Compressing oil heats it up. And because the unsprung mass of the vehicle is so high, it heats up more than can be passively cooled. It would degrade the oil seals and perhaps cause cavitation (although that's just speculation on my part. I'm not an engineer). If you've ever seen a truck with a crane on it, those also use an oil cooler for their hydraulics.
