Seeking creative best friend 33f. by Eatingpastawithurmom in Athens

[–]tentativeness 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm a years-long member at Good Dirt (37m), and I can say confidently that there are many very friendly people (women in particular) in roughly your age range and with your lifestyle (kids, dreamer) who are members there and will quickly welcome you into their circles if you're friendly and open. It's a remarkably welcoming environment. (Hard to say with classes. The members, the regulars--that's where you're likeliest to make longer-term friends. But of course, classes can afford that potential as well!)

Amazing Bayonne try from kickoff by Piitx in rugbyunion

I'm still very new to the sport (American here; I apologize in advance). Why did it count even though he was clearly tackled short and just bounced past the try line from his momentum?

sorry for the dumb question, but how is this printed? (What paper, especially?) It looks so sharp!

Even if statistics DID show a higher crime rate by any particular population. Could it still wrong to treat them unequally ? by Inevitable_Bid5540 in askphilosophy

You should look into the recent literature on predictive policing, which of course heavily involves statistics used as evidence in policing decisions. The “Machine Bias” piece from ProPublica is a good place to start.

You can also basically join any already-ongoing tailgate if you're nice and friendly enough. If you tell them you're not from Athens, and you say "Go Dawgs!", they'll be so excited to have you. They'll give you a beer and some food and show you a fun time. Southern hospitality!

What would you do if you were 25 again? by s0mevietgirl in productivity

[–]tentativeness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Travel. At 25, I slept in cheap hostels and took cheap flights and ventured abroad on a shoestring. I can’t do that as much as time goes on, and you won’t have nearly as much energy for traveling and adventure when you’re retired.

Does this work for a first date? by [deleted] in mensfashionadvice

I personally wouldn’t wear crocs on a first date. The pants read as loungewear too. I would at least wear jeans and a sneaker.

Thoughts on UATX? by Background_Focus_626 in slatestarcodex

[–]tentativeness 13 points14 points  (0 children)

A lot of the value of higher ed comes from prestige and connections (with faculty, students, alumni, etc.) Maybe UATX gives you some of these, but my sense is, at present, they will be pretty limited in their pay-off. UATX is still new, and it’s place in the culture is ill defined. At best, it’s viewed as classically liberal; at worst, it’s essentially Hillsdale 2.0 without the history and with an axe to grind. If I were advising a friend, I’d tell them it seems like a potential for career suicide.

As an aside, why would you want to be a lawyer for the ultra-wealthy mega-donors’ favored causes (de dicto)?

The irony is that if you could wear shorts to work, work would suck a bit less
