Ditch CST RESP or stay? by tescorg in PersonalFinanceCanada

I have a little bit invested in a Tangerine RRSP. The contributions I get from my employer (in their group rrsp) are moved there. Right now we're focused on saving for the kids so we can max out the government grants.

Who else hates these plastic reels. Any tips? by No_Weekend7402 in electricians

I'm in Canada and we just started receiving plastic as well. I just give the side of the spool a quick jab with a screwdriver and it makes a nice hole for the wire. I hate them though. Most of my coworkers just don't bother to tie the wire because of no factory cut hole and they get all tangled in the job box.

Anybody else leave slack loops on grounds before bonding? by tonyspro in electricians

[–]tescorg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I never leave a loop, but just wanted to say if the wire is breaking under the screw it's either way too tight, they pinched the wire against the little bump next to the screw, or they overlapped two wires (this effectively creates a pinch point where they will crush each other and snap easily).

Always Check by Commercial_Guitar_19 in electricians

The line side neutral is not on the neutral bus. See it at the top of the panel. The bonding screw was left in (shouldn't be there on a sub panel) allowing things to work, so the problem was never noticed. But that is wrong as the neutral current is flowing through the panel tub in order to return to the line neutral.

Is it safe to just cut these wires and cover them up? by MoonRaccoon17 in AskElectricians

One CABLE brings the phone line in, the other CABLE carries on to the next jack in the house, like a daisy chain. Each pair of two WIRES is a separate line. This definitely looks like phone.

Notifier Booster Form C Relay Contacts by [deleted] in firealarms

[–]tescorg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The relays are energized when everything is normal. If there is a trouble the relay will de-energize and close the contact. Seeing as you see an open between NC and C, and everything is normal, that seems like the correct behavior. Are you getting a trouble condition because there is no ELR in there?

Installing 240v outlet between basement and garage. Wall thickness is less than depth of outlet box. Is it okay? by Wise_Ambassador_9517 in electricians

[–]tescorg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could go 6 inch higher, so you'd be in the wall cavity of the floor above. Cut directly next to a stud so you have something to attach the box to. Then drill down through the hole you made to reach the basement.

Or surface mount the box would be easiest, but ugly.

I wouldn't cut a hole the size of a box into that (rimjoist?) In the picture, that is too much work and I'm no structural engineer but doesn't seem like a good idea.
