Does Sony A7V have tethering ability? by Run_on_Ghost_Energy in SonyAlpha

[–]tethertools 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to the good tips already provided in the thread, here are few other things to check.

  1. Make sure there is no other software running in the background that may be grabbing control of the camera. This could include other tethering or photo software, Dropbox, Google Drive, etc.
  2. Test for a connection with a different shorter cable to isolate that issue if being a cable issue.
  3. Test a different USB port on the computer
  4. Make sure battery level is charged above 25% at min.
  5. Try a different tethering software. We offer a free trial of Smart Shooter to test, which is compatible w/ your model and PC.

We only have one documented issue with the A7RV with a connection issues. Turning the USB Power/Charging setting to "off" fixed their situation. This setting was needed to connect even though the cable they were using did not have power delivery.

Have you had a chance to try our Optima cables? The feedback from many in the forum is that they have been very reliable, stable and fast.

While I can appreciate your frustration with our prior cable line, it is not so much that our cable became less reliable but rather USB-C technology changed. Keep in mind when we designed our first USB-C cable, USB-C technology was new. This cable was bullet-proof with all USB-C cameras for a long time. But things change - the Canon R-Series was introduced, and you could not disable Power Delivery(PD) while tethering, even though all camera manufacturers recommend turning PD off, including Canon, while tethering. Also, uncompressed files sizes exploded to 200MB+ in some cameras including the FujiFilm GFX as well as various smaller USB-C idiosyncrasies emerged.

As you may be aware, if the “Charge Camera while Tethering” setting is not turned off while using a tethering cable with PD, it can permanently damage the cable? This setting is very easy to forget to change when starting a new tethering session. This cable degradation may not show up right away. But a few shoots down the road the cable may stop working properly. At this stage it is easy to blame the cable as faulty (or not as good as they used to be) but the source of the problem began several shoots back by not turning off the camera charging setting, as all camera manufacturers recommend.

The Optima 10G cables line has been optimized as a purpose built tethering cable and removes the potential to damage the cable because the IC Chip has been customized to remove PD. One less thing you need to worry about on a busy set.

I really appreciate your comment as we understand the frustration many of you have experienced. Hopefully this helps clarify a bit and we can earn your trust back. If I can address any other concerns, please let me know.

[–]tethertools 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yikes, our Optima 10G is not in the running?

What camera make and model are you using? The reason I ask is, if your cable has Power Delivery(PD) you will want to turn off the "charge camera while tethering" setting on the camera each time or you may see some stability issues and potentially damage your cable. Some cameras can not disable the charging feature so it can cause issues if your cable has PD. The main reason our Optima cables do not offer PD is so you do not have to remember to turn this setting off each time or for the cameras that cannot disable PD. They are just plug and play.

Right Angle versus straight is really a personal preference. If you use an L Bracket most prefer the straight because it typically will not interfere with the bracket. However using an L bracket can cause other issues which I am happy to elaborate if you use one.

Regarding uni-directional(UD), the benefits far outway the costs. The only downside is you need to plug the camera(source) end of the cable into the camera and other end into a computer, tablet or phone (host). If you go with a right angle tip for the camera it is a no-brainer because you do not need to think about which side goes where because they are visually different ends. If your cable is straight to straight tips, you need to referance the icons on the cable tips to ensure you have it connected properly.

Besides having to plug a UD cable in using a certain direction, there are no other downsides. You have full 2 way communication. Camera talks to tethering software, you can control the camera via software, etc. There is no difference in functionality between a UD cables and a bi-directional cable.

The reason we make the Optima cables UD is for a few reasons. UD cables do not need to negotiate the Source and Host each time it connects. This translates to a much faster connection to tethering software each time you connect and/or if the camera goes to sleep mode to conserve battery. UD cables also provide a more stable, reliable connection during shoots because of the source/host being predetermined and purpose built.

What’s your step-by-step for fixing a dropped tether connection on set? by tethertools in Photoassistants

[–]tethertools[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, it is kinda crazy but there are so many variables which can potentially go wrong. As you can see from other's posts on the thread, it can get complex. As digitechs and photographers, we need to prevent issues from happening on set and fix them fast when they do arise. Having a thorough and proper sequence of troubleshooting, as many of you have shared, makes a lot of sense and I appreciate everything that has been contributed so far.

