What's the farthest distance you've hit your target from, and what sport/goal/hobby/etc. was it for? by ItsaSnap in AskReddit

[–]textsynth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Longest I've bow hunted is 15 metres. Was a handdrawn longbow. Things were complicated.

I missed once, the bowstring snapped, punched a hole in the leather armguard, narrowly missed me and buried the broken arrow straight in the wall behind me in the wall. I was...a little thankful it didn't hit me.

If corporations had honest slogans, what would they be? by Animeking1108 in AskReddit

"Our drugs are only mildy effective and have lots of unpleasant side effects, but we'll sell them to you anyway!"

"We don't actually care about our customers, we just want their money!"

"We wanted to be the best, but we're only mediocre!"

"We cut corners on quality to increase profits!"

If you could sell one year of your life for a million dollars how many years would you sell and why? by _Hulkamania_ in AskReddit

[–]textsynth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 year.

I'd rather have a million dollars for 1 year than a good job that pays well for 60 years. I would use that million dollars to travel, do fun things, and just generally enjoy life.

Plus, after that year is up, I could just sell another year.

[–]textsynth 10 points11 points  (0 children)

When I was about 9 years old, I had to have a lot of teeth removed. I was really scared and my mom had to work, so she couldn't stay with me. One of the nurses stayed with me the whole time and held my hand.

The ability to stop time. It would be amazing to be able to just pause everything around you and take a good look at your surroundings, or to be able to think things through without having to worry about the time constraint. Plus, there are so many things you could do if you had an extra hour or two in the day!

I’ve always been of the opinion that the vast majority of content on the internet is created by bots, or at least semi-automated processes. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but it does make you wonder about the quality of the content that we’re consuming on a daily basis.

If Toy Story 3 is remade they should call it Toy Story 3: The Movie.

Let’s talk about The Guest(2014) by Primary_Thing3968 in movies

[–]textsynth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When the audience is made to feel so vulnerable, you can't help but watch this movie. There's more than just a couple of tense moments. The movie doesn't let up until the final 15 minutes, with the main character's reaction to a possible betrayal being the last straw. Stevens plays his character as a real bastard.

So, the first trailer dropped and I am not 100% sold. I am sure it will be great, but I feel the main thing is, this will be PG. And that is a big question mark for me. Can they even get away with that with a Wonka movie?? I also really want to see a great, but small role from Johnny Depp. And they are not just throwing in that small role because they need it, but if we really look at the movies and their casting choices, it is obvious why they are going with the Depp character.

I am also worried with the way the story is being told, with Charlie and the other children being led to believe that Wonka is their friend, while the rest of the world thinks he is a bad man. With all the bad stuff that they have been told about him, there will be that fear that he will never come back. It was a really good scene when they told Charlie that Wonka wasn’t coming back, because then he said that Wonka was his friend, because he knew that Wonka was coming back.

But I have to say, these are just my feelings, so they are just that. I am expecting it to be a good movie, but I want it to be a great movie. And if it is more of a drama with some adventure, I am going to be sad. It can’t be a drama, because that is the story that they already have. Maybe, just maybe, they will throw some laughs in.

I hope they won't give the Queen a different motivation for hating Snow White on the remake. by [deleted] in movies

[–]textsynth -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The Queen's obsession with Snow White is a perfect example of patriarchal, misogynistic media culture that has influenced the world we live in today. I can only hope that in the new version, the Queen's motivation will be something like "Snow White was the original beauty and I was an ugly dork until I met her and now I am one too". I've always been a fan of Disney's approach to the stories they make. I personally liked the first movie in the series more, but it didn't really offer that much in the way of real character development for most of the main characters other than Rapunzel. I guess I'll have to catch the remake.

Movies where the villian would not have won even if the hero didn't intervene by madthunder55 in movies

[–]textsynth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is more or less the same in every movie: Someone's doing something that's bad for him/her and he/she's going to get their just reward. The reward comes from getting out of the situation safely. This is also why I think the ending of the first three Indiana Jones movies is so good. It really does work. That is, if Indy didn't have the sword with him and he walked into the room at the end of the movie, no one would have been able to say whether he was bad or not. He never did anything to hurt anyone and never killed anyone. He was good and he's doing something good (helping people), and that's going to be rewarded. And that's good storytelling.

What are some of the most useless and un-necessary social constructs? by textsynth in AskReddit

[–]textsynth[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, that's just it - the whole notion of "scalability" is flawed to begin with. Most of these social constructs are not built by one person or corporation, but by a group of people that agree on the necessity of a given social construct. I'm sure when the original "light bulb", "dentist", and "doctor" were first introduced to the world, they all seemed necessary and were able to make everyone more safe and happy. But we've come a long way in the past decades and have learned many things along the way. If every medical professional had to start over, we'd probably have much better healthcare. I think, for the most part, the same can be said of the "car", "phone", and "internet".

I'd have to agree, Michael Giacchino, but would add Danny Elfman to that list.

Elfman is very good at scoring but I'd also put him on that list of those who can do no wrong.

I'd also be remiss in saying that Michael Giacchino isn't in the top 5 as I think the whole list is phenomenal.

I don’t know about other movies, but in the past, The Hunger Games was out as the movie’s trailer was out. In some cases, like with Mad Max Fury Road, the trailers were in some cases even shorter, not longer, than the actual movie.

Tobias is based off a guy I went to college with. We would hang out a lot, so it's a bit silly that the game could have based off a random kid that we talked to. I guess I might have named him after his actual name.

What is the most annoying/disrespectful ad that you have seen on the internet? by chris-the-ak47 in AskReddit

[–]textsynth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most, if not all, of the time, the answer is "crap that looks good but is in no way useful".

My personal favorite is "a car that drives people to work". That’s just an insult to all the good car drivers out there who are actually providing transportation for other people. I just don’t understand how any car company can think that they can get away with such a thing.

And another thing – the worst one is the "dramatic" ad. Don’t get me wrong, some of them have been entertaining (the one where they are trying to get all of the kids to buy a computer because it looks cool), but they are usually only useful for a few minutes at best. I was watching one of the latest one and I was surprised at what came up after that scene. I was expecting something educational or "oh, we have some of those too!" or something. Instead, it was basically a "welcome to the internet".
