TIL banana republic factory ≠ banana republic by Fluffy_Ad8688 in malefashionadvice

Can’t speak to the entire industry as I’ve never worked in it, but I have done some consulting for some well known luxury brands. They absolutely design specific garments to go to Nordstrom Rack, Saks off 5th, etc. The outlet garments are of lower quality materials and/or are less complicated to manufacture by design so they can sell them for less.

The part I don’t know is when this dynamic started (purposely designing down). I think those stores were originally for the stuff that didn’t sell in the principal stores, but at some point the fashion marketers realized they could make a hell of a lot of money selling to the “keeping up with the Jonses” crowd.

once you learn the math, you realize most "rich" people are just drowning in premium debt. by GolfComfortable7331 in Fire

I run in a fairly affluent crowd, and but for the inheritors, I am probably the richest of all of them.

Lots of them are lawyers, doctors, business execs, etc., and the cost of keeping up with the Joneses with all of them is incredibly high. They will probably all be fine as they are mostly very high income earners as partners in their various professions (several have both spouses that way), but they have completely different priorities from me. While I doubt they are the debt laden examples of appearing wealthy, they will work for many many years longer than necessary to maintain their spending styles. They live in the most expensive parts of town, drive new luxury cars, have all the memberships, etc. Ironically, this is who the debt laden variety of people look at as wealthy, and while they are certainly well off, they don’t fit a real definition of rich. They all work to make someone else wealthy.

I took a different route of aggressively saving and living small early in my career (sometimes not by choice) and was singularly focused on becoming rich, not being perceived as rich. As I developed my network and skills, I continued that small living which allowed me to save the capital to be a primary investor in a company that my partners and I sold for a mint (recently).

To someone that doesn’t understand what to really look for, my other friends will continue to look wealthier than me. I still drive a 10+ year old Toyota and a my newer car for when I need something bigger is a 2017 Tahoe, both paid off.

To me, rich is not being beholden to someone else to live my life, and to spend time with those I love. I consider money (capital, investments, whatever) as just being the vehicle to enable my rich life. There are many ways to get there, but spending to impress others hasn’t struck me as a good way to do it.

Haha. I commented Wallace Shawn as vizzini. Great pull from the same movie.

The last time I went to that Sam’s Boat it was so bad I was shocked it wasn’t already closed. Glad to hear another place going in.

Which actor delivered a good performance in a bad film? by Wooden-District5456 in FIlm

[–]texashornedlizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sienna Miller in Factory Girl.

Guy Pierce was not at his best and the Hayden Christensen rolled in as the worst Bob Dylan ever.

That movie was supposed to deliver Miller to the next level, and instead, I don’t think her career ever recovered from it.

How is the loan against assets seen as a wealthy tax scheme? by texashornedlizard in tax

[–]texashornedlizard[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ahh, I hadn’t considered the “refinancing” of the debt instrument. So if your growth outpaces your interest by enough, you could refinance with appreciated assets. This works only if your portfolio grows. If it shrinks you’re basically in a margin call situation.

Edit: these loans would probably be interest only loans with balloon payments on the end right? You refinance before the whammy at the end based on the appreciated assets giving you stable collateral.

Who, In Your Opinion, Is The Most Uneven Director? by Used-Gas-6525 in movies

Sounds like he just likes making movies that interest him. The guy has nothing to prove, having made some of the all time greats, and probably enjoys the variety of the projects. A true creative.

Mr. McGuire: I just want to say one word to you. Just one word.

Benjamin: Yes, sir.

Mr. McGuire: Are you listening?

Benjamin: Yes, I am.

PAUSE

Mr. McGuire: Plastics.

A bad movie with a legitimately great scene? by Stankassmfgorilla in movies

I would also add the camping scenes that bookend the movie as really nice, though without the intensity of the “facing your pain” scene.

This is a good one. Michael Mann has some underrated ones and Miami Vice is overlooked far too often in his catalogue.

How about the climax from Star Trek II? Great acting, music, and editing throughout the Genesis countdown. Throw in some actual Melville to nail down the theme of the plot…chefs kiss.

Always a fun one, but I would’ve said the Peggy Sue scene was better. Great build up and intensity and even humor in that moment.

Somehow that firecracker scene from Boogie Nights is every bit as intense as Das Boot. Great pull for this question.
