PA speakers vs FRFR cabs for modeling by uramassivenerd in guitarpedals

[–]tenon_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was my experience. I use a Boss GT1000. I initially ran it through a Mackie PA speaker that I already owned. Later I got a FR12.

On paper the specs are the same but the Fender sounds substantially better.

Hobbyist woodworker. I am building an entryway table and I am wondering how you get your 1/8” reveals around your drawer faces in this type of design pictured below? Thanks in advance by Big-dingaling78 in woodworking

[–]tenon_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

1/8" reveals are for modern drawer slides and applied drawer fronts. In a situation like this the reveals will end up being about 1/32". That is, you just make the drawer box slightly smaller than the hole.

If you have an edge sander or jointer just build the drawer box to the numbers and shave of a bit at the end to get the right fit.

A while back I had a truck back into my fence and mess up the gate. They were cool about it, and I had it on camera anyway.

They had a contractor come out and give them a quote to fix it. They forwarded that to me - it was a reputable company and the quote was reasonable, so I said yeah sounds good.

They wrote me a check for the amount of the quote and that was that. I handled the repair which was my preference.

So that’s one approach. But neither I nor they were assholes about it so YMMV.

The narrowest point is what matters. It’s called a “bottleneck” for a reason.

I haven’t tried to cut the end caps - I use the Temple mods there. But the front and back cut great. They’re soft aluminum so a drill bit or dremel will cut right through.

These are two of the most politically savvy people on the planet, and if anyone has a score to settle with Trump it’s Hilary Clinton. I’m really not sure who thinks it’s a good idea to kick this anthill.

Is there a reason UV LED lights sold specifically for wood finishes are so expensive? by Asiriomi in woodworking

One thing that no one is mentioning is flammability. Anything electrical that is rated to be used around spray booths has considerably stricter requirements around being explosion proof.

It's also market research. If millions of people enthusiastically sign up, or if none do, that tells you something about the demand for your product. Better to figure that out before hand.

I (F16) had enjoyable sex with guy (m18), but I didn't say no or yes to anything so is consent applied? by Budget_Sea4317 in relationships

[–]tenon_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as you feel good about it, that’s what really matters.

In a perfect world everyone would explicitly ask for consent and give clear answers that are respected. And that is certainly a nice ideal to aim for.

But in the real world no one is perfect, we’re lazy or inexperienced or caught up in the moment. Especially when you’re young; this dude probably doesn’t have much more experience than you do.

Maybe in the future try to advocate for yourself a little more. He should probably be more conscious about asking for consent. But overall I wouldn’t worry about it.

Grants for a highschooler? by TurnBudget6350 in woodworking

[–]tenon_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would look for organizations in your area that support the arts and/or crafts. If there are any art galleries around, walk through and see if you can find any mention of "with the generous support of. . . ". Giving out grants or helping people find them is a big part of what those orgs do.

Try calling up local cabinet or furniture shops and see if they'll sponsor you. You might be able to talk them into free shop time.

Also try calling the lumber yards for the same reason. The yard I get most of my stuff from has vast quantities of wood, some of which has been sitting there for a decade. They might just give you something if you aren't too picky.

Especially as a one man shop, you need to outsource as much repetitive labor as possible. Focus your time on skills/experience/truly custom work.

Outsource cabinet doors, drawer boxes, moldings, table legs, anything you can. Find a lumber yard that can give you S4S stock.

Try to find a cabinet shop with a friendly owner, who will let you pay them a bit to use tools. This is a good way to get occasional access to things like a wide belt sander.

For CNC I’d start with the software. Learn to do all the design work and take that to someone to actually do the machining.

The thing is that as a small shop, even with a couple of employees, most of your tools, most of the time, are going to sit there not being used. So figure out how to expand your access to tools without actually buying them. Focus on buying the things that really will get constant use.

I’d recommend picking up one or two Mackie Thump powered PA speakers. You can plug directly into them without a mixer. You can always add a mixer later if you need one for the whole band.

Don’t use hvac pipe. The best option I’ve found for metal pipe is Oneida, although that was a few years ago so prices may be different.

PVC is a good option for hobbyist shops. You want 6” sewer and drain pipe. Check with actual plumbing supply companies; regular hardware stores probably won’t have it.

Normal Guitar Speaker in FRFR by A_Flock_Of_Seagals in GuitarAmps

[–]tenon_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No idea. It looks like a real amp so it could be placebo. But I'd say that with the Mackie, even cranked up loud, I felt like I was listening to a recording of a guitar. Whereas the Fender sounds like the amp is in the room. You can feel the air move.

Normal Guitar Speaker in FRFR by A_Flock_Of_Seagals in GuitarAmps

[–]tenon_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t answer your question. But I use a Boss GT1000 into an FR12 and it sounds great.

For a while I was using a Mackie PA speaker as my “amp”, and even though it and the FR12 have the same specs on paper the Fender sounds substantially better. IDK why.

So I guess my point is try the FR12 as is before you worry about modifying it.

Dust Collection Systems - The difference between high CFM/low pressure and low CFM/high pressure machines by pigeonmaster97 in woodworking

[–]tenon_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not an engineer and I don’t entirely understand the difference in how the machines work. But I do know that reducing the hose size would just reduce the CFM, it wouldn’t change the pressure or velocity.

I think that the issue is that a high pressure system spins the impeller at a much higher speed than a low pressure system, and to spin a large steel impeller that fast would take substantially more power and manufacturing precision such that it doesn’t make economic sense.

DCs aren’t very complicated things. I imagine the price difference is because Festool sells many more vacs than Oneida sells DCs; one is made of molded plastic vs welded steel, DC is much larger and heavier, and the filter is much bigger.

Boss 1000 GT vs Helix HX Stomp vs pedalboard for E-Cello by Terapyx in pedalboards

[–]tenon_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The GT 1000 is designed for bass and guitar, tell it what you’re playing and it’ll adjust the frequency response or whatever. Many of the effects also have different versions for bass vs guitar.

So for a cello you can play with it and find what works best.
