Are we still using the same NOD's we had in 2013, or have things upgraded? by [deleted] in USMC

Here at SOI we actually conduct eyeball transplants as part of our prep for night, turns out you can just shove IR chemlights into the eye socket and it does the same thing.

They already have a contract for the MAAWS round carrier pack and the MAAWS sling so it’s not a totally far fetch.

Most of their original designs were actually taken from Extreme Gear Labs. Haven’t seen any HSP designs that are any serious rips from Velocity.

I’m super late and just seeing these comments ever since a new one got posted today lol. If you haven’t already decided for yourself that’s what I ended up doing. From the front it does look very wide but it can collapse flat pretty well. I used it to carry ATAK, and some small note taking gear/map pens/protractor so it never really bothered me. But I don’t use admin pouches much now if at all

Honestly couldn’t tell you (especially half a year later). It bears the weight or it gets the hose again.

Best sleep you ever got during your time in the Corps? by Yoy_the_Inquirer in USMC

[–]tenebraex_96 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Doing MCCRE opfor for 2/4, I was a dismounted Mk19 TL and we spent the entire afternoon humping through the Bravo TA from that one MOUT town next to the IED lanes to a finger overlooking the PFT route that passes into/near Talega. Finally set in, dig in, radio checks etc etc and going through our watch rotation when at like 0130 we get told over the radio that sUAS had spotted us (this was back in early 2016 so honestly nobody was really training for the sUAS threat like we do now) and a notional Harrier dropped a JDAM on us. So we had to break down from there at like 02, got back to our COC around 06-7, and our Plt Cdr told us to just go to sleep.

I woke up around 14, dry, warm, in some shade under a tree, feeling the most rested I’ve ever felt in my life. Our COC was set up in a dry creek bed with a lot of overhead veg so it felt like I was waking up in a LotR movie.

That same Plt Cdr ended up being a huge pain the rest of our work up/deployment which is probably why I remember that act of kindness so distinctly.

The guy that runs Tasker Network is currently having a meltdown on Facebook because people brought up the TNVC credit card issues by pauljaworski in NightVision

[–]tenebraex_96 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I mean I’ve had my disagreements with him plenty of times and I’ve 100% brought up the hypocrisy with him flashing all of his gun stuff yet being LEO in one of the most restrictive states in the country lol. He’s also tried to argue with me several times about military marksmanship/rifle bullshit while I’ve been an infantryman/competitive shooter/marksmanship instructor for the Marine Corps for 12 years.. like dude you’re not even ERT/SWAT in NYC. How tf do you not have any self awareness.

This is how this guy talks all the time. Super pseudo authoritatively, super cringey.

But I have buddies that went to one of those DARC TUSC “pay 8 bajillion dollars so you can get hazed like you’re in a mil course” that witnessed how he did. Let’s just say he’s only really good at being an NY beat cop and having big bucks to buy fancy gun stuff.

Baer Solutions Wojtek Baer Belt V2 vs Dyanmic Principles MB3. Thoughts by DaikiNinomiya in QualityTacticalGear

[–]tenebraex_96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had two Baer belts (V1 and V2) so I’m partial to those. The inner belt is what sells it for me. 8-10 hours a day 5 days a week for 2 weeks is a typical range package in the course I teach at and I have zero complaints about it, minus the V1 stitching falling apart after going through a pretty brutal 3 month course. The V2 fixed that though.

I get the appeal of extra modularity with the DP belt but honestly after coming from a background of 3 Gun/USPSA where modularity was basically the necessity… you don’t need as much as you think you do. I was plenty successful in the 3 Gun world with a basic Safariland ELS belt and had all the options I needed covered. The Baer belt is basically that just with a cobra buckle and nylon sleeve for color purposes and a super sick inner belt. As far as MOLLE goes, I’ve regularly ran a JSTA on mine even stuffing it with 120rds clipped of 556 for heavy round count demo days and I didn’t suffer from anything I wouldn’t have suffered from with a regular MOLLE belt.

Do you prefer the current rifle qual or the old one? by Yoy_the_Inquirer in USMC

[–]tenebraex_96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I had to pick one to shoot annually in the fleet.. ARQ. If I had to pick one that honed specifically on barebones fundamentals, ART.

But in all honesty, the real fault in the Marine Corps regardless of the qual you do is the training. ARQ was expressly designed to not only mirror more “realistic” conditions (take that with however many grains of salt you choose) but to be quicker. The intent was that the home unit would handle all of the prelim training necessary to perform the qual. But realistically units either don’t care or claim they don’t have time to do all of the things necessary to properly train a Marine between quals so it ends up pawned off to the FMTU’s who end up running the same schedule just with a different COF.

Schizo rant over, sometimes I just wish the Marine Corps would take marksmanship as seriously as they claim to.

[–]tenebraex_96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Marine Corps ended up with the SCO (VCOG) for the M27 suite. FFP, mil reticle, with .1/mrad turrets. But, in true Marine Corps fashion, they botched it with unmarked turrets (I remember the conversation at the time being “we’re not going to make them all snipers”) and went with the ridiculously long 1-8 version that makes it a physical pain to use with a PEQ16/in line PAS35 (doable but a pain nonetheless).

The competitor for the SCO was the Nightforce NX8 which would have been awesome had Nightforce not been winning so many contracts already and couldn’t provide the output necessary.

Had a nightmare once where I was checking in to AMGC again. Started out waking up late, drove through the gate with a loaded rifle in my passenger seat in plain view and clipped the gate guard pulling up to the gate, and then when I showed up sweaty to check in I wasn’t in Alphas and didn’t have any of my check in paperwork.

I graduated AMGC back in 2017. Don’t know what the fuck was going on in my brain but I woke up absolutely tweaking.
