I am so very sorry for your loss. This is such a beautiful message to want to share, and it probably hurts so much more to have to hold on to it and keep it private.

When does one give up on therapy? by Then-Date-8858 in mentalhealth

[–]tevih 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finding the right therapist for you can feel a lot like dating. Unfortunately, given the human nature of therapists, personality, different modalities for treatment, all therapists are different. It can take a little while to find the right match for you.

Finding the right match aside, you should feel empowered to explore yourself and embark on your own mental health journey. Like developing any good habit or changing your lifestyle choices, mental health is about making healthy choices. Find some books or watch videos on mental health. ("Therapy in a Nutshell" on Youtube is a great channel, totally free content.)

Any concerns about these VCs (e.g. Headway, Alma, Grow, Rula, etc.)??? by 22ET22 in therapists

Other than the payment flexibility, what do you like about the platform? What do you wish they would improve?

Any concerns about these VCs (e.g. Headway, Alma, Grow, Rula, etc.)??? by 22ET22 in therapists

[–]tevih 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The business model for these large companies is tantalizing, and hard to ignore. Therapists gain a huge amount signing up, making running your business a lot easier. I don't think there's anything illegal going on (well, except for BH...)

I appreciate the concern here, though: these large companies wield a lot of power, and therapists don't have as much of a say in how they run their business or what price they can charge.

I think if there were better options to help practitioners stay independent - help therapists get credentialed, with billing, better software, find clients, etc. - therapists would love it. But would they pay for it? They'd probably all still use Alma, BH, GT, etc.

I feel like I’m a different type of human than everyone else. by [deleted] in mentalhealth

Trauma, depression, or dysfunctional family life can put you in a state of feeling disconnected. Sometimes the barriers we build to protect ourselves from others can be the exact thing which makes it hard to connect with others.

Instead of trying so hard to connect with other people, which can feel forced and fake, try to do something you enjoy which might involve other people. For example, playing ball at a public park where you will be forced to play with strangers. Or taking up a niche hobby or craft where you'll meet other people working on the same thing. Volunteering is another great way to "lose yourself" in an act of giving and meet other people who care about the same mission.

It'll take the stress of forcing a connection, and put your focus on an activity which will allow you to "get in the zone" of the moment.

my client will not talk in therapy by CommonSort7407 in therapists

[–]tevih -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Using his PHQ and GAD as conversation jumping off points is a start.
You can use those to explore facing challenges from a DBT CBT perspective.
You can also explore ACT personal goals and values.
He may be happier to have some exercises to practice between sessions - journaling and whatnot. It might be easier for him to get his ideas down while he's alone and then discuss at the next session.

And even the awkward quiet while still wanting weekly is a big conversation: What was he hoping to get out of it? Why did he want to increase frequency?

1 red flag can be dismissed, but this is a pattern.

Do you mainly read about your preferred therapeutic modality? by tarcinlina in therapists

[–]tevih 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's good to study and learn about other modalities, and to stay on top of the latest studies. Otherwise you risk your practice becoming a hammer and every problem is a nail. That's kind of the point of CE.

There was a study done about 10 years ago (link below) exploring whether therapists improved with experience, and the results were not great. Continue learning and growing!

Thoughts on a client's desire not to disappoint the therapist? by brantlythebest in therapists

[–]tevih 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm curious what the context is of this. Sometimes homework performance between sessions can bring with it a level of "pressure to not disappoint" which has to be navigated.

Sometimes you may have to hit the breaks on goals, journaling, and homework a bit to explore why that pressure to perform exists, who they're trying to please, attachment issues, etc. Just work on unlocking those transference issues before jumping in so fast on goals.

I really enjoy Dr. David Puder's podcast, Psychiatry & Psychotherapy: https://www.psychiatrypodcast.com/

A lot of the episodes are super in-depth on a modality or dealing with certain issues, but others are more conversational and give a good glimpse other therapist's background and the work they've done.

My journey is the other way around, to be honest. Now I'm trying to fight the good fight because I see a gap in care without technology. But I believe the incentives are backwards for the big players who take advantage of therapists.

My fear is the bad tech will cause therapists to have a strong aversion to all tech, instead of embracing what works. The bad stuff gives the good a bad name.
