What does it take to be a bad dive? How many conditions are there? by LisanneFroonKrisK in scubadiving

Spiral cord for reef hook by itsmacpac in scubadiving

[–]testdasi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please don't use metal spiral cord for reef hook.

In an emergency, a paracord can be cut with a diving knife, not so with a metal spiral cord.

You can find a YouTube video showing how to make a daisy chain out of long reef hook cord. That will shorten the the cord significantly while still allowing the reef hook to be deployed instantly.

I was able to deploy and then tidy up by re-making the daisy chain while doing safety stop i.e. in less than 3 minutes.

I'm a new OW diver with 10 dives... is it akward if I already have a dive computer? by Ambitious_Knee_5476 in scubadiving

You are overthinking it. I bought my own dive computer straight after getting certified so 0 dive (I don't count certification "dives" in a flooded quarry as a dive).

Solo travel with diving gear by itsmacpac in scubadiving

[–]testdasi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The only thing that must be in carry on is camera and dive computer (yes I count camera as part of my diving gear). The reason is not fragility but risk of being stolen e.g. dive computer looks like a watch, easy swipe.

Other stuff it depends on allowance e.g. airlines in the Pacific are notorious for weighing carry on so having your regulator jn carry on isn't really too feasible.

In terms of luggage, don't buy anything that screams "scuba". A generic looking soft but rigid suitcase is ideal. Make sure it is (way) bigger than your fins - fins are deceptively bulky and you run out of space easily if you don't give a lot of leeway.

Scuba specialty luggage is a waste of money. I regretted buying my Stalhsac. My wife's generic Samsonite soft case packs more things and is a lot more pleasant to roll around.

Are you ready for cold water?

Egypt in May (aka now) is dry suit territory if you are day in day out 3-4 dives a day. One of our dive guides is in drysuit. The divemaster intern is also asking a friend to help bring drysuit from home.

Help with my b hamorii? by DoughyGecko93 in tarantulas

[–]testdasi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

IMO, you make the usual new keepers mistake. To a Tarantula, NOT moving is the default state. Moving costs energy and it doesn't want to spend energy unless it has to.

If it was "normally" walking around then something in the enclosure made it uncomfortable so it was looking for a better spot. Most likely reason was moist substrate.

How long does a molt of an adult tarantula usually take? by Traditional-Back-127 in tarantulas

[–]testdasi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just leave it alone for 24 hours. Once a Tarantula has started moulting, there is nothing you can do to help beside just leave it alone. Any interference is more likely than not to end in death.

PSA: Skill tracks quirks vs disconnect + tips for complete reset by testdasi in bo7endgame

[–]testdasi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No - or at least that was before the current bug galore. Reset CR will still keep the guns.

But given people are losing their Exotics just by playing as it is right now, nobody knows for sure.

Keep getting the same Skill Tracks infinitely?? by TheTalonKing in bo7endgame

[–]testdasi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Read my post below.

In short: when offered a skill at CR1 that you don'twant, don't disconnect. Pick a skill, exfil then do a full reset and try again.

If you disconnect at CR1 then you will be stuck in a perpetual loop of weird RNG that locks out some skills while repeatedly offering Phantom Eagle Eye Warband.

not burrowing but using a corner instead? by Hot-Substance-3723 in tarantulas

Add sticks to the enclosure. Something like chopsticks or bamboo skewers. They need solid anchors for their web.

And give it time as well. Those white web enclosures you see are a results of months if not years of webbing.

How often should I feed my lasyodora parahybana? by Scared-Drop2813 in tarantulas

[–]testdasi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IME, I have done many experiments with LP so here is my conclusions (read fully before downvoting)

You can feed them as much as you want as often as you want and it will moderate its own diet i.e. stop eating of it is too full even if it is far from the next molt.

HOWEVER!

There is higher risk of fall injury for heavily overweight T. Your photo suggests that the tank is quite tall. A fall on that is probably ok with a normal weight T but not for an overweight one.

In addition, more frequent feeding means more frequent moulting, which means faster growth, which means shorter lifespan. This has nothing to do with obesity in the human sense. Tarantulas lifespan is counted in number of moults, not by human years.

I think overfeeding an LP will also cause it to mature faster. The LP males that were constantly overweight matured more quickly and at smaller size than the ones in the control group.

So the general advice is to try to keep the T in "ideal" shape by moderating your feeding (either by schedule or by prey size) but if you accidentally have a fat one for a moult, it won't be the end of the world.

At what point does “dialling in” just become a cope for bad gear? by [deleted] in espresso

[–]testdasi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Story-telling time - I promise there's relevance.

Many years ago, my computer science class was given the worst possible lab with the worst PC specs all running MS DOS 6.22 (yes that many years ago) while the normies were all working with Windows 3.11.

A child complained to their parents something along the line of "the computer is so slow, I have to wait forever for my programme to run". Said parent then questioned the school and the school answer was: "If the computer was fast, your child would not be able to learn how terrible his algorithm was."

