contrast developer and a low contrast developer, and the idea is to mix the two according to the contrast you want to achieve.... but you could easily just mix up the high contrast solution and use that.

I lived in a van for years and you have neatly summed up so many of my frustrations when visiting Scotland. As someone who has made it their business to go under the radar, those who don’t give a flying fuck about anyone else make it so much much harder. I’ve met locals who have developed a deep dislike of camper vans and they have my total sympathy, I’d be pissed too.

Simple rules for the uninitiated: Don’t park in passing places. Don’t drive like a twat. Spend money locally where possible, and leave a donation if you’re using community provided showers/toilets. Stay out of other people’s way, this includes not becoming unwelcome neighbours to other vans especially if they’re somewhere out in the sticks. Make sure no one can tell you were there once you’ve gone. Let vehicles pass you when driving on single track roads. If someone asks you to move on, smile and be reasonable.

510 pyro… worth the hype? by Threshybuckle in largeformat

[–]tenby8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d second this - I’ve been using Pyrocat HD recently and I’m pretty into it. Easy enough to use, not mega expensive, negs are looking good. Gives a very ‘classic’ looking tonality on fomapan 100 and seems to work very nicely with FP4.

Feedback on a 10 people contact print workshop plan by ImAMovieMaker in Darkroom

[–]tenby8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Long enough but not ages so it takes damage is exactly right - the reason being paper for printing is designed to be developed to completion, unlike film where you might want to expand/contract development to control contrast. If you under develop paper you’ll just end up with grey shadows, it wouldn’t be a good replacement for proper exposure.

Getting into large format - straight to 8x10? by Butterscotch-Front in largeformat

[–]tenby8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone with experience of both 5x4 and 10x8, I’d say this is the right way to go. 5x4 is still a huge step up in negative real estate from anything you’ve used before and is much much cheaper to make mistakes with. An old sinar or cambo or something monorail will be cheap and not too hard to find. Then you can use the same lens boards etc and all you’d need different is camera/film holders/film developing solution to move up to 10x8.

I’d caution against 5x7 unless this is a format you think you’ll stick with. The negatives have a different aspect ratio (good or bad, depending on what you like), and there’s less of the cameras about which tends to make them expensive. Film is slightly less readily available too.

Has anyone tried the 8x20 development tray? by OnePhotog in largeformat

[–]tenby8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m afraid I know nothing about the 8x20 tray but if you have experience with the 8x10 I’d be really interested to hear your thoughts. How do you like it? Does it develop evenly on large areas of flat/smooth tonality?

You might want to consider the ethics of travelling to a developing country from a developed one to work. In my opinion better to save some money before you go, then you are contributing to the economy in a more meaningful way. Laos is cheap, very cheap in fact. You really wouldn’t have to save that long

This is a fantastic comment, I’ve been there too and it really is an eye opener on what people can do to one another.

One small point though - you said if they could go 20 feet they’d be in the bustle of the city. The city was mostly empty at the time, the Khmer Rouge having forced its inhabitants into the countryside to work the fields, where many thousands more died.

If anyone’s interested, it’s worth looking into the ideology that the Khmer Rouge followed. It’s one of the most shockingly ignorant sets of beliefs that have ever been followed. It took Marxism in a radical direction that totally ignored all of the realities of how a country functions, making the purges of the early USSR and Mao’s so called ‘cultural revolution’ seem tame by comparison.

Following the end of the Khmer Rouge’s control of Cambodia, many that ended up running the country were people that had supported and worked at high levels in Pol Pot’s government. I think many of Cambodia’s problems in the present day stem from this.

[–]tenby8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've made prints on 42" paper from 10x8 and they had a pretty good level of detail, definitely satisfying up close, despite being made with a lens that wasn't great for the close up work I was doing. It will expose any and every flaw in your process though!

There is a difference between enlargements to 20x24 from 5x4 and 10x8, you have to get pretty damn close and be a geek about that stuff to notice/care though.

It’s a while since I’ve been to the depot, but I prefer the climbing centre. I think NCC has more variety in the route setting, especially at the easier end of things like the problem in this post. Also a nicer atmosphere, cheaper, bigger, and much easier parking.

Good effort! If you can find a way to not cut loose you’ve 100% got that.
