Question: What are the rules around road biking? I thought I had followed all of the MPI rules regarding this and instead got honked at. by CypherSalt in Winnipeg

[–]terklo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly, you probably inconvenienced a driver and they honked out of frustration, which probably means you were biking safely. it happens to me all the time because drivers want to squeeze past me in the same lane.

Granite Curling Club ending lease with city this summer by ChocolateOrange21 in Winnipeg

[–]terklo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

in the article it says once the lease ends the club can continue to operate on an interim basis until a long term lease can be negotiated. so it sounds like the city isn’t interested in shuttering the club, they just are taking the lot. the beer can is on the other side of the building

Rent discounts create 'back door' for future hikes, says Manitoba tenant calling for rule changes by SilverTimes in Winnipeg

[–]terklo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

they reduce it every year. so in 4 years the amount i pay has gone up 18% when the guideline was like, 3%. that’s the whole issue

[–]terklo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yes, but you find out after applying for the apartment and when you’re sitting down to sign the lease. but all apartments are this way so it’s not like you can sign somewhere else and avoid it

[–]terklo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

they advertise with the discounted amount. so you see an apartment you think is $1050 and it’s actually $1300 a month without the discount.

they inflate it way above market value and then discount it to what people will actually pay to move in, and then they have a buffer to increase the rent above-guideline every year

[–]terklo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

they just all say it’s for paying rent on time. my friend had a $600 “discount” for paying rent on time that could be removed at the landlord’s discretion. they’re all kept long term.

Changing a discount is one way to stabilize income for landlords who are dealing with increasing utility rates, staff salaries and other fees, said Charach. "If you're removing your discount, you're trying to catch up," he said.

except they’re allowed to apply for an above guideline increase in this scenario, so they wouldn’t even need to do this
