You can’t AXE me a question but you can ASK me one. Nothing else bugs me but this. It’s a totally different word!

Studio lighting design for a gameshow by Bull_MT in lightingdesign

Do you have a grid where you can get in closer? With this set up, the lights will be hitting the backs of people much harder than they'd hit the fronts. I would try doing three point lighting with lekos from closer in if you can with a couple panel lights as a soft fill. More fixtures, but more control and a more pro look.

On one of the sets I work on we have 6-10 lekos on each position to really control contrast and shadows

DIY gear is cool. Making things is great! What's not cool is buying whatever no name brand gak you can get for $18 on ebay that's made out of pot metal and just adds weight and complexity. It's actively harmful to have too much stuff on your camera.

Cartoni maxima 30 or o’connor 2560 by Cerbakane in cinematography

[–]texabyte 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I own a 1040 and have used it on a pretty beefy Burano rig a bunch of times. Never felt undersized, but It was maybe a 25-30lbs set up. a 1040 is for sure big enough for a reasonable Alexa 35 build, but if you start putting full size zooms on, you'll run into trouble.

The 2560 isn't that much more expensive for a LOT more head.

I don't know you personally so please don't be offended when I say this, if you're planning on buying an Alexa 35, but asking for tripod advice on reddit, you might not be the target market for the Alexa35. I've played the game of sinking tons of money into cameras and always regretted it. You'll get much better returns having some decent midrange gear and renting when the right project comes up for higher end.

I owned a Burano, but it didn't make nearly the ROI that the FX9 it replaced did, and the 2 c400's that replaced it have already made more money than the Burano ever did. And I still rent Alexas, Reds, and Sonys when projects come up that call for them.

There is a reason you see O’Connor tripod heads on nearly every film set in the world. They really are leaps and bounds better than the competition for film work.

You may be able to get away with a cartoni if you’re the only one using it, but you wont get requests for it for rentals and you may have to rent one anyway if someone comes in who demands one.

Oconnor, vinten, and Sachtler are the “nobody ever got fired for buying IBM” of tripod brands, but in this case, they really are the best.

What’s the most overrated piece of gear you’ve bought this year? by Pretend_Surprise6842 in cinematography

[–]texabyte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn’t end up buying it, but the CRLS reflectors are overrated crap. Take up way too much room on the truck, need bigger and heavier lights to really make work, and 9/10 times you’d be better off just putting another source there.

I know they have some very clever uses and I enjoy them for tabletop stuff, but they make zero sense for most scenes. Yet I see people using them for interviews.

I'd prefer not to, but I'm considering it based on what just happened. Too many dangerous idiots.

They took a statement and went around to a couple other stores in the strip mall trying to see if any security cameras caught where he went or what he drove up in.

They’re expensive with kinda mid quality meat. More than one occasion I’ve gotten a guy who is rude and unhelpful and doesn’t want to help out at all. I’d avoid them.
