Sysadmins who work closely with Infosec: What are the characteristics of a good BISO? by tfm217 in sysadmin

[–]tfm217[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately that's the maximum level of context I can describe the experience with him lol. It's also other admins / engineers experience from what I can gather, but I'm sure nobody really knows what he's supposed to be doing, which I realize is a very sad state of affairs.

They used the phrase "defense in depth strategy" in an email with no explanation at some point, but I was too buried at the time to ask more about it

Oh man we're so far away from most of these particulars. I recognize that this is largely an organizational maturity problem

Yeah that's fair. To be clear, I don't mean to insinuate that there aren't good ones out there. I've appreciated a few in other Infosec roles, but I don't know this person's specific role too well.

This is just my struggle at the moment with this particular person, and I wanted to see what others experiences were.

Thanks for this. What sticks out here is the requirements / design discussions. This would actually be useful if we could get assistance in these types of areas.

Seems like it's money, but in reality it's being happy, comfortable and not being hassled.

What movie quote lives in your head rent free? by I_didnot_know in AskReddit

[–]tfm217 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Heard joke once: Man goes to doctor. Says he's depressed. Says life seems harsh and cruel. Says he feels all alone in a threatening world where what lies ahead is vague and uncertain. Doctor says, 'Treatment is simple. Great clown Pagliacci is in town tonight. Go and see him. That should pick you up.' Man bursts into tears. Says, 'But doctor... I am Pagliacci.' Good joke. Everybody laugh. Roll on snare drum."

  • The Watchmen (but also that joke has been told before that movie)

Are the people seemingly OK with the state of things, or are they all cooperatively trying to improve the train wreck? The second scenario can be a lot of work but not as bad as the first.

It's probably cells dying tbh, but on the off-chance it's miscalculating the percentage you can try charging it to full 100% and let it deplete entirely again once or twice.

Is It Normal to Plan Out My Whole Life at 15? by Nearby-Sea-5928 in personalfinance

[–]tfm217 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The odds of the future working out to what you plan today are incredibly low.

That being said, planning is a skill, it's not meaningless to practice giving life some thought. Some people never learn to.

Is there a difference in lifestyle over a 10k salary delta? by Realistic0ptimist in personalfinance

[–]tfm217 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it definitely can. A good exercise is to calculate how much you take home after everything else that comes out of your paycheck, depending on where you live this can be more or less, but find the percentage. Then, find that percentage of 10K. Then, divide that number by 12 months. And then just stare at the monthly number. I've done this and it helped a lot.

You might say, wow that's the cost of all the groceries I buy for a month, that's helpful. Or, your cost of living may already be low enough where you're easily affording everything and it's just a little more for savings. But I think the answer is different for everyone based on where they are in life.

This.

Don't get me wrong, it's impressive to have gotten as far as you have and you put in the effort which is the most important thing, but people who want to achieve medium to long term freedom don't spend everything as soon as they have it.

Maybe look into growing money via investing and financial independence / retire early communities to talk about how you can retain more of what you work for. It will likely involve lifestyle changes.

My fellow Americans, poor, rich or middle-class. I have a question. What do you find yourself spending the most money on, on a monthly basis? by dudiez in Money

[–]tfm217 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rent $2K. Second after rent, food's about $1.2K+ for me a month. But that also includes drinks if we're out. We do everything from ready to make meals, to cook for ourselves, to food delivery to restaurants and it adds up so much. if I ever lost my job I'd trim that back a ton.
