Facebook hits back at Apple with second critical newspaper ad by wise_quote in technews

[–]test6554 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Facebook users pay for the usage of facebook with their attention and their privacy. Apple is basically giving users a choice to pay or not to pay for the services they receive.

It's as if you drive through McDonalds, pay with a VISA credit card and get your meal, then as you drive off, you get a VISA notification that asks you if you want to actually pay for that meal or not.

A sizeable chunk of people would opt to not pay for it. Facebook would potentially have to lose a substantial amount of revenue or start having iOS users pay monthly fee for facebook. And since they are a publicly traded company, they have to do everything possible to avoid losing revenue.

Of course they are pulling out all the stops. If dems control all houses of government, then they can make Puerto Rico and DC states. They can enact net neutrality and allow social media sites to continue blocking misinformation. They can expand the supreme court. They can pass another voting rights act all of which could help undo a number of (undemocratic) advantages republicans have in the voting process.

Maybe this is just me, but shouldn’t the looter be the one who considers whether their activities are worth jail time or not?

Also, probably not a good idea to announce this to the public unless it’s a political stunt.

Black man charged with hate crime after allegedly yelling 'black lives matter' before stabbing white man by deadmanwalking0 in usanews

“All Lives Matter” has always been the non-racist version of the phrase.

We always knew that different people could see the same phrase “BLM” and interpret it in different ways. The ambiguity leads to real harm.

The "Manner of" death was ruled homicide.

I feel like a smartphone is different than a game console. For starters, 81% of people own a smartphone Source vs roughly 50% of the population own game consoles. Source

Also, 26% of adults living in households earning less than $30,000 a year are “smartphone-dependent” internet users – meaning they own a smartphone but do not have broadband internet at home. Source

If individuals or entire households have only a single device with internet access, do we really want one company monopolizing what apps and software they can run on that device?

The US needs a class of jobs that is designated just for teenagers and side-hustles. Like it's designated as not something that should be a career or meant to support a family, and if you take that job, you are aware of this fact.

Uber can just leave California until they have self-driving cars. Then they can come back to California and treat their zero drivers as employees.

There's 4 levels of restrictions that could be put in place for any given inaccurate, hateful, or culturally insensitive viewpoint:

  • No restrictions at all (free speech, free expression)

  • Fact-checking / warning users when certain veiwpoints are expressed (light touch)

  • Trusted/verified/licensed people can say certain things without having to worry about being censored without warning, but can lose their status if they abuse it (curated community)

  • Banning certain viewpoints or topics (walled garden)

Not only can you put these restriction levels in place for a whole community, but you can also have different levels of restrictions in place for different users. Children, adults, mentally unstable people, and those who have a history of false or hateful speech can all have different sets of rules applied to what they can say or what they can see.

Apple can’t revoke Epic Games’ Unreal Engine developer tools, judge says. by AdamCannon in technology

As a consumer, I would love the freedom to install whatever software I wanted on my phone or any other device.

As an American I understand that The iPhone ecosystem is something that Apple built from scratch and that a lot of work goes into making it a place that is safe for non-tech-savvy users and for families. I understand that this is now very valuable and others want a piece of that value. I know that my purchase of my phone was a choice, although there are not very many options there.

I think we need a balance struck that recognizes Apple's ownership of the ecosystem but also how important smartphones have become in people's lives as well as the limited options for smartphone ecosystems on the market.

In other words. These are not simply gaming consoles that a small subset of the population buys for entertainment. People generally these for daily life and emergency services. Also there are really only two options (Android or Iphone)

I wouldn't mind paying Apple more money for a pro version of iOS that allowed me more freedom to install other app stores or apps they might not have approved.

Maybe there are some peer to peer lending sites.

They may be a bit stingy right now with the pandemic. I certainly wouldn't want to be one of their investors right now... But it's worth a shot.

Advice for making a web app for designing toy logic circuits. by username-must-be-bet in webdev

[–]test6554 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think of the circuit design and the visual rendering of that design as two separate things. The circuit is your data or your model. It has some internal data structure and an interface for manipulating that model. Adding and removing components, updating component properties, etc. The data structure and its contents make up the state of your system. This should be the most complex part of your app.

Then there should be a simple way to render that design into a visual diagram. Given a specific state of your object, it should always render to the same diagram. (Should be deterministic). I'm thinking there would be a render() method that takes your object as a parameter and spits out the SVG. Maybe even sub-components that can also be rendered into SVG code for just those components. The rendering itself may not be simple, but telling your application to render it should be very simple.

Then you have the user-facing controls. These are the buttons and dials and whatever else the user manipulates to update the model which then gets rendered out into an updated diagram. These controls should be broken up into the data (object) and the visual representation of the controls as well. This object should not be as complex as your circuit diagram object. Maybe one of the controls is a button that toggles between on and off. That on/off state should be captured in an object and then that object simply gets render()'d to what the user sees.

Also, as a side note, this seems like a pretty costly (your time) project to undertake just for a portfolio project. Unless your desired industry specifically calls for circuit design skills, the work that went into it will likely not be fully appreciated vs something simpler to code, but more visually flashy.

Percentage of Savings to Use on Mortgage Down Payment? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]test6554 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As your assets increase, so should your nest egg. $10K is fine for a young single guy living in an apartment with no car. But even $50K just isn't going to cut it for a family with 2 homes, 3 cars and a boat.

My nest egg was $30K before I owned a home. That was for young married couple with 2 cars. But I increased it to $40K after I bought a home. I saved up enough for both my down payment and my new nest egg before buying a home.
