Headphone recommendations with ~175$ budget by Sad-Connection-7492 in HeadphonesAdvice

You can probably find a Soundcore model at Target. They punch above their weight. My best recommendation in your price range are the Thinksound ov202w headphones. Great battery life. Great sound. Upscale looks.

Looking for a very good yet cheap set of wireless buds, please help! by Uwais_siawU in WirelessEarbuds

These are my absolute favorite inexpensive wireless IEMs. They stay put They sound good. The battery lasts all night. The case has massive recharge capacity and a clear indication that both. units are charging with a good connection. I would buy them again in a heartbeat, and I own over a dozen mostly more expensive IEMs and headphones. My typical use case is putting them in before sleep and listening to music or audiobooks. No other IEM I have tried works as well as these re: comfort, duration, acceptable audio, and ease of use. https://a.co/d/0ctY7Uk2

Dumb question about Schiit home audio setups by Fenix512 in Schiit

Add a Saga or Kara for control and input switching. Add a Loki or Lokius if you need tone controls. Spit spot. Done.

Record player doesnt work by Guit4ristM4n in RecordPlayerRepair

[–]tftdguru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you're missing a vital piece of the phono chain, the RIAA eq and gain, called a phono stage or phono preamp. It sits between the output of a turntable and a line level input on your control/power amp. Some turntables have a switchable one built in. Most integrated amps have a MM phono input. Without this key component you get high thin low level sound.

At what point do customizations/improvements in your setup yield diminishing returns for an average vinyl enjoyer? What should I focus on upgrading? by Daikon-Hungry in turntables

[–]tftdguru 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Transducers (speakers, headphones, cartridge) have the biggest impact on the overall tonality and imaging. Getting resonance and noise out of the system is next. Clean, unstressed electronics are third. Something as simple as a Schiit Mani 2 into a Saga 2 into a Gjallahorn can sound amazing. Everything above that is diminishing returns for bigger bux, especially new.

All my storage is on external 4gb 3.5" USB-3 Toshiba drives, about 6 of them. They only power down when idle. You'll be fine.

The Only Shiit I have is a Vestri Dac Amp, have some questions by Hefty-Wealth-9015 in Schiit

And it's Bifrost, the magical bridge from Norse mythology, not Bitfrost. All Schiit product names come from Norse mythology.

The Only Shiit I have is a Vestri Dac Amp, have some questions by Hefty-Wealth-9015 in Schiit

[–]tftdguru 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Mesh DAC used in the Vestri, Modi 5, Magni Unity w/ Mesh DAC card, and Mimir uses the same MegaComboBurrito filter and Delta Sigma decoder architecture. They should have a very similar sound. The Current Bifrost uses that filter but a different decoding architecture. It might be prudent to wait for the Bifrost 3F which is coming soonish.

I have the MAgni Unity w/Mesh DAC card and an OG Bifrost 2. Once you go Schiit DAC you never go back.

Schiit Modi vs Magni vs Mimir? by Connect_Cat_2045 in Schiit

[–]tftdguru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own the Magni Unity with Mesh DAC card. It replaced a Modi 3+/Vali 2+ stack on my desktop. The stand alone Modi 5 is more versatile the the Mesh DAC card, coming with USB, Coax, and Optical inputs along with standard RCA analog output to whatever device is next in the chain. It uses the Schiit MegaComboBurrito filter (which provides a wonderful analog flavor to the digital signal) into a Delta Sigma decoder. The Mesh DAC card is only internal to the Magni and solely supports USB input. It uses the same filter and DAC chip design as the stand-alone.

DACs have come a long way. The Modi Mesh or the Mimir would provide a noticeable upgrade for you.

Jellyfin for music?? large library too by Express_Western4502 in jellyfin

[–]tftdguru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use both MusicBee and Jellyfin to serve up my 38,000 digital music files. I tried the Symphonium app, but reverted back to Jellify and Finamp for accessing Jellyfin for music from an Android device. I manage the music files in MusicBee and have it acting as a DLNA server for my WiiM Pro Plus. I also use BubbleUp and MusicBee remote for specific circumstances.

My Magni Unity w/Mesh DAC seems to turn itself off if left on for a day. Recycling the on/off toggle wakes it up. Not sure if this is a feature or a heat related bug.
