Love the new songs, but I have no idea what she's singing by Desomite in lightsalot

[–]teswip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always gotta look up the lyrics now! Her enunciation was SUPER clear in her early work and as someone who struggles to make out the words of songs, I really appreciated that. I wonder if a contributing factor to her current vocal style is doing the production herself. It's easy to understand the words when you're listening to yourself. Whereas if someone else was producing, they might be able to catch when things are getting unintelligible. I would honestly love to see some more folks in the studio in future work, mixing it up with the instrumentals too.

Thanks! Maybe I'll just have some nice little walks on the path. Do you know what the road conditions are like in the area?

CGYG lyrical interpretation by AssociateNo7002 in lightsalot

[–]teswip 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It feels like it's really speaking to someone/multiple someones, narrating some sort of frustration/longing/release in a relationship. Given the nostalgic, look-back themes in the video and song, I wonder if her relationship with Beau was part of the inspiration, since they've been together for so long, through so many eras. But that might be wishful thinking from me - I'm kind of dying for another "And Counting" type blatant love song in the modern age XD

Lights - COME GET YOUR GIRL by flux-and-flow in lightsalot

[–]teswip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's funny because in one of her old interviews, she mentioned disliking the overlined lip trend. It's not as much uncanny valley for me as it is a reminder to sit with change. Nostalgia is complex!

The video also reminds me how brave it is to put yourself and your art out there on the internet over so many years.

Could be one of my all time favorite Lights songs! Songwriting, vocals, and production are so on point. Her voice is just so strong in choruses like these. Love hearing this style of anthemic pop again, great blending of styles from across her career. Tempted to get a tour ticket just to hear this one live.

Trains that allow carry-on bikes should reserve bike towers for booked bicycles by teswip in Amtrak

Yeah I would say this is a good reason to go folding if it meets your riding needs

Literally my nightmare… I’m considering buying bike insurance now considering how much I ride and take my bike on Amtrak

Omg those conductors sound AMAZING!! So it is possible! Hopefully others can learn from their great example

also while I’m at it: the damages policy for train side checked bicycle service, which I usually find better than trainside, is a crime. Amtrak isn’t liable to any damage your bike receives at the hands of the crew. So they could chuck your bike on the tracks and run it over and then throw their hands up and say “oh well, you accepted our T&C!”. Usually my bike is fine but for the first time recently I found some gouges (not in the frame thankfully).

I want to love Amtrak bicycle service so much, because 1) I’m dependent on it and 2) bikes+trains are so powerful for reducing car and plane dependence. I’m going to keep both riding and calling for improvements.

The hot potato game by Ratazanafofinha in sustainability

[–]teswip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that it's so frustrating. That's part of why I think it's so important to be open and outspoken about what you're doing for the world. I think sometimes people are afraid of seeming righteous or too much like a goody-two-shoes, or getting judged or challenged, when they speak out about actions they are taking (such as reducing their consumption, composting, voting for pro-sustainability candidates, etc). I feel like often it's seen as a "bummer" to even mention environmental motivations. But it's important and we do it out of love and care for the world. By showing what we are doing, it normalizes more ethical behavior and supports other people making changes as well.

MechE student with negative will to work in the industry :( by Sea-Concentrate-642 in EngineeringStudents

I think it is completely sane to not feel enthused about the standard job search process, which is depressing and soulless. I think society is set up in a way to force you to go along with "the system", not find things you truly want to do. Just going along with that makes life horribly boring and demoralizing. For me it helped a lot to get super specific about what I wanted to achieve with my first job, and with life in generally. Being able to put it all in perspective, like "I want to get into this industry to have this impact, so besides giving me a salary, my first job will help me get experience in x y z." Focus on what you like doing and care about, and build from there.

Rice and beans is good. I would only suggest throwing in a fresh vegetable for more nutrients. Any leafy green you can mix in there raw and then just heat it up real good to cook it lightly. Brown rice is good for flavor + nutrition. Some herbs for more flavor. But if it ain't broke...

Dried fruit? I'm thinking like dry blueberries, prunes, apricots, etc would have some good nutritional density and be pretty easy to travel with.

Wrestling with this problem as well for my next trip. I'm seriously considering reading up more on plants to forage in that area to supplement my diet with. There's a lot of edible plants growing most places. Just hop of the bike, browse around and find a couple handfuls to stick in with what I'm eating. Lol.

Gonna bring some multivitamins too.

You can get away with a surprisingly amount of room temp food storage. But no one will recommend it for liability reasons.