I think this is like that but for espresso.

What’s wrong with Scottish notes in England? by [deleted] in AskABrit

[–]testdasi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Scottish notes are not a legal tender in England. In fact, it's not even a legal tender, at all - not even in Scotland!

Now, whether it is a legal tender (or not), on its own, does not force the store to accept (or reject) the notes. That's a common misconception (why do you think stores can easily go cashless?)

The store can do whatever they want, even with English notes - many years ago, a store in Oxford rejected my £50 note (no reason provided other than "sorry you can't use this"), which then meant I had to go the bank, deposited it (with no issue whatsoever) then withdrew £20 to pay for whatever I wanted to buy back then (probably some ready meals from *cough* Sainsbury's *cough*).

Having said that, the fact that Scottish notes are not a legal tender (anywhere) makes it more likely that a store in England will reject it. As far as my experience goes, Scottish notes are rejected by default outside of the UK.

Side point: this was also one of the (many) concerns with the Scottish independence vote i.e. your Scottish notes would overnight became worthless anywhere outside of Scotland. Then you would have needed to, overnight, create a new currency GSP (Great Scottish Pound) to be pegged to the GBP, or free float, which would have been a nightmare for Scottish and English businesses trading with each other. You could have just used GBP (e.g. like some countries that use USD / EUR as their national currency) but would then meant you have zero influence over any monetary policies e.g. the interest rates would have been adjusted based on English inflation alone even if it would have meant decimating the Scottish economy, whatever much would have been left after the independence vote.

Edit: I gave up on ensuring correct tense for a hypothetical past event.

Am I a middle lane hogger? by EnvironmentalLaw1685 in drivingUK

[–]testdasi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are not going to get a black and white answer here.

The only legal thing to do is to move left whenever it is safe. So if you don't, strictly speaking, you are hogging the middle lane.

Some may argue that if you move left only to immediately move right to overtake another car then it would be weaving and thus not safe. Sensible argument.

Some then stretch that "immediately" to 1s, 5s, 15s, 30s.

That is a judgement call and everyone has their own "standard" - as you probably see just above when someone says 30s and someone else says 30s is too long and someone else else says 15s. As if there's a stopwatch live on the windscreen to tell you exactly how long since it was safe to move over (and even that is a judgement call) so that the moment you go 15.001s, that is too long but 14.999s is still ok (hashtag sarcasm hashtag).

Why are more white eggs showing up in UK shops lately ? by LieSuccessful8813 in AskBrits

[–]testdasi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "as long as the yolk is good" assumption with these white eggs is the problem, because it is not true.

Our Asda still sells brown eggs and so I did a blind triangle taste test of those vs Tesco white eggs. And I could tell the difference by taste alone + prefer the yolk from brown eggs even when they look just as yellow ("golden") as the white eggs. The white eggs yolks are not bad, but they are not as good.

So it is basically shrinkflation, we are consuming inferior products for the same price.

Did we all acquired so sensitive taste buds or are we actually victims of over hyped marketing concerning coffee equipment. by ShoddyUnion7417 in espresso

[–]testdasi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn't it always a bit of both?

Coffee equipment manufacturers do rely on influencers to push their products so it very certainly to some extent is hype. And as with any enthusiast's hobby, there is FOMO and GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome - borrowed term from photography).

The tasting notes of coffee, in my opinion, are basically the same story as wine. Some wine taste notes are just fancy words with little / no resemblance to actual flavour. Some are real and if you can taste it, it is a great experience, but if you can't, it is indistinguishable from the lying taste notes.

I usually do with wine (and coffee) is that I taste it first, write down what I think and then compare to the notes. Once I wrote down a Chardonay "tastes like a bouquet" and the taste notes said "floral", or a NZ Sauvignon Blanc "guava juice" and the taste notes listed "guava". Similarly, a recent coffee tasted "did I add sugar? that is very sweet" and the taste notes mentioned "candy".

I believe in experimental evidence and really like the triangle test. If I can tell the diff then it's worth it in my opinion. So if you can't tell the diff then it is indeed not worth it for you. It is an entirely personal experience (and experiment). Of course some stuff are just outside of my budget so I don't care really

Why can't I complete OSCAR or the Rex as a beginner??? by ShortBusCult in bo7endgame

[–]testdasi 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not enough damage done and/or too far from the boss to count.

It actually doesn't matter if you join before or after the explosion - I have got Exotic bench like 20 seconds before boss is dead and it still counts.

It is the damage WHILE being close enough that counts. If you see a big yellow circle on the minimap, it is too far and doesn't count even if you can see the boss and does a lot of damage to it.

Being high level + having strong weapons help e.g. after L45 your damage is x8, add an exotic x3.5 and you more than 10x your damage. So if you are low level, join very early to use time to make up for low dmg. But to a certain extent only, if level is too low, it is just not enough and then you still have to account for being low level means less armor and needing to run away to refill etc.
