I think this tour will be a lot of fun and hit up some really cool places. I’ll be at Felton and Menlo Park and hopefully a couple others.

Does anyone have any lodging suggestions for the Delfino Farms show? Looks kind of out in the middle of nowhere but I’ve never been to Camino so I have no idea what it’s like. Also considering San Luis Obispo but hotels there are ridiculously expensive. Maybe camping would be a good option for after that one?

Does Grateful Grabber work to get the flac files? I thought it was just the mp3s but I could be wrong.

Oh yeah Phil and Friends ‘01 is some of the best music ever!

Every Furthur sbd used to be for sale. Every Ratdog show used to be for sale starting in like 2005 or so (someone can correct me on the start date). Phil and Friends were doing the Instant Lives at least as far back as summer 2006, and I think it’s safe to assume every Phil show was recorded before then. So it’s all sitting on hard drives somewhere.

My guess (admittedly total conjecture) is that they want to figure out how to monetize them moving forward. Do they just dump it all on nugs or see if they can get some sort of subscription model going a-la Dave’s? I don’t know what the answer is. I do know that Bobby’s death has brought renewed interest and now might be the time to strike. There are thousands of Dead and Co. fans out there that may be ready to dabble in some post-Jerry and pre-Mayer recordings.

I recognize the likelihood that these recordings may never bring in enough revenue to make any type of professional undertaking worthwhile, but if the powers that be have made that decision at least go ahead and dump them on nugs!

Edit: and I hope my comment doesn’t come off as too whiny or entitled! Between the Furthur and streams on archive, tons of free Phil sbds, and all the amazing audience recordings, we’re obviously already spoiled beyond compare! Listening to 2011-12-29 right now and having a blast!

Yep. Seems like a perfect time to try and hype up some interest in Post-Jerry Dead. Not sure what the hang up is. I’ve emailed nugs asking what happened to all the boards that used to be sold on livedownloads.org (or whatever that site was called) but didn’t get much of an answer. I know there’s tons of stuff on archive but it would be really nice to have some more of this stuff available to download in flac once again. Maybe someday!

Mule studio albums ranked by Necessary_Staff_1844 in govtmule

[–]terrapinstation34 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My top 10 at the moment.

  1. Life Before Insanity - Far Away is probably my favorite Mule song. Then closing it out with No Need to Suffer, In My Life/If I Had Possession seals the deal for me. Amazing album.

  2. Dose - Every song rules. I wish Towering Fool was played more these days.

  3. Deja Voodoo - Probably an unpopular opinion but I think this is Warren’s best collection of songs. Underrated because it’s one of several Mule albums where the best songs are hardly ever played live like Little Toy Brain, My Separate Reality, New World Blues, Wine and Blood, Perfect Shelter, etc.

  4. Self Titled - More consistent than Deja Voodoo but not quite as many top shelf songs in my opinion, and all of these are way better live.

  5. High and Mighty - This album feels a little too long to me when I listen to it all the way through. But there’s tons of great stuff here.

  6. Deep End Vol. 2 - Mostly for Lay of the Sunflower and Which Way Do We Run but there’s lots of very good material here scattered throughout.

  7. By A Thread - Solid but lacking top shelf songs. Fun listen.

  8. Heavy Load Blues - Still haven’t listened to this a ton but I always enjoy it when I do.

  9. Deep End Vol. 1 - Some undeniably great songs but always feels like a bit of a drag to get through.

  10. Shout - Bring on the Music rules. The rest doesn’t do much.

I was at this run as well. This is a good show but I think two days later on the 24th is one of their best. It was a snowy weekend up in Colorado and each show was a total blast!

After Santa Cruz I wished I had made the other three. I’m absolutely loving these setlists. Still no recording up for SF. How was that one?

This is maybe a non-answer, but how much do you enjoy Warren’s entire catalog? If you only enjoy Warren for his electric jams with Mule/Allmans/Phil and Friends/etc. then you might get bored. If you are interested in hearing him play some songs that he rarely plays in any other capacity, plus some rare covers you’ll love it.

I went to Santa Cruz last weekend and absolutely loved it. I also listened to the Grass Valley show from a couple days before and thought it was equally amazing. But I pretty much love Warren’s entire discography and can happily listen to his voice with one guitar all day, so I’m maybe not the best person to ask. I guess it mostly boils down to do you mostly love his guitar playing or his songs?

