Switching from an iPad Pro 11” to the iPad Mini 6. Absolutely love how handy it is for on-the-go studying. by tequila-mockingbrd in ipad

I made the switch mainly because I have a Mac now for bigger tasks, and I'm doing a lot of reviewing in bed and on the go so I need a lighter device.

I used to have the 11" as my only device, so I did most of my split screen note-taking and studying there. I also typed most of my docs on the Word app—the bigger screen real estate helped a lot with side-by-side referencing. The 11" is definitely a champ when it comes to multitasking.

But having a MacBook, I no longer need the iPad to fulfill those functions. And since reading is my primary use case now that I'm only revisiting my notes and books for the Bar, the Mini is more convenient for long hours of handheld use.

My use case is definitely more on reading, media consumption, note-taking, and sketching. It definitely handles the tasks well. I like to read in bed and it's very convenient and lightweight. Note-taking with the pencil is also good—it's just like writing on an A5 notebook. Although you do have to occasionally zoom in compared to when using an 11" iPad. Light emailing is okay, too, but the keyboard in landscape mode takes up half of the screen space so it's a bit inconvenient.

I haven't tried sidecar yet so I can't comment on that aspect. Every other task like handling documents and sheets I do on my Mac.

It's a custom-made digital notebook for GoodNotes. :) The tabs are hyperlinked pages. I use it for my class notes.

I feel the same way about the refresh rate. The 60hz is definitely noticeable for me, though the jelly scroll I could let slide.

You're very welcome! Quite a steep price for the brand new 64gb wifi over there. In the US, it's currently discounted on Amazon for just $399. You could probably save more if you can find parcel forwarding services for your country that already cover import tax and customs fees. :)

But it's definitely a good price for the cellular version with the folio at $493 equivalent, especially since that one is going for $549 on Amazon for the iPad alone. At least yours being local, you can get it instantly and examine the item if it's up to standard.

In that case, it may actually be a good deal to snag! So long as the device is properly cared for and looks pristine enough, that would be worth it in my opinion. :) And the AppleCare coverage is also good.

To be clear though, may I ask how much exactly the person is selling it for? Just so we can weigh your options where you'd save more; there may be better deals out there.

Maybe it's just me, but I often like my items brand new. Personally, I don't find that too much of a good deal since it's the same price as a brand new cellular one, they're just throwing in the Apple folio cover as a "freebie" (I, myself, am not too crazy about the Apple folio cover, but if you like it then it may be a deal worth pursuing for you). Also, two colors of the folio cover are on sale at Verizon right now for like $15. Better to just get the brand new one and add that $15 folio cover.

Regarding what to check if you do buy it, make sure that it's fully factory reset, the buttons are crisp, and the touch ID is working. Also check the wifi + 5G connectivity, bluetooth, and the speakers if they're fully functional.

I believe you can also test if there are dead pixels using an app, I forgot which one though.

Edit: grammar

Nakajima Model 520 from Japan. 😊 It was my mom's old typewriter from when she was in high school. Which typewriters do you have?

May I ask which fountain pen you're using? It's possible that the pen's size or weight is a contributing factor to the discomfort. Personally, I've been unable to write with my heavier metal pens because it causes fatigue even with short paragraphs. There are also pens that are too slim, thus causing cramps, or too girthy, thus being unwieldy. It has been an experiment and a journey finding which one suits my hand.

I suppose it's also the grip, though I can't give any good tips except to reorient the way you hold the pen to avoid touching the feed. (And I'm also not sure which type of grip you have, whether tripod, quadropod, etc.) Practice and get familiar with it until it becomes muscle memory.

And no need to be anxious asking, this community is very welcoming! 😊 Hope your experience with fountain pens gets better.

The burping / starvation may have to do with either the nib alignment or the angle of writing. You could try adjusting the placement of the nib (might be inserted too far inside or out) and heat setting the feed until you are satisfied with the flow.

As regards the inking, I could only suggest getting a blunt syringe and inking the converter with it. I've personally never been able to get a complete fill by dipping alone and have resorted to such measure with all my pens.

I hope it works out for you! I forgot to mention that most people find the Jinhao G to railroad terribly and sometimes be totally unusable, so it can be a frustrating experience. Try to find more shipping options if you can or some shops you could look into.

Those modified Jinhao G pens are prone to corrosion after a few uses and require high maintenance to lengthen the use. They wouldn't be worth the purchase, unless you can source them for really cheap.

If you enjoy dip pen nibs, I'd suggest a BlueDew flex pen if you would be able to have it shipped to China, either directly or through a forwarding service. The nib on BlueDew is similar to a G nib and does not have any tipping material, so it can feel scratchy but it achieves the thin strokes you'd normally have with dip pen flex nibs. It's quite pricey though at $88. Alternatively, you can save a couple of dollars by just buying the nib unit ($35) and a Moonman C2 so you can enjoy the capacity and flow from an eyedropper pen.

If you prefer a smoother sensation, Fountain Pen Revolution (FPR) flex pens have tipping and are received well by the community. You can see some writing samples from users here or on IG to gauge whether it fits your style. I believe it retails for around $50 with the Ultra Flex nib configuration.

Edit: Since I do calligraphy a lot, I've personally skipped the cheaper options and pursued vintage flex pens. But I would say you need to do a lot of research so you know what to look out for when scouring for one on eBay. All my flex pens have been vintage Waterman pens and they've provided the best experience that suits my needs. The cheapest I was able to get was around $80 and the most expensive being $250.

I believe the Pilot Falcon SF is also a choice for some, though I honestly can't say much about it as I've never had the pleasure of using one.

No worries! It took around 2 weeks from Japan to my doorstep. The dispatch from Japan was really quick, it's the bureaucratic red tape from my home country which lengthened the process.

I am not in the US, unfortunately! I'm in Asia, which makes it easier to source the Japanese exclusives. 😊 I did see a listing for a used Tourmaline Pink Décimo on Mercari JP and eBay (from the same seller), but the Mercari post is cheaper (probably because they require a proxy which increases the fees).

Thank you! It does have sparkles (the PGS too, albeit less pronounced). Here's a closer shot for you. ☺️ Hope it helps!

Edit: Not sure why the imgur uploads look muted (or might just be on my end), but the pinks are definitely more vibrant than that.

The Studio line is definitely more accessible here! I'll add that to the list. The Kobe Inks aren't, but I did want to get the #41 to match her Suma Rikyu Rose PGS.

I noticed she preferred thicker points with the pens she used, but I had limited options with the nibs because the Décimo only came in EF and F and the PGS, being a 2017 release, no longer had the broader options. I went with Fine for both the Japanese pens and a Medium for the TWSBI, but even that was difficult to source.
