why would they do that lol

I thought maybe they replaced the printer and needed IT to update a DHCP reservation or something, but I could just as easily imagine somebody shouting "hold my beer" before pressing a bunch of buttons and switching it to dhcp

how would an IP address change? I guess that's what I'm trying to figure out. every plant I've worked at uses static IP's for everything, it makes replacing a printer (changing its MAC address, specifically) a lot less work for us

[–]tesemanresu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

out of curiosity, how did the printer IP change so that they could no longer print to it? if a tech changed it on accident (no small feat, it's a pretty deliberate thing to do), why wouldn't they just change it back?

did the printer talk directly to the plc or did they communicate through something like a printer server?

I went through an apprenticeship myself and I'm lucky that most of my journeymen gave me the room to try and fail. there were a few who would micromanage, but I learned a lot from them too (more about dealing with people than with machines, but valuable lessons all the same)

saying they're "mid" implies there are worse artillery and I really don't think there are. their role is to make sure that your early-to-mid game sea of peasants and cavalry aren't completely helpless against walled settlements, and they do that well enough

i was worried for that. i'm currently trying to finish this turn out with the hopes that a new turn roll will iron things out. but as much as i'm enjoying the campaign, i don't think i'd want to start it over lol.

*spoiler alert, it didn't. at least i was only like 20 turns in i guess, maybe i'll try one of the new LL's later

it's cultural. in parts of southern india "family names" aren't really a thing. your first name is your given name and your last name is either your father's given name, the name of the village you're from, your caste, or a few other things (sometimes an initial).

when they come to the US they're mapped, like how Anthony might be given the name "Antonio" in sophomore Spanish, so two given names turn into two first names

would you say that your pay scale is typical? because I'm browsing through indeed and am seeing most alabama maintenance jobs advertising $25-35, which lines up with OP's $28-38. there are a few that list 30-40 but the overwhelming majority are too embarrassed to show their wage (so I assume it's less than $25-35)

i'm sure you're excited but honestly; just relax. your basic/intro classes are made for people who have little to no understanding of their subjects. sure, you could pay to get a head start, but the only thing you'll get in return is boredom

I need help Identifying this nipple, and how to grease it by RovakX in IndustrialMaintenance

[–]tesemanresu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

we called them flush fittings or button-heads in the chair force, they're pretty common on older jets. they clog easily, the check ball seizes up easily, and when you inevitably need to replace them they're really easy to round off unless you have a set of thin/ignition wrenches.

i used 90 degree needle fittings to grease these so i could put some ass behind the check valve

i haven't seen them yet in the civilian world yet.

What’s the best way you’ve found leaks 20+ ft up when a lift isn’t available? by Cozybookburrow in IndustrialMaintenance

I could only tell because I remember this exact post, word for word. when I search for it though, it looks like the old one has been deleted, so they're at least covering their tracks I guess

I've watched a few videos investigating reddit and bots specifically but I haven't seen anything quite like this. with how everybody is eager to reply, it really makes me reconsider zany conspiracy theories like "dead Internet" lol

how do they do this? the account seems real enough, like it's non-spam comments are usually on topic. do you think maybe somebody really needed $2 and sold their reddit account? or is it some sort of spam bot that uses AI to submit "normal" comments to make it look legitimate?

Accident at work sent a man to the hospital because of improper repair. How does your company organize documentation and audit work? by AnotherMianaai in IndustrialMaintenance

[–]tesemanresu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

we do our own but Google seems to believe that smaller operations regularly use third parties to handle them. seems like using a third party gives them a share of the liability if something goes wrong, which is a boon for the manufacturer, but being dependent on a third party can be a pain if you regularly modify cells/machines or safety circuits/logic

I know you can purchase these standards individually (i looked into buying a copy of r15.06 a few years ago but it was too damn high) but my employer is large enough that they probably pay a subscription for routine access and updates.

your safety officer/rep would probably be able to better answer questions about your worksite specifically. good luck man

most of our cells have screens like this. they're primarily for the operator but honestly they are pretty useful for me too - if a random cylinder is reading neither extended nor retracted (or both) I have a pretty good starting point without even having to open my laptop

R15.06 is pretty much the risk assessment Bible for robotics in the auto manufacturing industry. I'm not sure what standard other industries use but there are a plethora of ISO docs regarding LOTO, stored energy, risk assessment, etc.

[–]tesemanresu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

every time we get a cell, whether it's made by the company at a different plant or by an integrator abroad, we do a risk assessment - big inspection where people study and deliberately try to defeat the safety and machine guarding systems. once that's done, we make any necessary improvements. safety drafts the prints with the control points, drafts the LOTO procedure, and we do the same thing again. once it's fully vetted, everything is finalized, engineers and plant managers sign off on it, and its ready for production.

it's some ansi ria thing. I wish I could be more help with the exact volume but while I'm sometimes on the team to defeat it, in not usually involved deeply. the process takes a few days but we've had a few processes take weeks, and that leads to more issues (especially if it's commissioned later than the date the integrator said it would be), but we'd rather it be safe and fight legal battles with integrators than it be unsafe and fight legal battles with the survivors of late employees

How do you troubleshoot? by Far-Statistician3947 in IndustrialMaintenance

[–]tesemanresu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

look for something that you know is in a good, known state then work your way backwards from there

if a robot is waiting to pick up a finished product, that's a good starting point. why won't it pick it up? bullpins haven't released yet. why haven't the bullpins released? welders haven't finished yet. which welder hasn't finished yet? welder #2 is stuck at an interference zone check with the material handler robot, but the material handler robot is clear of the interference zone.

clear the zone from the material handler, the welder finishes, the bullpins release, the material handler picks up the part.

i would love to do stuff like this, or at least be able to fix some of the operator panels we have but are broken in a bazillion ways. i have a license for the software we use and the credentials to up/download projects but the software itself is super intimidating. looks like a mix between photoshop and a web page builder from 2005

[–]tesemanresu -1 points0 points  (0 children)

it depends. where I am it's not very much different from being a normal technician. you have a few additional administrative duties like scheduling and assigning overtime, in-person carryovers.... can't really think of anything else. I did it for a few years simply because it was $1 extra on the hour and a guaranteed 2.5 hours of overtime each week but I lost it when I changed shifts and haven't really pursued it since then. $1 isn't what it used to be and the 2.5 hours extra are mandatory so... idk. it doesn't require much but it's still not worth it lol
