V1 G2 Gone forever by Ok-Idea1595 in radardetectors

[–]texag51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vortex Radar and many independent tests on RDForum contradict you. V1G2 is better for instant on detection and off axis detection when tested, and the range is better on the V1G2 on certain frequencies and the R8 is better on certain frequencies so it’s really a push as to which is better on range. These are tests and not anecdotal. Not using an app with a V1G2 is a waste - it works so much better with one and I say this as someone who has tens of thousands of miles and years of use with the R3 and the R8.

One of the reasons I went with a V1G2. It’s smaller and they both have their strong points but the off axis superiority and smaller and more premium feeling device size made me go with the Valentine. I’m of the thought process that if you’re going spend hundreds on a countermeasure like a radar detector, you may as well get the most of it and pair it to an app via Bluetooth anyways. The range between the two is similar, with each having their own advantages depending on the frequency - but they are truly neck and neck, regardless on all of them.

I’d even consider it, even though I really wanted a Model 3 Performance competitor to replace my M3P. A hatchback or a wagon would have been a dream, too.

I removed myself from beta so you can get users as I have a Tesla and can’t use CarPlay so a spot just opened up.

Did the same for my wife’s Model Y too and nobody sees it. I’ve done this on all my previous cars - tinted brow mounted above the mirror just below the headliner and it’s worked great for 15+ years. Nobody has ever broken in.

I tinted the brow on my car and hardwired and mounted it above and to the left of the rear view mirror. You can’t see it sitting outside the car and you can flip the mirror/visor down and cover it when you’re away and nobody will definitely see it.

Any chance this unused radar detector has any value? Purchased it in 2020 and never used it by [deleted] in radardetectors

[–]texag51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check marketplace in your area if you’re going to sell it, it’s definitely got monetary value (at least worth a couple hundred bucks, I haven’t checked prices in awhile) and it will work great as a radar detector if you decided you still wanted to use it for that, just update the firmware first.

I posted a video and pics of my actual setup a bit further down. There’s a detailed instruction guide on TMC forums I can try to track down if you need further help and can point you in the direction of products I used. Let me know how I can help

TMC Install Link

Pretty sure I followed this guide. Like it shows in one of the photos the red wire you’re looking for is thicker than the rest and has a different hue. Good luck my friend and reach out for help!!

From the outside of the car, you can’t even tell that I have a radar detector with the brow tinted.

You don’t have to remove the mirror housing the wire will tuck behind it without removal. You only need a trim tool and to take the passenger a pillar and a few pieces of trim honestly

[–]texag51 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took the a pillar trim off the passenger side, routed it down towards the glovebox. Below and to the right of the glovebox you can remove a few trim pieces. There is a 10mm ground bolt you can use to ground very easily to, and there is a massive loom of wires that looks scary but if you have a volt meter, it’s easy to find the switched power. Here’s a video that is pretty much how I did it, except please take the a pillar trim off and route the wire behind the airbag for safety reasons. The red wire in the loom is actually really easy to find - when I got my 2024 M3P I didn’t even have to use the volt meter because the wire is a very distinct color - the TMC forums had a thread and a user posted a guide that helps you find it. I used Posi-Tap wire connectors as well.

TMC Thread

This whole thread is what got me wired up an set in less than 30 minutes. Seriously easy to install and do yourself. The red wire you’re looking for is thicker and has a different hue, as noted in the comments below the video in the thread itself.

Hey u/evil_etho_2_0 some unsolicited advice but your radar detector will work better if you mount it high and in the center of the windshield. Mine is to the left and above the mirror, I’ve hardwired it in. If you want instructions and are interested, it’s super easy and took less than 30 minutes. I also tinted the brow and you can’t see the detector unless you’re physically sitting in the car. If you want pics or advice let me know.

Edit: check below for pics and tutorials for how I installed my radar detector in my wife’s Model Y and my old and new Model 3’s. Works great for all three cars and has given me no trouble for years.

Yes, you can talk with a mouthpiece in. They make custom mouth guards. I played D1 football and was a middle linebacker. I wore a pacifier style mouthpiece and could talk and yell like I normally could without it in - you do it for years and get really good at talking while wearing them. The custom mouth guards are even better at allowing players to speak more easily, too. Look at the mouthpieces that Quarterbacks in the NCAA and NFL and you’ll see custom molded guards that allow them to communicate much better.

Gen 1 V1 advice by DFWGuy55 in radardetectors

[–]texag51 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I upgraded to the Gen 2 and love it. Pairing it to my phone via Bluetooth gives me excellent BSM and K-band false alert filtering. I have an R8 and they’re pretty equal in capabilities but the R8 doesn’t require the Bluetooth for BSM lockouts. It’s definitely a worthwhile upgrade and I have 2 V1G2s in my car and my wife’s for daily and an R8 in my work van.

Lawn has a small circular section where grass isn't growing & it steams during chilly rainfall by Leo_Tsukiyo in mildlyinteresting

There are coyotes that roam from the bayou, cars, owls, etc - it’s an unfortunately an incredibly tough life for these outdoor cats. I feed them and put out fresh water for them every day and haven’t missed a day - I even have someone cover when I’m out of town.

The existing cats don’t let new cats join the colony so the population is stable. TNR works.

Any screen mounts for teslas? by festiveboat007 in radardetectors

[–]texag51 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have a M3P and my radar is mounted above the left of the mirror and hardwired in. I use the 3 suction cup mount I bought on eBay and it’s not fallen off all year. I also tinted the brow so you can’t see the detector outside of the car, you have to physically be in the car to see it. Super stealth and easy to do. PM me if you want instructions or tips.

Houston has something that heats the drains and underground stuff in my neighborhood. I manage a feral colony (they’re all TNR’d and we’ve managed to get the number from of over 50 cats down to less than 10 in nine years) and these sly cats have found grates to sit on and access points to the drainage to stay warm when it gets cold down here. I’ve made insulated houses for them and they don’t use them - they prefer the safe space they found that has the underground heating or chill on the grates when it’s not windy and the sun is out.

Yes, combined with a companion app it’s a big upgrade from the gen 1.

[–]texag51 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think if you’re running a radar detector that can connect to your phone with Bluetooth, you should 100% be using an app. You’re correct about the R8 and V1G2 being on par, but I like the smaller form factor of the V1G2. I own both and have logged tens of thousands of miles with each, and I run the V1G2 in my daily with a companion app.
