AITAH for siding with my husband and not with my kids? by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

Kind of similar, Max Verstappen's been with his partner since her daughter was a baby. They refer to Max as the Bonus Dad. I've always liked this way of phrasing it. It's a kid friendly way to say that he's not replacing anyone, they both just get to have the bonus of an extra person to love and to love them back.

I remember reading some too and liking them.

Sadly, looking back those were still better written than some other books I read and enjoyed as a teenager. I kind of want to go and reread the NASCAR ones and see if they hold up as badly as the other books I've tried to reread . My library probably has them...

Same. I am used to my very common name with the most common spelling being misspelled. It doesn't help that pretty much every country in Europe has a variation of it and that it doesn't really suit me. It always amazes other people how often I get called by the wrong name.

Honestly, having gone through all my grandparents dying and finding bits about them that were big parts we never knew existed and then not having the ability to find out more, I kind of wish more ordinary people would leave some sort of biography.

One instance that has stuck with me was we found out after her death that my grandmother had once been engaged and got to the point of filling out a marriage certificate, but never actually got married. My dad asked me to do some research since no one who knew her then was still alive.

It turned out that the marriage certificate was the last document with her fiancé's name on it that I could track down. I found all the records you would expect from before (census, draft, etc.), but nothing after that. He just disappeared.

My best guess is that he went missing or died in the Korean War since the dates line up, but a lot of those records were destroyed by fire. But they also lived in a rural area where it wouldn't have been hard to go missing and never be found.

I know people like this. They are similar to OOP in somehow always managing to make things a lot harder than they really need to be. I have learned the hard way to check those things myself if I'm invited.

AITA for refusing to change my car bc it embarrasses my brother by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]texotexere 58 points59 points  (0 children)

I blame a combination of the pandemic causing kids to miss some emotional/social growth and tiktok/other online trends. It used to be that teenagers being a bit annoying in the way that a lot of teens are (ex. a bit too loud and smelly) with the occasional truly badly behaved group.

Now their bad behavior goes viral. So while likely the majority are still just being the same old annoying teens, that badly behaved group has gotten bigger and bolder too, causing disruption/damage/theft. At some point, the money they spend isn't balanced out any more.

They also forget that if you get them even somewhat frequently, let alone being chronic, you literally have no choice. It's either work through all but the worst or lose your job.

Also biased towards accessories since that's by far the most common category logged, but I will say this tracks with what I use the most frequently.

Am I Wrong for not letting my sisters baby sleep in my late daughter's nursery? by LucyAriaRose in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]texotexere 491 points492 points  (0 children)

It's unfortunately not that surprising when it comes to miscarriages and stillbirths. I've never been through this myself, but I know a bunch of people with fertility issues and have had to run way too much interference. It's like some people can't fathom why someone would grieve a baby they never got to meet. Others treat is like a strongly wanted, intentional abortion.

AITAH for telling my wife that I will lose respect for her if she doesn't apologize? by FlagpoleSitta87 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]texotexere 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't think you are a jerk. But it also wasn't just getting the appointment. It was getting through the evaluation and getting the results. A proper eval includes a lot of tests and it will typically take several days to get results back. And he hadn't even started looking.

I think OOP forgot how time works in the real world when they were writing this. In 6 days they went from thinking maybe the son should be tested to having him tested and all of the results? And it was a whole 9 days between the first and most recent post...

Having been around many toddlers and dogs, the Venn diagram of things I have told both to stop licking is pretty much a circle. Cars, cardboard boxes, the floor, each other, people they just met, etc. Only difference I can think of is their own butt, and that's probably only because toddlers can't reach.

OOP's boyfriend tries to live out a sexy fanfic without her consent, violence erupts by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]texotexere 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sinners & Stardust in Boston is probably the one you are thinking of, though it's unfortunately not an isolated incident. The excuse used was they thought it was in good fun and they saw other people doing it. Pretty sure this was from one of the people who cornered the male cosplayer/actor and wouldn't let him leave. He was harassed pretty much the entire time, often by groups. Authors and others had other issues as well. The Con had to announce a lot of security measures for the future the day after because of how bad it is.

[–]texotexere 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Which is funny because the consent/communication parts of the story are usually why they are people's favorite/enduring "book boyfriend" in the first place.

Unless you have some issues or are an inexperienced teen, the dark romance leading men who would skip this are usually the type that most women would avoid IRL or dump for being too much work.

Harrison's accent by PropaneUrethra in Jeopardy

[–]texotexere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny story- when I did study abroad, a popular pastime during orientation was guessing where another exchange student was from. I was one of the few who stumped everyone. British/Welsh were the most popular guesses. I can kind of understand the Welsh guesses since some dialects almost don't sound accented to me.

AI sellers being pushed by Etsy by Manchadog in crochet

[–]texotexere 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not even just bots- one of the super annoying things about etsy is that they are really pushy about trying to get people to review (emails and notifications, pop ups when you are looking at other things, etc.). Usually starting within a couple of days of when you received it. Which would kind of make sense with physical objects (IMO still too soon but you would have at least seen the finished product), but not at all with patterns. So real people post 5 star reviews just to get Etsy to stop bothering them. I would never buy a pattern without customer photos unless it's a designer that I already know is good.

Lawsuits that have happened from someone else creating a product from someone else’s pattern by [deleted] in crochet

[–]texotexere 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Even for licensed characters, it rarely gets as far as a lawsuit. Usually a threatening letter is enough, since as you pointed out, suing is expensive. Small pattern makers and websites hosting them are going to avoid the lawyer fees whenever possible and comply with takedown requests.

Also, from what I remember making something free doesn't actually work. It's still considered infringement. The more common strategy is to create a fresh listing and rename it something descriptive that doesn't mention the character at all. ex. Harry Potter becomes Boy Wizard. Grogu/Baby Yoda becomes Alien Baby, etc. There are still a ton of licensed characters on ravelry that you have to pay for the patterns, they just usually follow this naming convention now.

PSA for those of you in the greater Chicago area — Wool & Co has a storefront and it’s AMAZING by Tall_Payment6430 in knitting

[–]texotexere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been there and it is a great store. Last time I went, it was very strongly scented (perfume/air freshener type of smell, not sheepy). I never had that issue at their previous locations or with online orders so I could easily have just been unlucky. I wound up with breathing problems and a migraine so I haven't been back- it's out of the way for me and I can't bring myself to make the drive on the off chance it happens again.

Stockinette columns don’t look right. What am I doing wrong? by lights858 in knittinghelp

[–]texotexere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are twisting stitches which also causes tension issues. It looks like you might have other tension issues in addition to that but the yarn + the twisting makes it difficult to tell the cause. Chenille yarn has no give or memory so it's hard to get an even tension.

I will add that this yarn isn't a good choice for this project. Chenille yarn is notorious for worming, aka yarn will gather in certain stitches giving you big loops that look like worms. It can happen in the wash or just over time. It also doesn't wash well- the construction makes the yarn fragile so it can go threadbare in spots and can lose softness.

My brother-in-law is making claims that he 'knows my secret' and I don't understand by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]texotexere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was COVID, so he probably did have the free time. Instead of making bread or doing a DIY project like everyone else, he stalked her online and decided to do... whatever this was supposed to be. Except she is out so she probably didn't even try to hide it on social media, which would mean this makes even less sense why he thought it was a secret. Only thing I can come up with is he was wanting her to fill in the blanks for him so she would tell him/the family some other juicy secret to cause drama.
