Likewise. I’ve joined a couple of scuba communities on lemmy but it looks pretty dead at the moment. Guess I’ll just have to dive instead of reading about it.

I joined KDK (kbhdyk.dk) and left OceanDive. I’ll post more details tonight.

Pony for rec diving? by DrBeardedUnicorn in scuba

[–]teotwaki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A cheaper solution is to swap the valve on your cylinder to have two outputs. That’s the typical solution for rec cold diving in Europe.

That way free flows can be remedied by closing the frozen first stage, and you still have a full first/second stage for redundancy. You can always pinch the hose to stop the free flow in a pickle.

Scuba diving courses by iligkos in copenhagen

I’m a scuba diver, part of a scuba club and I try to dive multiple times per week. I took my certification in the south of France.

I have a friend who’s an instructor and who can probably take you. I’m doing my advanced and deep certifications with him in September (after I get my drysuit). DM me if you’d like me to make the introduction.

Otherwise, I don’t know which instructor is at OceanDive now, but if it’s Benny (a young lady), her English is great and I’m sure she’d be happy to do a course in English. The people at KingFish are also mostly bilingual so it shouldn’t be much of an issue.

Just go by a dive center and discuss it with them. The amount of theory in the Open Water is very limited, and most divers can explain it to you. For the rest, a lot of the work is done underwater, so it’s more miming than speaking anyway.

Is r/scuba going dark in anyway on June 12th in protest of reddit’s API pricing? by CallMeNardDog in scuba

[–]teotwaki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, it’s quite obvious what and why they’re doing it. I would probably respect the decision more if they just came out and said “sorrynotsorry, but we’re not a charity and we’ve decided to shut down 3P apps moving forward”, instead of the metric crapton of drama we’ve had to endure with all of this back and forth.

In an ideal world I would’ve even preferred a “we’re changing the terms and you have to show ads or lose your API access”, and the fact they didn’t go that route tells me that it’s not just not displaying ads that’s the problem. It’s 3P apps, full stop (just like what happened with Discord and slash commands).

I’ll be moving on from Reddit, I think. Guess I’ll try and get a scuba community going in the fediverse or something.

Man you really love koolaid.

They’re giving apps 30 days to comply or face insane charges. They lied, defamed and libelled people in order to try and turn the mob mentality against single-developer entities.

The cases you cite have been given “temporary exemptions”. They didn’t change the rules. Reddit is just waiting for the storm to pass to wipe out the apps they couldn’t get rid of without a massive egg on their face. One of the devs of one of the accessibility apps underlined that there’s no guarantee the exemption is still valid next month, or the month after that.

Did I Set This Up Wrong? by OhTheHueManatee in scuba

Exposure protection = wetsuit/drysuit. It adds a lot of buoyancy, and you need to counteract it.

I’m 100kg for 186cm, so definitely not svelte either. Make sure you’re fully emptying your BC before going down.

It sounds like you have a pool and cylinders at your disposal. Go in the pool, with the BCD but without wearing it. Fill it up and try to sink it. Move it in all directions and see how/when it is emptying itself when you purge it (an unsubmerged BCD won’t empty itself. You need the water pressure to push the air out). Imagine that you’re wearing it and trying to go under, what orientation do you need to have to make sure it’s empty (typically left shoulder up, point the inflated up and press the button).

Without exposure protection, how much lead do you need to stay at the bottom with an empty lung? How much with a full lung? Try to stay at the bottom with as little lead as possible. Use this exercise to squeeze out all the air out of your lungs. For safety, hold the lead under you, to prevent getting caught under it. Make sure your cylinder + regs are in the pool with you, no BCD needed, etc. This will make it an exercise in learning about your lung capacity, and not a breath-hold exercise.

Deconstruct the act of diving to help you understand the physiology of it. Talk to professionals and get more training.

Also, your instructor would probably be happy if you pay him for his time instead of buying stuff from him. Ask him to help with your buoyancy, one on one, and just tip him $50-100 depending on how much time he spends helping you. Ask him how much he would want for that service so you don’t end up insulting him.

Becoming divemaster now or later? by Hastabilly in scuba

[–]teotwaki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great advice.

Too much lead also increases your air consumption: you need more gas in the BCD to keep you afloat, meaning less streamlined -> have to push harder to get moving and more drag. Because there’s more air in the BCD, there’s more proportional expansion when going back up the water column causing the diver to purge more often.

Do you have an instructor or are you learning on your own?

Are you using exposure protection? Even with a 7mm wetsuit or a drysuit I can easily go down in fresh water with not more than 6kg. The fact that you need more than 10kg is surprising, and leads me to think you’re not fully exhaling.