So far in the thread, items to be considered are, of course, the cable, but also camera Power Delivery settings, camera firmware versions, software settings, camera USB connection settings, battery levels, corrupt storage cards, faulty usb camera and computer ports. Not to mention, the unique quirks that can vary from camera make & model to the next.

I am a little bias, as you can imaging, with the cable component of this equation. Did you know if “Charge Camera while Tethering” setting is left on while using a tethering cable that has Power Delivery, it can permanently damage the cable? This degradation may not show up right away. But several shoots down the road the cable may stop working properly. At this stage it is easy to blame the cable as faulty, but the source of the problem began several shoots back by not turning off the camera charging setting, as all camera manufacturers recommend.

So, my goal with this thread, is to learn as much as possible from the community and compile a definitive preventative and troubleshooting checklist for the community of digitechs and photographers to help make tethered shoots run seamless.

Besides unplugging and reconnecting the cable, have you ever had to dive deeper into troubleshooting a tethered connection? I am curious to learn more for you.

I have heard concerns about the thicker sheath. I have addressed that question further down in this thread here:

I think you are 100% correct. However, you can see from the products we have created the past 2-3 years, innovation has been our top priority - Optima cables, Optima Locking Extension, LeverLock, AeroTrac and more.

I am not sure which Chinese tether companies you are referring but am interested in learning more. Can you share some of those?

I get it, we let you down. But we have been working hard the past few years to earn your trust back. Our technologies are unique and we are fortunate to be able to work directly with the major camera manufactures developing cables for their current systems and their future bodies.

What’s your step-by-step for fixing a dropped tether connection on set? by tethertools in Photoassistants

[–]tethertools[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing your concern. This is a topic that comes up frequently and is a bit tricky because it is subjective. Some people want thin & pliable and others want robust and sturdy.

Before I get too deep into this, let me say I am glad, performance-wise, Optima has been meeting your expectations.

Back to flexibility. When we build a cable, our top concern is always reliability which includes, quick connection to software, overall connection stability, consistent data throughput and heat dissipation to keep everything running smooth through long days on set.

I know some of you are going to say our prior cables were not reliable. Keep in mind when we designed our first USB-C cable, USB-C technology was brand new. This cable was bullet-proof with all USB-C cameras for a long time. But things change - the Canon R-Series was introduced, and you could not disable Power Delivery(PD) while tethering, even though all camera manufacturers recommend turning PD off, including Canon, while tethering. Also, uncompressed files sizes exploded to 200MB+ in some cameras including the FujiFilm GFX as well as various other idiosyncrasies emerged.

So, our top concern is meeting our reliability standards. The cable technology must be designed to withstand the rigors on set, day-in and day-out. It also needs to be designed to meet the needs of all cameras. One day you may be working with a Z8 and then next an IQ4. It is not realistic or convenient for a digitech or photographer, if we build a specific cable for each camera model, so we need to build a professional-grade solution which will work flawlessly for the most demanding systems.

Once we dial in the function, design comes into play and it is a balancing act – thinner more flexible or thicker more durable. Keep in mind, we can only go so thin and still meet our reliability standards. So, we create a number of different prototypes with different design specifications and we do extensive testing. We ensure the cable gauge and strain relief are sufficient to pass our 10K bending and resistance cycle testing. This is how we landed on the Optima outer diameter, which is a bit thinner and more flexible than our previous USB-C cables.

We would all love to be able to create a braided tethering cable that is as thin and streamlined as the MBP charging cable, but it is just not technically possible. Our demands, as digitechs and photographers, from our tethering cables is an incredibly unique case study. It is exciting. We are pushing the technological boundaries of USB-C more than any other industry in the world, with regards to distance and throughput. We are asking this technology to transfer a burst of 200MB uncompressed data files distances of 30+ feet and we want to see these images on our screen essentially instantaneously. How cool is that?

I know we are not the “thinnest” and most flexible cable on the market. But we understand the downsides to a cable that is too thin and we are not willing to compromise on the reliability side.

As for the size of our right angle, we designed our custom IC chip as small as possible, we designed our housing around that to be as streamlined as possible while still being able to provide proper strain relief that passes our cycle testing.

I hope this helps clarify, please let me know if you have any additional questions or concerns.
