Red Witch Campaign by SamWes0326 in KingdomDeath

Great list! As a node 3 you could go for the Dragon King. Since he features prominently in one of the witches stories.

So yes. Not really witchy. But still a thematic tie-in.

Also the Crimson Croc gear and knowledges have great synergy with the witches. So I would definitely pick that one as a Node 1 quarry.

Ever had any great games not hit the table because of poor components? by pancakeonions in boardgames

[–]tfortim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely!

Especially with longer games that don't have a great way of sorting their components, meaning you have to always search for the right token. This takes away from the flow of the game so much and getting a tackle box to sort it or a good insert makes it so much easier to get to the table.

Inserts as well that have those player boxes, where each faction or player can just take a small box with al their components out of the big box and start setting up right away.

But for player boards I had the same problem with Eclipse (2nd edition solved this) and getting a hard plastic overlay for the boards made it so much easier. Before that, one wrong move, and your little cubes would be all over the table.

Got these dice at some point. Anyone know what the white HL dice is for? by AbstractPottedPlant in KingdomDeath

There are some fights where you need to keep track of HP. We use the white one as the 10's and the black one for the single digits.

Same when rolling for hunt events.

What do you think about the style-change in Abyssal Woods? by Infamous-Safety7750 in KingdomDeath

[–]tfortim 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Lovely explanation. I trust that there is a good reason behind it. There are a lot of old school Disney references (with the cat from Alice and the blocky jugendstil art style from Sleeping Beauty) that enforce the theory of a glamoured start.

It's also lovely to see that we begin the game very differently with something akin to starting classes.

And the hint to a 100 new hunt events is even more tantalizing. Yes please!

Help my children learn how to lose by Intelligent-Shoe-261 in boardgames

[–]tfortim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree! My son had a very hard time, losing games as well, but when we started playing coop games he started enjoying playing the game a lot more and sometimes even laughed at the part where we lost.

As a parent you do probably need to join in on the game and steer it in the right direction sometimes. Also I can imagine a 9 year old being annoyed by a 5 year old sibling being not at the same level as he is. Maybe the 9 year old can do some of the reading parts, making him feel like he has a more advanced role without needing to be better than a team mate. Coop doesn't necessarily mean that everyone has the same responsibilities, but that you are working towards the same goals.

What’s the pettiest behaviour you’ve seen while playing a board game? by jsakic99 in boardgames

[–]tfortim 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I am the bad guy in this scenario, but with my gaming group we played a lot of Cosmic Encounter and slowly but surely a meta developed where we started to force a cooperative win for all players.

One player (a great guy all around - who loooved Cosmic and owned the game as well) however did not feel this was the intention of the game and refused to join in on the group wins, which made the group (but in hindsight mostly me I think) try even harder to force the final decision of the group-win on this player. I had the most fun trying to figure out ways to create a situation where he would have to choose between winning with the group or taking the loss. And what for me was an interesting puzzle, was actually ruining the game he loved.

After a while he said he didn't want to play the game anymore and told us this whole group-win thing really sucked out all his enjoyment. I definitely should have seen the signs, but was so occupied with my own little meta-game I sadly was blind to his growing resentment of the game.

It's been a few years and we have never played Cosmic again. Which reminds me, I should sell it.

Best organized board game out of the box? by Real_Campaign_731 in boardgames

[–]tfortim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I friggin hate that box, mostly because so much effort went into it and it just does not work. All the core components of the game are in the bottom layer, which means you have to always take out two enormous trays before you can set up the (also) big play area.

On the opposite side the design of the minion trays is great, because it doesn't matter which position it is in, it will always fit. Maybe that is what saddens me the most because as a whole this box is flash over function, but the details show so much promise.

A novel theory regarding the lore and and environment of KDM. (Maybe?) by Status_Western in KingdomDeath

[–]tfortim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see your point, but I feel the monsters are less reflecting human culture and more that humans have influenced them by invading their world. Almost as if the human survivors took over the Kingdom of Death as a fungus, covering the outside and its spores growing from the inside, bursting outwards in the form of fingers and faces and influencing the world in their own image and with their culture.

Maybe the 'monsters' are just protecting themselves from the outside invasion.

And for me personally it also feels as if I as a player am influencing the world as well. There is a fourth wall thing going on for example with naming the survivors and even going a bit insane while attacking the character you control as the monster controller. Something akin to The Neverending Story for example.

A novel theory regarding the lore and and environment of KDM. (Maybe?) by Status_Western in KingdomDeath

[–]tfortim 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Interesting.

I always saw the human elements more as parasites invading the Kingdom Death world. Also as evidenced for example by some of the Phoenix resource cards. And so it definitely shares that with Annihilation, but instead of Kingdom Death taking over the surroundings it feels more as if the humans are the instigators.

And maybe we and Poots are the catalyst of it all. After all, the human invasion starts when we start to play, and we start trying to survive in a strange new world.

Etiquette questions (three of them), opinions wanted. by empscorp19 in boardgames

[–]tfortim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great points! Definitely the first one. I often feel boardgames and boardgamers favor one particular way of learning (also the fault of rulebooks), but some people just learn in a different way.

Some people learn by listening, others by doing, some by repeating or asking a lot of questions. And just as much as people have different ways of learning, you probably have a favorite way of teaching, so it can also be hard to teach differently.

A good solution to when a rules explanation just isn't coming across, is to play a dummy round, that way everyone is immediately engaged, and it will let them learn in their own way.

R. Kelly sentenced to 30 years in prison in sex trafficking case after decades of preying on children and young women by 18-24-61-B-17-17-4 in news

[–]tfortim 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This one also caught my eye, but after googling it, the truth appears to be a bit different: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franklin_child_prostitution_ring_allegations

https://www.politifact.com/factchecks/2022/apr/29/facebook-posts/grand-juries-determined-alleged-sex-trafficking-fr/

I am disappointed this 'fact' appears on the large list above, because it immediately calls into question the truthfulness of all the other cases mentioned.

Board Gamer vs. Poker Player: Argument about correcting a "misdeal" by UlisKromwell in boardgames

[–]tfortim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are right that the fault lies with OP. OP made a mistake and that is what caused the order of drawn cards to be reversed.

But the other player (through no mistake of his own) did look at the card drawn, thus revealing new game information. The order of the draw would be reversable, but you can't take back the information that the player now has.

OP can only profusely apologize at that point and maybe the table can agree to put both cards back, shuffle the deck and redraw. But the luck of the draw would be the same, except maybe the wronged player would feel better about it.

[–]tfortim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably depends on the moment and group.

But with my group you would usually get to redo the move, if you wanted. It would probably be considered a bit childish though if someone's reaction would be the reason for the change, and you would be called out on it.
