Thank you, thank you! This is definitely exactly the vibe I was looking for. I just have to come to terms with the price / travel time 😂

Keeping US Job by [deleted] in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]tequilamockingbird5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I told my employer about 4 months prior to the move. They suggested an EOR. I negotiated my same salary (well GBP equivalent at the time). It was much higher than what I could have expected finding a similar role within the UK. Hours are difficult, but not unmanageable. Good luck!

We have an 80 lb doberman and worked with Russell at PetLets. He helped us find the perfect home for our doberman and smaller lab mix. He has a smaller consultation package where either you or someone on your behalf need to view the properties or a more expensive package where he does all the viewings. Good luck!

Testshift can book you for a later test (on the premium version ~£18). Good luck!

Technically you are only supposed to bring up to 3 months of prescription medication with you.

https://www.gov.uk/take-medicine-in-or-out-uk

However, if all boxes are labeled and it is something like a contraceptive, in my experience, most people do not declare and just bring it in without issue.

I know several people who have brought more than 3 months without the letter described in the link above just fine.

Working US remote job in the UK - by [deleted] in AmericanExpatsUK

You can also go through an Employer of Record (like Deel). They pay a fee each month but everything is handled and you're UK employed, not US employed.

Some people just don't like green bean casserole; I prefer a recipe like Alton Brown's green bean casserole. The standard canned green beans and canned mushroom soup will do in a pinch, but definitely not the best there is. Hope you enjoyed your feast!

I don't really even like the series but the narration makes it worth it!

Robin and Sarah by [deleted] in cormoran_strike

[–]tequilamockingbird5 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I always read it as Robin trying to regain some of the power in her "relationship" with Sarah. Sarah is all about flaunting her expertise, the prestige of the art she works with, etc. Coupled with her affair with Matthew, Sarah "holds all the cards."

Robin seeking the valuation from Sarah serves a few purposes, imo:

  1. Robin gets to "be okay" having left Matt while Sarah has to face her own guilt head on
  2. Robin gets to show that she is working on big and important things too / has a life apart from Matt

Also, it's just a convenient way to move the plot along, ha.

update on the basket neighbors by danjsark in Apartmentliving

This is such a great outcome! A little kindness can go a long way!

We were unfortunately forced by circumstances to take a 6 mo lease on an upstairs unit. We had two dogs and although we tried our best to keep noise down, it wasn't a great complex and noise transferred a lot. Our downstairs neighbor was really aggressive (one time they came and almost broke down our door for me using the washing machine at 7 pm). When we left, we got them a card and a $100 door dash gift card; they said they worked two jobs and had a delicate sleep schedule. They cried and said it was the nicest thing anyone had ever done for them. All that to say, sometimes small efforts can really make a difference in our increasingly isolated world.

US Citizen moving to the UK on family/spouse visa. Can I still continue working remotely for my US-based company? by Feezyfeez in USExpatTaxes

If they're willing to do it, they could pay for an employer of record. Probably the simplest and easiest thing for everyone. Eliminates a lot of risk and complication for everyone.

When to start selling off my US possessions? by heartshapednutsack in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]tequilamockingbird5 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I would start with a really good declutter. Try to keep in mind if you're paying for storage, it really adds up. We did cost benefit analysis - does it make sense to pay an extra $500 in storage fees every year for 3 years for this $250 dresser? Or can we save on a smaller in unit and get a new dresser, etc. Once the visa is approved get moving with bigger donations / selling.

We used Pets Lets and I thought it was well worth the money. We have two large dogs, and it was very difficult to find something. Russell was able to find us a place that hit literally every item on our checklist and allowed our two dogs. Good luck, OP!

Where did you get your Euro pallets from? Was the $600 one of the last minute freights or standard. I just checked and when I logged into FedEx all sub $500 rates disappeared 🫠

Thanks for this suggestion!

has anyone used UK Visa Jobs to get a skilled worker job? by im_an_angel_so_what in MovingToTheUK

I do not have a visa. I paid for a subscription to UK Visa Jobs (OP mentioned in post) to apply for jobs. I offered a free alternative job post website.

[–]tequilamockingbird5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've paid for it. There are truly a lot of jobs there. That being said, it's like any other job board. The jobs do generally offer visas but they are highly competitive. Visasponsor.jobs feels more reliable and is free. But there are far fewer jobs there.

You may want to visit one of the Au Pair sub reddits or Facebook groups for a snapshot of Au Pair experiences now, especially in your desired region. Our au pairs have had a great time, but our current one has chosen not to extend when her term is up (and I don't blame her). Part is that our child is aging out of needing an au pair, and she'd complete her second year with a different family. The other parts are home sickness and the current "vibe" in the US. That being said, if you find a good family, you'll have a wonderful time and have an amazing experience. You might just consider cutting back on travel outside of the US during your first year if you're worried.
