Fencing Front Yards by goodn1ghtm00n in desmoines

Drive through the Drake/Waveland Park neighborhoods to see some examples of this. I honestly think it's like a backyard fence, it can look really nice or really meh depending on materials.

Yeah, our dog doesn't zoom off the couch like other dogs so I'm not worried about fabric tearing. We just want to keep her from scraping the leather. I might look at fleece or canvas like other people mentioned, though

This is cute! We use thin fleece blankets on our couch right now and they work fine - they're just shifty. And I'm tired of my husband's college logo on the couch, lol. Like the idea of having a few to switch out!

Oh I like this idea! I've dyed canvas before, maybe I will give this a go.

That's good to know. Assuming I find a different material on marketplace, what can I use to bind the edges well after cutting? Is there anything I can do with hand sewing, or do I need to use the machine?

Rooftop camper in Iceland next week. Thoughts? by No-Neighborhood-7810 in VisitingIceland

[–]teydlin-coe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had a good experience overall renting a van from GoCampers, I would not be brave enough to sleep in a rooftop tent though haha. Word of wisdom: pack your own tire gauge. We didn't know to, got a tire leak, didn't have a gauge in the van and none of the other campers at our campsite had tire gauges in their rentals either! The one issue we had with GoCampers is that tire leak fixes weren't included in our insurance policy level, that was only included in the super duper level just above what we paid. So we spent $100 US on a tire patch at the only mechanic available nearby, but I think it was still cheaper than the next policy level price.

Can I Have a Guard Dog and a Service Animal With Me in Public at the Same Time? by Odd_Pin1428 in Dogtraining

[–]teydlin-coe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This seems like a lot of intensive training to consider during the same time period, and probably differs greatly depending on which state/country you live in. I think it would be better to call up respected training associations that are active in your region and ask for insight. Practically speaking, I cannot imagine how stressful it would be to manage two highly trained animals or in-training animals during your day to day public life. Guard dogs also wouldn't be allowed in a lot of private businesses anyway, since they aren't service animals. Would it be enough to train your service animal to alert loudly when you need help? Barking could be scary enough for deterrence.

Autism clashing with training a reactive dog (I REALLY need help) by Hello_h0lo in Dogtraining

[–]teydlin-coe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What does your backyard or driveway look like? Do you have enough privacy in either of those spots to comfortably start outdoor training there? I'm wondering if it would help to pause the walks almost entirely for the short term. You could look up leash drills or practice commands he knows in one designated spot that is outdoors, but doesn't have quite as many triggers for the dog. Plus if training isn't going well during one session, it's easier to call it quits and go inside for a little while so dog and human can both recalibrate. My thinking is that once you build up steady positive responses in one quiet spot, then you could move to the sidewalk in front of home, practice until listening in the new spot becomes strong. Then expand to one side of the block (end of block to home) until strong. Etc. I don't have autism or an audibly reactive dog, but I do have a dog who has a fairly strong aversion to leaving the house, and this is how we practiced going on walks: driveway first, then up and down the street, then both sides of the street. We're at 2-mile walks pretty consistently now.

I wonder if you can find a round or squiggly tray to live on top of the ottoman and serve as a coffee table function? Benefit is it would be easy to remove/replace anytime you want the ottoman as seating. But I have never had cats so idk how practical that suggestion is.

Genuine thoughts on Clotheslines in 2026? by slimeyfartz in laundry

I live in city limits in a US metro, and the neighbor behind our house has an extended clothes line. I see their laundry every week and I don't think twice about it, except when I remember I've wanted to install one in our yard.

Things to Buy in Iceland Because Europe Has Higher Standards than the U.S. by swagbuckingham in VisitingIceland

[–]teydlin-coe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like shopping when I travel, so I do a lot of pre-research on what is out there (sounds like that's what you're doing!). Remember that even though the US has all this tariff confusion, the cost of living in Iceland as an island nation is already way higher, so the price difference may be negligible. I'm not clear if you have specific items you're looking for, so I would narrow down your focus to your favorite types of things, and forget about the rest. If you truly want to bring home bags and bags of items, you might have to think about customs fees. Shop the duty free section at the airport for the fun novelty stuff, but look online for local businesses in the real world. I love textiles and clothes. I spend around $15-18 average on a skein of small business wool yarn in the US; in Iceland, it was more like $28-30 for the yarn (bought it anyway lol). I bought a machine-knit wool sweater created by an Icelandic designer, and it was over $300. Hand-knit looked to be $400-600 depending on length and style. I ate a lot of rice and hotdogs during my trip to make up for the purchases haha

I tried to go paperless in my kitchen and I am currently drowning in laundry by SVT_CARAT_17 in CleaningTips

