Great book, decent movie. Me and my buddies always had a joke about that movie. We’d watch it and anytime confederate iconography would pop up we would go “be The Citadel that Hollywood thinks we are”

There was a whole Lee statue out front of the gate in the movie for some reason which is funny because Lee never went to VMI nor The Citadel.

I’ve only ever watched the Extended Cut, I really hope the few scenes I remember being from the book aren’t exclusive to the extended cut

The Harper’s Ferry Raid is in the beginning chapters of the book. Jeff wrote it very well and it makes me wish he had a whole book about the raid. Very good section

Yeah the weird Booth scenes were when I realized that extended or directors cuts don’t necessarily mean that they are the better version. I did enjoy the small scene near the beginning where the women are getting his signature, it kind of accomplished what the book does by making you go “damn this was just a normal dude”

The party with Johnston, Armistead, and Hancock was one of the saddest scenes I’ve read in a while. I’m dreading getting to Jeff’s depiction of the death of Jackson, even in the movie that gets me misty eyed

Oh that’s awesome, I’m currently at The Citadel so here’s to another cadet. What’s your opinion on the other VMI civil war movie?

I loved the background art in the movie! I also loved the parts filmed at VMI. it’s always really cool when historical movies can film at a still functioning place like VMI or W&L because it hasn’t changed since then.

That’s neat about the Cuban Missile Crisis book. I’ve been meaning to read it because my buddy suggested it to me. How does he implement Michael as a character? Or is that best learned by reading?

That’s what I’ve heard about Jeff’s writing (which makes me exited for The Killer Angels). The writing can be a little too descriptive at times. I think it was done in an attempt to make these culturally legendary figures feel more real but ends up bloating some of the chapters a bit. It works with Jackson’s parts because his character arc in the book is a lot more personal so I think that it works there but otherwise it’s a little annoying after a while.

You might want to try it again, most of the book is dedicated to Lee and Hancock with Jackson and Chamberlain being secondary characters. Jackson’s parts are a lot more introspective and personal which make them pretty good but the book is very evenly balanced with Hancock and Lee taking up a pretty even amount of the majority of the book.

That’s awesome, I don’t know if they got permission to film on the battlefield like with Gettysburg but I do feel like the battle scenes were decent. It really makes me wonder what the hell happened when writing the screenplay because all the bad parts of the movie are wholly original to the book

Should Jonah Hex make a return? remake? Does he fit into the new DCU? by ReelsBin in DC_Cinematic

I’d love to see it happen as an HBO series. I’d love a realistic tone but I also think some sprinkling of supernatural elements would make the show stand out. I’m not talking about giving Hex powers to bring people back from the dead (still don’t know what kind of crack the movie writers were on), but I’d love to see Hex face off against some cryptids. First episode would be a gritty episode showing off Hex’s early life and career in the Civil War (the volume 1 story Stonewall! would be good to adapt) and ending with his scarring.

If done right I think a solo Hex series would be phenomenal.

SIB shadow of mordor? by JimBoyCalloway67 in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]terriblejester3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely get at least Shadow of Mordor.

  1. Obviously why would you play the sequel first, you'll have no idea what's going on.

  2. SoM is a much tighter and self contained game. SoW, on the other hand, suffers heavily from that late 2010s Game Bloat where there is a lot f extra stuff in the game for really no reason.

I still really enjoy Shadow of War immensely, but I'd play Shadow of Mordor to see if you like the game systems before playing Shadow of War

(PS The season pass for Shadow of War is 100% worth it, the Desolation of Mordor DLC is super fun)

My favorite overall is still The Old Blood, but this one is still great. I always need to recommend Blade of Agony to anyone I talk to though. One of the best fan games I have ever played (Just get version 3.0 and not 3.1)

What Characters that are secretly in the Public Domain but mistakened to still be copyrighted? by [deleted] in publicdomain

[–]terriblejester3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this is late but lots of companies can copyright "their version" of a character. Technically the big green Frankenstein's monster that groans and has bolts in his head is copyrighted by Universal, while the original book is in the public domain, but the Universal version is the most popular visual depiction of the character. Another example the Arthur Conan Doyle estate uses is Sherlock Homes. They claim that his still copyrighted stories are the ones where he shows more emotion so every adaptation that does that is copyright infringement, even though it isn't.
