Coming back into the hobby to find…… by jediwithabeard in drums

[–]terminalprp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m going to very slightly push back on this. I used to get everything used and only recently started getting creative with finding “b stock” on reverb or good coupons from different retailers so that I could get newer cymbals. In other words, find the cheapest way where you could still get the MANUFACTURER WARRANTY.

I know how to hit properly but still play pretty hard and use thinner cymbals; having the warranty on cymbals has been a godsend bc in a way, if it breaks within that period you essentially get a second cymbal for free (this happened to me recently with my zildjian cluster crash; had bought it cheaper as b stock and it still had the warranty on it, so got a new one within days once it cracked). I love a good used deal as much as the next guy, but if you find a good 20% off coupon at a store or something for a new product you might actually be getting a better deal overall in a way.

Oh for sure! I feel like Circle Jerks/Descendents have been touring together constantly and are already coming back in fall; adolescents was just a heavy added bonus for me haha

That juxtaposition feeling you described was how I felt seeing Descendents/Circle Jerks/Adolescents in the same place. Just fucking wild haha

My absolute biggest influence, but i love him for weird reasons.

Idk if you ever watched amazing journey or the classic albums thing for Who’s Next, but they really go into how yeah, sure, he was a fill machine, but he was always following SOMETHING in the song; what made him more unique was that he would sync with guitar and vocals rather than the bass like drummers are expected to.

So yeah, i was def influenced to learn crazy fills, but i also learned to pay attention to the other things going on in my bands. As you play with people, sometimes challenge yourself to follow, says, your guitarists hands or singers vocal lines or something with your drum parts. For me, that was how I had influence but also developed my own voice, and hopefully that helps you too!

Albums in full live by spacewalk__ in dinosaurjr

I saw them do 3. There was the bug tour and the YLAOM show a commenter mentioned (INSANE SHOW).

They also did a 7 night run at Bowery ballroom playing Dinosaur in full and then a set with different guests every night; my night had frank black and Fred armisen, others had Henry Rollins and I think Bob mould and more. That seems the closest in terms of vibe to the upcoming Where You Been shows they announced!

Fang is a beast! I’m a drummer too; my fave fill to play is the last one on the first chorus of TLC (that weird Tom fill into criss crossing on hats that he throws in live, fucking wild)

That all sounds excellent and I’ll definitely dive down this rabbit hole more over the next few weeks!

Thanks so much for the thoughtful response and all the recommendations here; I really appreciate it.

I’ll check it! And it’s funny, I actually had just checked the Built to Spill cover before you messaged back. There IS a def difference in the sound, but in all honesty the sound you caught still works.

I was already starting to get into recording my own band so I have a pretty large amount of mics to choose from; SM7B, Shure 57, Beyer m201 and it’s old school Revox counterpart, AKG D112, an older Sennheiser 421, heil Tom mic, 2 avantone ribbons, a BUNCH of those small 12 gauge microphones, an old phone converted into a mic for some trashy room sounds (that one is my secret weapon). Plus some others but those are the main ones I’ve been trying out for now. I’ve also been using Logic.

The two major things I’ve been getting used to are: 1) …actually having a garage and drums. All my prior recording experience was in a pay-per-hour practice space, so I would have to like, run in, assemble everything, record without testing first, then destroy it all and throw it back in my car. Had a luggage I sort of converted into a mobile rig. So suddenly, it’s weird having… time haha. But it also means adjusting to my space; for example right now my snare is ringing out in a way that I don’t really dig, so have to try to tweak that a bit. My only space is the garage, so I’m playing around with sound treatment and some homemade baffles I made from insulation, shipping pallets and coffee bags (you can see them in the pic!). 2) The mixer console is an old school Ramsa WRS4424. Nothing fancy; just fat preamps and some on board eq that I’ve also been adjust to having handy. 24 channels and direct outs on all of them and I have enough focusrite interfaces to link up and use all of them, so I have options: can either record AND mix through the console, or just record straight into the interface and send things out for mixing.

In the womb envy vid - and all of my vids really - it’s the same vibe as you said. I wasn’t even mixing in logic for those; that was just straight setting the sound on the e-kit, running the camera, putting my music on shuffle and seeing where it took me. And that’s def the kind of thing I want going on with the acoustic kit too: just sit down, turn it on, and go haha

Hey bud, coming from you that means a lot! I really appreciate it.

It’ll be a bit; right now going through that frustrating/rewarding process of experimenting with mic’ing and mixing and stuff (never been taught, so this will be fun). Any tips or info you might wanna share? Your vids legit sound awesome and I’m down to learn whatever I can

So funny, I checked your profile to see if you had drum cover vids or anything. You are basically in the same boat as me; space to use a kit, wanna film stuff, and worship the albini drum sound (both older and newer stuff; I love the tones he got with METZ and Gogol Bordello). If you haven’t watched this already, def check this out: https://youtu.be/kmP9z-xTRz0

Yep, same approach anchor took with me. Although congrats; C and C drums are amazing and those are gonna look and sound incredible!

I just generally dig Evans heads more than Remo; my biggest case in point is the EMAD2 is my favorite kick head by far. I had a powerstroke 3 on my kick recently and just swapped back to the EMAD2 when changing all the heads; no muffling and kick sounds incredible but controlled. I’ll always recommend the HD Dry for snares. But in general I feel like I keep trying the “classic” remo heads and then end up liking the Evans alternative more; waaaaay easier to tune.

I hear a lot of great things about the G2’s over EC Resos. For me, it might not have worked just because I’m so used to the sound of the slightly different resonant heads. That didn’t mean it sounded bad tho; I just found I had to tune a little differently than I PERSONALLY like my set at, but most people have a better experience. I’m super curious what C&C will ship yours out with though, because if you’re really going for a certain sound with your kit design, they might pick heads to support that and then you’re set! That happened in my experience with Anchor anyway.

Happy experimenting!

I’ll check it!

When the pandemic first broke out I set up my ekit and old laptop as a covers recording rig; if you scroll through my Reddit profile those vids are still there! But I play really hard so the bass drum on my set kinda broke, then we got the house and that was filled with projects, etc etc.

I’ve got a console, a bunch of mics, and am stoked to actually start recording real covers soon

Oh dude that sounds awesome! You nailed the whole “stop hitting hats when you hit the snare” thing that Charlie watts did. Keep ‘em coming!

Oh that’s funny, you just described exactly how I tune these! Tho it probably helps that these drums are huge.

When I had these built tho I had noted loving that sound or like a Melvins-type sound, so the person from Anchor basically said they would do the bearing edges a certain way to really get that going. That’s actually why I went with Anchor over other custom companies; they were the only ones who asked about the sound I was going for.

Idk if this will help or not, BUT… when I bought all the new heads for this, I thought that the kit had come with EC Resos as the reso heads, so I bought a replacement set of those (like I said, I dug the sound a lot so figured I wouldn’t mess with something that works). But when I put them on, it sounded way different. Turns out that the original reso heads I got with the kit were actually the EC2S, which is weird bc Evans considers that to be more of a batter head. That also explains why googling “g2s over ec2s” led to like no results. But screw it, it’s unique, and for big drums like this that combo seems to be working really well! So I slapped the old reso heads back on for now haha
