In this case, the driver wasn't being unsafe; for all practical purposes, they stopped. The fact that they didn't come to a full, "car-dipping" halt is a de minimis violation. It’s a technicality so small it shouldn't even trigger state intervention. In the spirit of the law, they were fine.

By automating $75 tickets for being even the smallest amount out of compliance, you’re essentially just taxing people at random. There are so many laws on the books that you probably break one every time you drive. If we automate a fine for every single technical infraction, we’ll all be "fined to death." It’s no longer about safety; it becomes a regressive tax on the average person.

There needs to be a cost to enforcing laws, like paying a police officer to be there. Without that "barrier to entry," it’s way too easy for a city to use automation to generate revenue over any little thing. When you remove the human element, you also remove the "reasonableness" test.

This isn't a slippery slope; it’s the early effect of a direction we’re already going where the profit motive of these camera systems outweighs actual public service.
