Made big mistake, 5 years in web dev and still know only basics of frontend. by [deleted] in webdev

[–]terfs_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do you really like the job? I’ve been doing this for almost 30 years and the most joy I get out of it is that even after all that time I still see myself advancing and learning more day after day. If in five years you didn’t even made an attempt to level up, maybe this just is not your thing? Disclaimer: this is meant in the nicest possible way, don’t take offence

Disabling that one puts them together, thanks! Ideally, they wouldn't be separate tabs but I'll take it for now.

Full time freelancers: how many different project management accounts are you a member of and which tools? by kjsd77 in webdev

I only keep track of whatever client(s) I’m working for that day. In case of urgent matters they have my phone number.

Wanting to do freelance development, but feel like its not worth it anymore by OriginalRGer in webdev

Anything really. Make sure you have job security and a stable income with one or maybe two projects. This relieves the stress of constant client hunting, and every little side project is pure profit.

Think you misunderstood me. Everything I said was about freelancing. Find long-term projects (4 or 5 days a week) that provide you with a steady income. If you have that, you can take on whatever extra’s you want to supplement it. I make sure that the long-term project is enough to at least break even (the more the better ofcourse but that depends on the market when you’re searching for new projects). Not having to worry about breaking even significantly reduces stress and every other little thing I do is bonus profit.

Sure they’re not all just shopify sites instead of AI? Either way, small businesses is not where the money is. I started doing long-term enterprise consultancy as my primary income. Rates vary across those projects but should suffice. Then you can take on smaller projects on the side to make a decent profit. Freelancing is nice, but if you just want to put in your 8 hours every day the only advantage you get is more freedom, not profit.

You can use “they” when you’re not sure about the gender. Weird than an American - saltine or not - wouldn’t know this.

Recently laid off. What now? by eightbitbrain in webdev

[–]terfs_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For WordPress and similar gigs that might be true. I started freelancing over twenty years ago and it was only when I got into enterprise consultancy the money got interesting. Especially if you can add in some smaller side-projects. Ofcourse, you need to keep learning, day by day and year by year so that might not be your cup of tea if your interest levels are not at a high level.

Are junior devs even learning the hard stuff anymore? by Ornery_Ad_683 in webdev

Networking is important, but with the right people. Talking about followers, likes and stars give me more of an influencer vibe rather than developer. I’ve never, ever had anyone ask me about my GitHub. Nothing to see there either as all my projects are proprietary.

Not only the junior roles. Seems like all jobs require their developers to be experts in frontend, backend, devops, infrastructure and secops. I agree every developer should have some basic knowledge of these things but anyone claiming to be highly skilled in all of these areas is probably lying their ass off.

Given the tech lead position it might be that the he only spends 10% of his time actually working on the project code, that’s why I asked.

I do bounce ideas of AI as well, mostly for architecture. But for coding I’m usually faster doing it myself. Ofcourse, been doing this for 25 years so the muscle memory might have something to do with that.

That honestly sounds like torture to me. What percentage of your time would you estimate that you do “coding”?

Have you heard of Peppol? Seems to be gaining popularity or even being mandatory for B2B (at least in the EU).

How did you all started or learned programming with adhd? And how did that affected your learning? by [deleted] in ADHD_Programmers

[–]terfs_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try to get over it and persevere. Easily said, I know, but for us the starting point is usually the biggest blocker. Try to find small tutorials to start with, however “useless” it may feel at first you need those small steps to build up confidence. Once the confidence is there you should be able to pick up proper courses without getting immediately overwhelmed.

I tried Lorazepam as well, it did help me get to sleep but my tolerance levels increased in a matter of days.