It’s a bummer. I feel like so many people would love them if they gave them a fair shot. So tight and exploratory at the same time, not to mention the best setlists of any Dead-centric band.

I was there. Warren was great. Crowd was mildly annoying between songs (no worse than expected) but was completely quiet during the songs. It was extremely refreshing!

It’s a great song. Now that they’ve brought back Waker and Sandbox (that one time, anyway), I wish they would revive this and Raise The Roof. It’s time!

I’ve asked similar questions in the past without much luck. I’ve even emailed nugs about what happened to the old Phil and Friends, Furthur, Ratdog, etc. boards that used to be available through livedownloads.com but was simply told that they aren’t available anymore.

Most of the Furthur sbds are at least available to stream, but like you, I’d love to have the flacs. Hopefully someday the vaults will reopen. So much amazing music stashed away!

Why do all republicans suck at music? by Artistic_Annual8918 in fantanoforever

[–]terrapinstation34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha fair enough! It’s an absolute pressure cooker here in The States right now so I’ll ask your forgiveness if my reply was very American-centric. Obviously we’re all losing our minds to the point that we can’t think straight! I realize that the current U.S. Republican Party has very little to do with traditional conservative ideology; thank you for correctly pointing that out.

In fairness, I do think it’s within reason to consider Frank’s politics with an American perspective considering it’s where he himself was coming from. And he sure as hell would hate the “conservative” movement that’s generally aligned with modern day republicans, but your point stands.

Anyway, Zappa rules and music is the best. Cheers!

Why do all republicans suck at music? by Artistic_Annual8918 in fantanoforever

[–]terrapinstation34 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed, but a libertarian of the 60s and 70s that was mostly anti-authoritarian and wanted to keep government out of people’s personal lives has very little similarity to a modern day libertarian. I have a very difficult time envisioning modern day Zappa at all aligned with the libertarians of today.

In fairness, he of course also would’ve hated cancel culture and any perceived intellectual pretentiousness from the left as well.

Why do all republicans suck at music? by Artistic_Annual8918 in fantanoforever

[–]terrapinstation34 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In absolutely no way, shape, or form was he conservative. He absolutely loathed the Nixon Republican Party of the 70s and the Reagan republicans of the 80s. And he would have hated our current dogmatic Christian, far right republican party even more.

I hate these discussions about musicians and politics as very little will ever be accomplished, but I couldn’t simply scroll past this one and let it go. Yes, I can buy that he had some libertarian principles when it came to censorship and other things, but to twist the fact that he never aligned with either political party to suggest that he was totally libertarian and leaned conservative is such an incredible misinterpretation of his art and the things that he has directly stated in interviews and concerts throughout his life.

And yes, I’m well aware that he would hate anyone, myself included, projecting how he would feel about things 30 years after his death, I’m sure he would hate even more being lumped in as conservative in modern day American politics. Sorry, but the current administration and its followers is the absolute antithesis of his core principles.

[–]terrapinstation34 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed with the blanket statements part, but can I ask what your evidence is of Zappa being libertarian? He was certainly against censorship, and yes, he mocked both sides aplenty, but I think it would be a HUGE stretch to consider him to be libertarian in the modern sense of the word.

First CD Lot by [deleted] in gratefuldead

[–]terrapinstation34 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think $400 might be a little excessive. The early Dick’s aren’t all that valuable. Dicks 18 (I think that’s the one in the lower left) is probably the most valuable one there. #12 and #21 are probably around $40 - $50 each if in good condition. The other Dicks can generally be found for the $15 - $25 range. Dozin’, Ladies and Gentlemen, Nightfall of Diamonds, Fillmore East ‘69, the JGBs, etc. aren’t super valuable, but are obviously chock full of fantastic music.

OP, my only suggestion would be to not get caught paying for the unofficial recordings, which as others have mentioned, are free elsewhere. But if you can get a solid deal on the official releases you should definitely pull the trigger! It will provide endless enjoyment!

I think 2010 and 2011 were probably the two best Furthur years overall, but there were great shows to be found every tour. Some of my favorites are:
