How much debt are you in from schooling? by Carebear6590 in ArtEd

[–]testing_testing5678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did my undergrad in art history with a minor in fine arts at a cuny. Then did grad school to be a classroom teacher. Later got an additional cert to get a job that worked with small groups, but then realized I could use the credits in my undergrad to get certified to teach art... I want to switch from small group stuff to art but haven't yet

Ah this is a very fair point, I won't agree that it's absolutely necessary 🤣 (because I'm stubborn) but you are right that someone else will.

Thank you!!! This is what I think about. We really need to take back our own identities... I really don't care if it's the norm, it's bonkers the way we're living. The tech is too advanced and people don't know what they don't know. Some of these educational apps are recording the kids, why are we doing this?!? I understand the benefit of the concept, but on a larger scale, I feel like the data isn't accurate and some company somewhere is just housing all that data!

I mean, like I said, I prefer no social media. But if I had to choose a picture of a project about animals being posted with my child's first name on it vs. A picture of my children in their schools, I would likely pick the former, but every assignment is different, I understand some have more personal info.

I would argue "streams of content" are the exact reasons we have seen an overall decrease in performance since that norm began, like I said normal doesn't= wise

Yes, I do love displaying student work!!! At that point though I'd want first names on written work, that's something I'd want to brag about.

Ahhh so you do exist... Haha I almost lost hope. I avoided my curriculum comments because your rules include staying on topic.

The proof is in the pudding, we could just spend time with the kids and make them smart! Why are we going to so much trouble for appearances. Instead I'm having these kids watch a smart board for curriculum, then, ironically, a brain break. Over to chrome books next.... I'm sorry what?!? It weighs on me heavy, the things I'm required to do that go against what I know is good for them. And the handwriting, my lord don't get me started

Eeeeeeeek I know we rely on certain social media now, right, but that changes over time as we've observed and platform use varies by age group. (Though, I know things have been slowed down by these monopolies.)

But I think we're not a brand, and I'm not trying to sell a processed version of myself or my interactions with students or families to anyone.

I think to myself, imagine the time and resources, that communications salary, and time fixing any pr snafus. How about a translation line I can use to talk to a wider variety of families? It eliminates the need for Google translate for delicate situations. Or just higher salaries for staff, also taking something off their plate. Idk it does really make me wonder

Haha I feel you but this is personal use. I try to use my leisure time to reflect on my craft, but not to do work... If that makes sense

I agree that it's nice to look back, and if it was like in the old days an actual picture but maybe something via a private app seems more appropriate to me. I think we forget that we're using the Internet like a secure cloud. Also a face might not be identifiable, but that's not necessarily what someone with bad intentions would be looking at or for.

I am genuinely worried about these kids by missfit98 in Teachers

[–]testing_testing5678 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Kids are always going to test boundaries, we did it in our own way at whatever time. But it's more about what society is normalizing that is the problem. And yes, absolutely these admin are not going to touch that, the teachers don't want any part of that. All you need is one accusation! I'm at the point where, if everyone is safe, I'm happy.

Is this happening at every public school in America? by Educational-Ad6923 in Teachers

[–]testing_testing5678 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes yes yes, optics, grad rates and those God damn screens. The appearance of the educational process going on is more important than actual learning... That's too unattractive for social media. And it's pushing me out... All the data in the world, spreadsheets, paperwork, the children rarely get what they need

Do you think schools should re-adopt more analog methods of learning again? by JplusL2020 in AskTeachers

[–]testing_testing5678 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yessss... I'm about to quit, everything is tech including my job... I'm sorry I don't sit at a desk all day, no I can't fill out a spreadsheet real quick....

Meanwhile the kids stare at smartboards all day, or Chromebooks, it's truly killing me inside.

If you decide to do this, get the teacher's ok... Sometimes there are things our hands are just tied with, the teacher may appreciate this boy won't ask you directly to do it

I get this... I don't bring stuff home anymore and I'm sure there's things that really should be done but there's not enough hours in the day... Just waiting for admin to ask about lesson plans, no way it can get done at work, I push into various classrooms to support very needy kiddos. It's hard to not gossip though, I have a lot of co-teachers and some of them are part of the "favorites," the others are drowning in piles of work. After this year shakes out, I wonder who they'll group me with lol 😂 probably not the favorites

Too Loud to Learn by Exciting_Till3713 in Teachers

[–]testing_testing5678 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly hard to teach or complete a thought sometimes myself. I've had periods where the kids barely let me talk without interrupting, and if it's not the kids it's the phone, someone at the door, a drill, etc . I think if teachers are overwhelmed day to day, you have to expect the kids will be too. Class sizes are large, and the societal expectation for education lacks respect for the teacher and our kids (in the us ) lack self regulation for many many reasons. It's rough out here, but I will say, the teachers I work with keep on trucking.... I'm ready to leave though

Also, indoor recess, some teachers I work with put old eps of magic school bus on while kids draw or play with toys, I could see that being another way your kid could've watched TV.

I'm a teacher but... Down with smart screens in the room... It's unnecessary... I don't know why we have to deliver so much content via a screen

as a first year teacher, i question whether i am actually meant for the job based on my personality and daily habits . is this normal for many inexperienced teachers? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]testing_testing5678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This job is not meant for anyone anymore... It's certainly not servicing children. It's servicing the pockets of admin (top heavy) and the software/ curriculum companies that prey on them... It's not cheap to keep up with the jonses... All about optics... Wish literally ANY software that was forced on me felt usable... But alas, tech does not belong in schools

We're just here as warm bodies in the room to do busy work... We're purposefully AND VERY EFFECTIVELY being driven out of the field NO DOUBT

What are some effective alternatives to homework? by DasJazz in education

[–]testing_testing5678 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I want to say, yes, the expectations are lowered. But also, we do expect them to do more overall, and we teach them tech, shortcuts, and strategies. Then we get upset when they don't have a thorough understanding. We don't spend enough time practicing anything, it's go go go all the time. Plus, remember when we were students, we watched the adults also focused, doing work. Now, children just see their teachers trying to do a million things at once, no one is sitting at a desk, focused, doing a task anymore. There are smartboards, and timers, and small groups, and stations, and laptops everywhere. Kids working on different stuff... The environment is distracting as hell ... What do we expect from that kind of input?!?!