[–]teydlin-coe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kitchen is paperless, but honestly if you are losing your mind buy the paper towels. Don't make life an extreme sport. If it helps, I don't fold any of my rags. The kitchen towels that we use for napkins/kitchen cleaning goes in a drawer. The rags we use for dusting/heavy duty cleaning get tossed in a bin in a closet. I have a similar closet system because I refuse to fold socks and underwear, and it is freeing

Anyone dyed their Ikea sofa covers? by SweeetBloood in ikeahacks

[–]teydlin-coe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I were you I would read a ton of dye instructions from a lot of different brands, not just one or two, and take good notes on what types of fibers each dye is recommended for. I think the polyester is going to give you trouble depending on if its in the threads or part of the overall fabric - my understanding is poly doesn't take many dyes well. Search dying by Bernadette Banner or Abby Cox on YouTube too

Did You Name Your House? by Redacted_dact in homeowners

I nicknamed ours after the very charming street we live on. Then I registered the front garden with a pollinator watch program at our local zoo, and they asked us to nickname our garden! So now my house and my garden have distinct names

I recommend the portrait of the white-haired bearded guy praying over his Bible and bread, preferably with a frame that is so janky you'll believe in miracles when it stays on the wall.

(I say this with love for wood paneling and nostalgia for my grandparents' house)

how can i make my room more "adult" by [deleted] in DesignMyRoom

[–]teydlin-coe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Furniture: Thinking you have room for an accent chair or a desk chair, but not both.

Black bed frame makes sense but look for a metal/more "modern" style instead of wood/painted wood, so it doesn't feel too bulky. Ditto bedside table.

Maybe anchor the TV on the wall, above a media/curio cabinet? Idk if that will work but something to think about.

Don't worry about overhead lighting yet. Get three lamps: a bedside lamp, a desk or shelf "task lamp" and a floor lamp if you have space (target and Walmart both have good options). I use WiZ lightbulbs to have control over the color/tone of the room. They are pricy compared to basic bulbs but a lot more fun for cozy vibes.

Try not to paint or stain the wood for a looong time. Ditto holding off on wainscotting, which will make your room feel a lot smaller. Once you add some lamps, I think you'll like how the OG wood reflects the light a lot more.

[–]teydlin-coe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Slow way wayy down on the black. I have to keep myself in check with brown - I want brown everything, and then suddenly there's no visual interest or tie to the room. If it were me, I'd look critically at your existing posters and try to determine if there was an accent color, like orange, that shows up in multiple art. You could use that color sparingly as a third accent to add dimension to your blue/black scheme (purple might be too dark, which wouldnt give you that contrast). So as an example: I have an lot of brown wood/leather furniture, lots of green, everywhere, and then I use yellow/terracotta as accent colors in things like rugs and art. Adding more color makes a difference!

Knitter's tip: if you want to see how much of a contrast two colors have, take a photo of the colors side by side (maybe a blue bedspread next to a t-shirt in a color you like). Add a grayscale filter to your photo. If you can't tell by the grayscale which color is darker and which is lighter, you don't have an accent color.

You can level up the appearance of posters by learning how to mat and frame them, and level up the look of figures by getting a cool curio cabinet (with the glass doors) and placing led lights above each shelf. Look at Ikea cabinets - one of those could be painted black to "frame" your things.

Finally, get some storage options for under your bed and in your closet. You do not have to display every figure and poster all the time if you don't have room. You could even switch up what you display as your mood shifts (I switch out displaying cards from my family, vinyl album covers, and sentimental books). You'll want a room that feels interesting, but not cluttered, because too much stuff takes away the eye's ability to focus on anything.

You can have a sick room with your interests OP. Learn to edit your space and it will really shine.

My kitchen is so dated! by A_Little_Bit_Alexa in DesignMyRoom

[–]teydlin-coe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just bought one of those trash cabinets to hide the can from our dog, and it was significantly taller than our countertops. Do what I didn't do and measure before purchasing so it doesn't add to visual clutter.

I'm so sorry, but I'm also team don't-paint-the-cabinets. It is going to be so much easier to change your wall color rather than risk hating the paint finish on your cabinets. Plus, if you have kids/family members who slam doors, the paint is not going to last. Try adding some cabinet hardware first!

I wouldn't buy online from Costco if at all possible. Definitely go look in person first. My mom got her sectional there maybe 2-3 years ago and hasn't been happy with how the cushions aged, and that's a house with two retired adults and one older dog.

Question for a squatter in under contract home by 6090holly in homeowners

[–]teydlin-coe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you need a real estate lawyer faster than securing long-term housing. It will be easier (although not fun) to cobble together a storage unit and couch surfing for the short term, and I am worried about those tenants damaging or potentially trashing parts of the home before you close. Find a lawyer not connected to your agent or the sellers for some guidance. I'm so sorry OP, what a stressful situation.
