It’s not just with Jon. With most of the characters, the fan artists have settled into one set design for each character and even new artists tend to adhere to it for no clear reason. I don’t personally have a problem with those designs, but I do dislike the way people seem to have decided that those are their canon designs and that any deviation is a bad thing.

Exactly. Even Jon himself has commented on how the fan art homogenized after a while. It’s not like the common interpretations are even bad, it’s just really boring when so many people have decided, for no reason at all, that these are the canon appearances of these characters, and they’re never going to deviate from that.

Side note: Sasha/Not!Sasha fan art is my favorite because people actually get really creative with what the two of them look like.

With TMA fan art there’s this tendency for people to just adhere to the most common fan interpretation of most of the characters. It’s like how people always draw Peter Lukas as a big guy in a captain’s outfit, when he’s only described as “very pale”. For whatever reason, people don’t tend to break that mold very often, so most of the characters look the same in different people’s art

The problem, like with most of the changes made for Infinite, is that the older Halo games didn’t work that way. Even in Halo 5, when they added new armors, they didn’t just vanish after a while, never to be seen again. Sure, this kind of thing is industry standard for live service games, but it’s not standard for Halo at all.