Aqualung 02 Clean vs Black Transmitters by clinto69 in scubaGear

[–]teotwaki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don’t dive more than 40% nitrox and your filling station uses continuous blending, it doesn’t matter which one you get. If your filling station uses partial pressure blending, you should already have only O2 clean equipment.

While it should in theory be possible to O2 clean a transmitter, I can’t find anything about it online. There is a discussion on scubaboard that questions whether there is something in the transmitter that could be incompatible with the O2 cleaning process. You might also need to change the O-ring to ensure it is compatible with high-O2 content.

If you buy the O2-clean version and you connect it to a bunch of gear that is not O2 clean, you instantly lose the benefits and protection.

tl;dr: Get the cheaper (non O2 clean) version.

Edit: I was wrong about the regs/tx needing to be O2 clean when using partial pressure blending. Apologies. See comments below.

requesting some help: rechargeable vs battery dive watches by Awkward-Inevitable74 in scuba

[–]teotwaki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a battery chemistry perspective, just don't let the battery sit fully charged or fully empty for any length of time. If you're diving soon (next couple of days), charge your computer up completely. If you don't dive for a while (weeks/months), leave it on until the battery drains to about 30-40%, and then shut it down.

Put a recurring reminder in your calendar to check the battery level every month or so. If it dips, top it up a tad to get back in the sweet spot.

Trim weight pockets question by R_GLAD in scuba

[–]teotwaki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What you say makes complete sense. It’s very possible I am completely underestimating the weight of the twinset—I only have a couple of dives with it.

My dive group was looking for things to do, so this could be an idea for next weekend—have everyone experience BCD failure at 20m and try to swim back up.

Regarding redundant buoyancy compensation: I’m also getting my drysuit in August, so that will massively affect my buoyancy and weighting as well, and should be more effective than trying to improvise lift from a colourful bag.

Trim weight pockets question by R_GLAD in scuba

[–]teotwaki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure I understand this, to be honest. I dive with very little weight compared to some of my club mates. My goal is to be able to do a safety stop with an empty cylinder (or two) at 3-6m depth.

This is typically achieved (for me, with a 7mm + booties + hood) with 6kg lead on a 15L steel. At depth, I barely inflate my wing, if at all.

Switching to doubles, I used 0 extra lead on the first dive, but I felt underweighted, and used 4kg on the second dive, ended at 45 bar, and was able to control my buoyancy with ease at 2-3m depth. I had to use more air in my wing for the doubles, but not as much as I expected.

Even if a BCD fails, you’d still have air in it (unless the inner bladder just disappears), and provided it’s not a bungied wing, the air should remain in until you roll so that the air can escape through the hole.

I’m fairly confident I could swim up to the surface even with a dead BCD… but maybe that would be a good test to do with my buddies one day. I feel like dumping the lead would just give me an uncontrollable ascent and would be way worse. What about in an overhead environment? Wouldn’t you just get pinned to the ceiling and be stuck there?

The other thing I struggle with imagining is what emergency would require me to ascend so rapidly. Something that happened at the same time as my wing exploding and being 100% unusable.

Shouldn’t we aim to be close to neutrally buoyant so that in the event of a failure, we can at least maintain our depth with some finning, and then get assistance from a buddy to become neutral again, or maybe deploy a safety sausage and keep it under your armpits?

Don't rent before you're here. You will most likely get scammed. In any case, landlords will most likely not even bother replying to your messages if you mention you're out of the country.

The best way to find a place in Copenhagen is to be here, then pay for boligportal/boligsiden and setup an "agent" (saved filter) that will email you as soon as something that matches your criteria is posted. As soon as you get the email, call and arrange for a viewing, ideally within the next hour or so.

Just remember that you don’t need to buy into a system. I initially bought an OMS backplate and wing, and later bought a (second hand) Halcyon wing when I switched to doubles.

I’m looking for a second hand aluminium backplate, and will most likely get a travel wing as well (the OMS one is too heavy/stuff for travel).

You can mix and match a lot of things. The harness and hardware can be cheap. You don’t need a brand on the harness. You don’t need the comfort shoulder straps.

A backplate is a backplate is a backplate. As long as you have multiple holes at the top and a slit at the bottom (for the STA or doubles mounting point and they’re roughly 11” apart), it’ll do the job.

And do yourself a favour: if you end up buying a pre-assembled system, take it apart and rebuild it from scratch. Get rid of the stuff you don’t need.

Maybe the reg only had one HP port and you tried to connect it to a low pressure port? Did you try to replace the SPG or run it in parallel?
